Chandigarh Kulwinder Sangha Mohali, July 14 As many as 732 canal patwaris recruited by the Punjab Government were handed over appointment letters at a function held at Shivalik Public School here today.
Speaking at the function, Power and Irrigation Minister Rana Gurjeet Singh said Chief Minister Amarinder Singh was committed to safeguarding the water interests of the state.
History had shown that he never ignored the state’s interests, be it the struggle at Kandu Khera village or the passing of legislation in the Assembly to safeguard the state’s waters.
The Minister said according to Capt Amarinder Singh’s programme, the latter was to welcome the newly appointed persons to the government, but he was busy at a meeting regarding the SYL issue.
Suggesting a change in the nomenclature of the post of canal patwari to some more technical one, the Minister said most of the newly appointed persons were efficient enough to perform various challenging jobs in the department.
"We are facing challenges like the depleting water level and water pollution," he said.
The Minister said that out of the 732 newly recruited canal patwaris, 236 would be posted in the Sirhind Canal Circle, Ludhiana, 116 in the Ferozepur Canal Circle, Ferozepur, 214 in the IB Circle, Patiala, 41 in the Bhakhra Main Line Circle, Patiala, 83 in the Upper Bari Doab Canal Circle, Amritsar, and 42 in Bist Doab, Jalandhar.
