Crews working overtime to fix water main breaks throughout St. L – KMOV.com
ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) — Crews are working overtime to assist with fixing water main breaks in the St. Louis area The bitter cold temperatures are causing a large number of water main breaks.
Missouri American Water reported 40 water main breaks in St. Louis County and said some customers have gone days without water.
Some crews will be working throughout the night to fix the breaks.
In Maryland Heights, crews spent New Year’s Day repairing a water main break at McKelvey and Jonesdale Court.
Crews had to rip up the street to get to the broken pipe, leaving residents nearby without water to drink.
“It’s only been a few hours, since two o’clock last night, so they had bottled water and soda and things like that to drink,” said Carol Struve.
Missouri American Crews are working 16 hour days and extra workers will be called in on the holiday, yet the company says it’s still not enough workers.
Crews will be back to full staffing on Tuesday.

Officials: $12 million treatment plant will end Wellington water woes
As plans come together for a $12 million water treatment plant in Wellington, town administrator Ed Cannon is shooting for the gold standard of water quality.
Such tasting notes have long plagued the water supply in this town of more than 9,000 north of Fort Collins, where an algae bloom invades the main water source every summer.
Levels of geosmin — the organic taste and odor compound that causes the stink — were 10 times higher than they’d ever been, Cannon said.
In a Coloradoan post on the Facebook group Let’s Talk Wellington, the town’s virtual water cooler, some residents said the water smells and tastes like a swimming pool or “like chemicals.” Still, town leaders know the return of summer will threaten the return of the algae.
Other fixes include the $12 million treatment plant which is expected to be operational by April 2021.
The cost will be higher water rates.
The water treatment plant was half-staffed.
It will provide “odorless and tasteless water” to about 22,000 people, more than double the town’s current population.
“I think Wellington wants to grow beyond that.
When this was at its worst, the entire public works department showed up (at the treatment plant) and said, ‘What can we do to help?’ "No one called them.
SAA rejects social media claims that it overpays for water and fuel
“SAA has noted with concern false claims that the entity pays more for its supplies than the retail or market price on some of the commodities it procures.
The claims are baseless and misleading and we reject them,” said the airline.
The national carrier said it took note of comments on social media platforms suggesting that it procures commodities such as a bottled water and fuel at a premium.
“Nothing could be further from the truth and it would be foolhardy not to negotiate the best possible price, given the high volumes of supplies we procure.
“A company the size of SAA procures its supplies and products from a range of suppliers in substantial volumes and we must ensure that we conduct business in a manner compliant with our own supply chain policy, National Treasury regulations and other relevant legal prescripts.” Price competitiveness, said SAA, is one of the most important considerations in evaluating bids and forms part of its criteria in any tender process.
“It would be treasonous to procure these commodities at an exorbitant rate.
In this case, we source bottled water and jet fuel supplies from the bottling company and oil majors respectively, and not from any third parties.
SAA procures bottled water at a rate even less than the wholesale price of R2.75 suggested on social media platforms.” Fuel is an important commodity for SAA, as it accounts for approximately 25% of its operating costs.
“We have to get the best price in the market in order to remain in business.
We are comfortable that we are procuring this commodity within a competitive price range.
Gold Coast City Council rolls out 14 new drinking fountains in an attempt to curb plastic pollution
YOUNG Kayla, 8, and Ryan, 10, Prigg, know where to get some quality H2O on the Gold Coast.
The Upper Coomera kids found one of 14 new drink refill stations across the city yesterday which council hopes will prevent thousands of disposable drink bottles from trashing our beaches.
Costing up to $10,000 a pop, the first station has been installed at Justins Park at Burleigh Heads, which the Priggs took full advantage of.
The remaining fountains will be installed at popular parks from Burleigh north to Coomera by February this year.
Mayor Tom Tate, who unveiled the new fountain today, said he hoped it would help save both the environment and the hip pocket of residents.
“Australians spend way too much every year on bottled water,” Cr Tate said.
“Tap water is the best choice for your health, environment and your hip pocket.” Council said the program could be rolled out further across the city if it proved to be a success.
Cuomo: State Will Take Action On Contaminated Long Island Ground Water
BETHPAGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — On Thursday, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that New York state will clean up decades old ground water contamination that’s spreading under several Long Island communities.
He makes it with bottled water, and doesn’t dare use tap.
For years, the public water has been treated to remove toxins, but now Governor Cuomo said he is launching a complete fix, no longer waiting for the polluters to act.
Enough damage has been done,” he said.
It’s welcome news for a bipartisan group of Long Islanders who did not think the plume could be contained, and have gone to battle with the U.S. Navy to pay for the clean up.
“No community should be afraid to drink its water.
“So it can’t spread and there will be further wells inside the plume to remove all the hot spots,” Bethpage Water District Superintendent, Michael Boufis said,”That will do the trick.
The cost to contain the plume is $150-million.
The governor said the state will do the work now and recoup it from the polluters later, and through the courts if necessary.
The well system will extract and treat the water using carbon filtration, air stripping technology, and ultraviolet light as well as advanced oxidation.
The game of water: Pay extra to hotels or remain thirsty
A recent Supreme Court order has come as a major blow to consumers as it allows hotels to charge more than the actual MRP of bottled water No, beta, we can’t have more water today.
Little did they know that all these years of savings, which were meant to buy an extra two-night stay in the hotel, would be spent on buying mineral water bottles.
But the recent order of the Supreme Court came as a major blow to consumers when it allowed hotels to charge more than the actual MRP of the bottled water.
The apex court held that hotels and restaurants are not bound by the maximum retail price (MRP) when they sell bottled mineral water and packaged food items.
“Sale of packaged water over MRP by hotels and restaurants may have implications regarding tax evasion as a bottle purchased by a hotel at cost price, which should be sold at MRP or less, is being sold at much higher prices, leading to possible loss of additional revenue to the government in the form of service tax or excise duty etc.,” the government had said.
In its affidavit against Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), the government had said that: Charging more than the MRP for pre-packaged or pre-packed products in hotels and restaurants was an offence under the Legal Metrology Act; Selling bottled mineral water above MRP would attract monetary penalties and jail terms for the management personnel of hotels and restaurants; Overcharging for pre-packed or packaged products was an offence under the Legal Metrology Act that could attract a fine of 25,000 or a jail term; “Sale of packaged water over MRP by hotels and restaurants may have implications regarding tax evasion as a bottle purchased by a hotel at cost price, which should be sold at MRP or less, is being sold at much higher prices, leading to possible loss of additional revenue to the government in the form of service tax or excise duty,” it said.
Nobody goes to a hotel to buy or take away a bottle of mineral water,” the bench observed.
FHRAI’s response The Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) had filed a special leave petition against the Union of India and the decision came in their favour.

