Pet groomer gets bottled water for customers
Pet groomer gets bottled water for customers.
Bottled water has been flying off the shelves ever since the news of GenX being discharged in the Cape Fear River was made public.
GenX is an emerging contaminant that is still being studied for potential health impacts, but it is similar to other chemical compounds which have been linked to cancer.
Although GenX has yet to be regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency, Chemours voluntarily agreed to stop discharging it in response to public outcry after GenX was discovered in the water.
There are several questions about whether or not it is safe to drink water coming from the Cape Fear River.
There is not clear cut answer, but many people aren’t taking any chances.
In fact, some businesses are even getting bottled water for their customers and clients, including Von Barkee’s Dog Spa and Bakery.
The pet grooming company recently posted on its Facebook wall it would only serve bottled water to its customers.

How Our Fossil Fuel Addiction is Ruining Our Oceans
The vast majority of these bottles are not recycled and end up in landfills or in the ocean.
While many of these bottles are made out of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a highly recyclable material, efforts to recycle fail to keep up with the growing rate at which people use plastic bottles.
Moreover, major food corporations continue to manufacture demand for soda and bottled water, packaged mainly in plastic, which takes hundreds of years to decompose.
A report conducted by the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) found only about 30 percent of PET bottles in the U.S. (most bottled water bottles) were recycled in 2015.
Major drink brands like Coca-Cola produce the greatest number of plastic bottles, but the top six beverage companies package their products in bottles that use very little recycled PET.
This means plastic is not only polluting our environment, but it is also putting human health in danger.
Fracked Gas’s Role in Plastics The pollution caused by plastic doesn’t just come from the drink industry.
Most of the plastic created from ethane is used in packaging such as beverage bottles.
That means it’s not just major food and beverage corporations that profit from the destruction of the planet brought on by plastics pollution.
In order to preserve our oceans and our planet, major corporations need to stop exploiting our natural resources for profit, and that means putting an end to fracking and bottled water for good.
Harvest Gold residents receive help from community
Bottled water donations assist subdivision that has been without potable water for more than a year FARMINGTON — Since the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management issued a challenge to people to donate water to residents of the beleaguered Harvest Gold subdivision, local residents, businesses and nonprofits have answered the call to action.
A total of 15 pallets of water have been donated in the past two weeks, according to San Juan County Office of Emergency Manager Mike Mestas.
San Juan County is working on short-term remedies to provide people with potable water.
The Farmington third ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints collected bottled water through a water drive during a church picnic in a park Thursday in Farmington.
The ward donated more than one pallet of cases of bottled water to residents.
(Photo: Jon Austria/The Daily Times) "We have a great community, and the community cares," Mestas said.
The county is also trying to address the daily water outages in the Harvest Gold subdivision.
He said the county also is trying to get a water tank purchased for the subdivision using emergency funding.
Mestas said it will take time to get the pumps and tank to the neighborhood.

Magic in a Bottle: Orange County Launches Recycled Water Giveaway
Magic in a Bottle: Orange County Launches Recycled Water Giveaway.
Today, after an investment of some $600 million, the district’s Groundwater Replenishment System is the world’s largest producer of purified wastewater.
To find out, Water Deeply recently spoke with Denis Bilodeau, who has served on the Orange County Water District board of directors for 17 years and is its current president.
Water Deeply: Why is Orange County Water District bottling its recycled wastewater?
But we didn’t, because before we built our plant we went to the streets and educated the public about what we needed to do and why.
Distilled water has very low mineral content, whereas if you buy bottled drinking water, there are minerals added for taste.
And it’s cheaper than importing water from the Sacramento Bay-Delta and the Colorado River, because it’s so energy-intensive to move that water across the state.
It’s about one-third of our water now.
And we’ve invested now, I think, $600 million into our recycling program and that’s the public’s money.
And we want to undertake the final expansion of the project, which would bring it up to 130 million gallons per day.

