Daredevil cyclists nabbed on JB highway JOHOR BARU • Johor’s teenage cyclists continue to dance with death, returning in droves to hog a city highway late at night after eight cyclists lost their lives when rammed by a car at the same spot last month.
Last Saturday, police detained 22 people – 14 cyclists and eight spectators – in Jalan Lingkaran Dalam, opposite the Mahmoodiah Muslim cemetery, and issued summonses against them.
Police also warned they would take action against the cyclists’ parents for not supervising their children.
5 killed in blast at China oil plant BEIJING • Five people were killed and three others injured after a blast at a speciality oil plant owned by Wanhua Oil Products in eastern China on Sunday, Xinhua reported yesterday.
An explosion at a storage facility was heard on Sunday in Anqing city in Anhui province, Xinhua said, and a fire was put out after three hours.
Early monitoring showed no serious air pollution from the incident and measures were being taken to deal with water pollution, it said.
HK activist guilty of rioting and arson HONG KONG • A Hong Kong activist was found guilty yesterday of rioting and arson during protests in Mong Kok in February last year.
Yeung Ka Lun, 32, was accused of setting fire to a taxi during the Chinese New Year clashes, which resulted in more than 80 arrests.
It was the fourth conviction, but the first for arson, connected to demonstrations following the police attempts to clear street hawkers, said the Hong Kong Free Press.