Bottled water: how do you know it is not tap water?
Holidaymakers in South Africa’s drought-stricken areas looking for a healthy, guilt-free alternative to the tap when it comes to slaking their thirst and staying hydrated should reach for the bottled water bottle this year.
This is the message from South African National Bottled Water Association CEO, Charlotte Metcalf, who pointed out that water — in all its forms — is a vital component of the human diet, especially during the heat of a South African summer.
And this year, particularly when travelling in or visiting drought-stricken areas, they should reach for bottled water instead of tap to help reduce the pressure on already severely stressed municipal water distribution systems.
“More than 90% of packaged waters in South Africa are either natural water or water defined by origin.
This means that 90% of the industry is water sourced from underground sustainable sources or springs,” she said.
“Since no water from any of these sources enters the municipal system, the fact that these sources are used for bottled water has no impact at all on the amount of water South Africa’s municipalities and Government departments have available to distribute.
“Further, given that less than 10% of all water bottled and sold in South Africa is defined as packaged water but that the entire bottled water industry accounts for only 8.9% of the entire non-alcoholic packaged beverage industry, just under 1% (0.89%) of non-alcoholic packaged beverages sold in South Africa is prepared water, or water which could come from a municipal system.
Metcalf added that water is the best packaged beverage option for the environment, as it has the lightest environmental footprint of all packaged beverages, particularly when you recycle as the bottle’s impact on the environment can be reduced immediately by 25% when you do so.
When you’re out and about and empty a plastic container (water, iced tea, colddrink, sunscreen etc), bring it home for recycling if there are no recycling options around you.

U.S. 35 in Eaton is now open following water main break
SPRINGFIELD — The Northwestern Local Schools superintendent was placed on administrative leave tonight following an investigation one parent called a “witch hunt.” The Board of Education voted 3-1 to place Superintendent Jesse Steiner on paid leave.
They said the investigation was finished, but would not reveal what they found.
“The board focused on Mr. Steiener’s alleged misconduct when interacting with others on the job and whether or not he was maintaining the high standards of professional conduct we expect from staff,” member Andy Gundolf said, speaking on behalf of the board.
Steiner makes more than $125,000 a year, according to his personnel file.
Many people attended the regular board meeting Thursday at the Northwestern Elementary School library, including Steiner’s wife and two daughters.
“If they made a decision, let our superintendent know so we as a community can move on,” David Bischoff said.
Jay Skrabacz told the board during the public comment part of the meeting that he felt they were being unfair and called the investigation a “witch hunt.” “When you look at Mr. Steiner, he has done amazing things for this district.
He reads to gradeschool kids on a weekly basis.
He’s here all the time," he said.