Call to bring back water fountains in every town to cut down growing tide of plastic bottles
Call to bring back water fountains in every town to cut down growing tide of plastic bottles.
Environmental campaigners are urging towns and cities across the UK to install more water fountains in a bid to curb the growing use of plastic bottles.
Currently, almost 36 million plastic bottles are bought in the UK each day, but less than half of them are recycled and they can take hundreds of years to break down once they reach the sea.
It is hoped that by installing more drinking fountains, people will be encouraged to reuse their water bottles and create less waste.
It is now encouraging other local businesses to follow its lead.
Several bars and cafes in the city are also allowing people to fill up their water bottles for free and a local Refill app can direct thirsty visitors to participating businesses.
But a loophole in legislation means that businesses are within their rights to charge someone for use of a glass.
A recent YouGov survey revealed that seven out of 10 people (70 percent) believe tap water should be more freely available, so that people don’t feel pressured into buying bottled water.
The call to curb plastic bottle use comes as alarming figures published by The Guardian show that one million plastic bottles are sold around the world every minute, with the number expecting to rise by 20 per cent by 2021.
Experts said the increased demand is largely being driven by the popularity of bottled water in China and the Asia Pacific region.
‘Nobody is going to go without water’: Cayuga County creates emergency plans for algal toxins
Kathleen Cuddy, director of the Cayuga County Health Department, said municipalities are not required to provide their residents drinking water, but every one who buys water from the town of Owasco or city of Auburn plan to do so if needed.
If the order is issued, that information is shared with the state Department of Health’s Bureau of Water Supply Protection.
Despite these plans, Cuddy encouraged people, if they are able, to stow a supply of drinking water for any emergency.
Large facilities in the area that house many people also are working with the health department on emergency water plans.
The health department and the majority of municipalities who buy water from the city of Auburn and town of Owasco, shared their prospective water distribution sites and whether they would supply bottled water or utilize a bulk water hauler with The Citizen.

Monroe lifts boil water advisory after water deemed safe to drink
MONROE, Mich. – The boil water alert issued in part of Monroe has been lifted after tests revealed the water is safe to drink, officials said Saturday.
The boil water alert was issued after the water department found E. coli bacteria in the water supply along LaPlaisance Road, south of Hull Road to the south end of Bolles Harbor.
Officials performed follow-up tests and determined that the water is safe to drink.
What should I do during boil water alerts?
If you are in the affected area, bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water.
What happened?
Officials discovered E. coli bacteria in the water supply near the affected area.
The boil water alert was issued as a precaution while crews work on the problem.
More testing was conducted, and the system is being flushed.

Thousands Without Water In Eastpointe; Entire City Under Boil Water Advisory
Thousands Without Water In Eastpointe; Entire City Under Boil Water Advisory.
EASTPOINTE (WWJ) – Thousands of homes and businesses in Eastpointe are without water Saturday morning, and the entire city is under a boil water advisory, after several water mains broke overnight.
“We’re hoping, like I said I’ve got crews coming in from other cities to help and contractors, I’m hoping by late this afternoon (Saturday) we’ll have water up and flowing,” Pry told WWJ’s Sandra McNeill.
The entire city is under a boil water advisory as crews continue to repair the breaks.
“I’m not going to jeopardize anybody’s drinking water.
I need two positive tests of clean drinking water before I can release the boil alert.” Pry said crews are doing everything they can to fix the issues.
“It’s past a nightmare.
When I’ve got to get supervisors from other cities to help, it’s bad,” he said.
Residents in the affected area should bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before drinking or using for cooking; or use bottled water.
Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
Some gamers already live in the Matrix
Some gamers already live in the Matrix.
From this very interesting article: Even the most open-ended games tend to offer a sense of progress and direction, completion and commitment.
In other words, they make people happy—or at least happier, serving as a buffer between the player and despair.
Video games, you might say, offer a sort of universal basic income for the soul.
Instead, I played video games.
They weren’t as good as a job.
[snip] Did all those hours playing games make me feel fulfilled?
At other times, I have let go of my controller late at night, overcome by existential emptiness and the realization that I have, yet again, just spent the better part of a day engaged in an activity of no practical value to me or anyone else.
I enjoy games, but not without some reservation.
And if I had to choose between gaming and work, I know I’d pick the latter.
