Alpena Well-Users Grow Restless, Awaiting Water Contamination Test Results

Five wells at the Combat Readiness Training Center in Alpena were found with very high concentrations of PFAS Studies show those chemicals, once used to extinguish fires, can cause health problems.
Homes that have wells within a mile radius of the center are just now being tested, and people living in that area still want answers.
If my well is found to be contaminated what do I do?” Alpena resident Janice Martz has several unanswered questions.
“Do they come in and put a whole house filter?
Do I put in a whole house filter?” Martz, asked.
Martz lives within the mile- radius around where toxic chemicals were found, her well was tested less than a week ago.
The DEQ says it will take six to eight weeks to get results, until those are in, people like Janice are forced to improvise.
To be safe, she purchased multiple charcoal filters to clean her water for drinking and cooking.
Although it’s unclear if contaminants have reached the public, District Health Department #4 says it is likely.
“The governor’s letter really does initiate the allocation of resources to solving the problem and looking at the strategies in helping the communities,” Bryan, added.
