BOIL WATER ADVISORY: Flush & boil alert issued for 19 Pittsburgh neighborhoods, Millvale, and Reserve Township.
The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority has issued a flush and boil water advisory for 19 Pittsburgh neighborhoods as well as the Borough of Millvale and Reserve Township.
No contamination has been identified at this time.
Towns and neigbhorhoods affected: Borough of Millvale Reserve Township Allegheny Center Allegheny West Brighton Heights California-Kirkbride Central Northside Chateau East Allegheny Fineview Herr’s Island Manchester Marshall-Shadeland North Shore Northview Heights Perry North Perry South Spring Garden Spring Hill – City View Summer Hill Troy Hill According to PWSA, the following precautions should be taken: "Customers within the impacted area should do the following before using water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice: Residents who do not know if their property has lead water pipes or solder, it is recommended to first flush your lines by running water from your tap for at least one minute before boiling.
Boil tap water vigorously for at least one minute prior to using it for drinking or cooking (the minute starts when the water begins to bubble).
Wait for the water to cool before using it, or store it in the refrigerator in a clean container."
The following schools, which are part of Pittsburgh Public Schools, are impacted by the advisory: Pittsburgh Allegheny K-5 Pittsburgh Allegheny 6-8 Pittsburgh Clayton Pittsburgh Conroy Pittsburgh King PreK-8 Pittsburgh Manchester PreK-8 Pittsburgh Morrow PreK-8 Pittsburgh Oliver Citywide Academy Pittsburgh Perry High School Pittsburgh Schiller 6-8 Pittsburgh Spring Hill K-5 Pittsburgh Spring Garden Early Childhood Center City Connections – North Pittsburgh Public Schools released the following statement: "All schools in the impacted areas will receive daily deliveries of bottled water, based on student enrollment, during the flush and boil advisory.
Restroom sinks will remain uncovered to allow students to wash their hands, and signage has been placed notifying children not to drink or brush their teeth from the sink.
Officials also said a potential tear was detected in the cover at the reservoir, and due to the presence of birds on the cover officials are taking action to eliminate any risk that the water was impacted by bird droppings.
Officials are anticipating at least 24-48 hours before getting a nod from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) that additional water quality testing has been given.
