KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah was critical of a documentary shown during the Supreme Court’s hearing of a case pertaining to water contamination.
“The documentary is made by the petitioner.
After viewing the documentary, Chief Justice Saqib Nisar remarked that human waste was being deliberately released in water.
Chief Minister Shah said he had informed the Supreme Court that 88 per cent of water is contaminated in Gujranwala, Gujrat and Sialkot.
“There is a report from Lahore which states that 100 per cent of water has arsenic.” Shah emphasised that the issue of contaminated water was not specific to Sindh, rather it was a nationwide problem.
Earlier Chief Minister Shah and former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal appeared before the Supreme Court.
Stressing that the government was responsible for providing clean water to residents, Chief justice Nisar observed that the chief minister had been summoned so they could resolve the issue together.
"If you say, we both can go drink and check the quality of water from any stream in Mithi," Chief Justice Nisar remarked.
Justice Nisar added: "I wish [PPP leader] Bilawal Bhutto Zardari knew of the [water] situation in Larkana".
Justice Faisal Arab also observed that people go to court after witnessing the failure of the government.
