City Council approves water stipend

.
FAIRBANKS — The Fairbanks City Council approved $2,500 water-bill stipends for a certain group of residents affected by the perfluorinated compounds contamination, Monday night at City Hall.
The council had originally proposed a 2-year stipend of up to $2,500. If the property is sold, the stipend would stay with the affected property.
Although Councilwoman Valerie Therrien voted against the ordinance, she worked with the council on the amendments that were made.
Perfluorinated compounds are found in Aqueous Film Forming Foam, which was used from 1984 to 2004 in firefighter training exercises at the Regional Fire Training Center, 1740 30th Ave.
Once we started sampling in the pit and outside the pit, we didn’t just find petroleum contaminate.
The city is currently working to connect all 40 homes to the city’s water system. Fox said the contamination has cost the city about $3 million total since the contamination was first discovered.
It is the city property taxpayers that will be footing the bill for the contamination.
