Boil-water advisory issued in Hastings
Residents of Hastings were advised Saturday to boil their water after E. coli bacteria were found in the city’s public water system.
The bacteria is "isolated to one section of our system," the city said in an advisory, offering a detailed map of the contaminated area.
Many large properties, including Regina Hospital, Allina Clinic, the YMCA and Hastings Middle School are NOT affected, it said.
Those in the affected area are advised to "bring all water to a full, rolling boil, let it boil for one minute or longer, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water."
"Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth and food preparation until further notice," the city said.
"Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in water."
E. coli is found in water contaminated with human or animal waste.
It causes diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other symptoms.
The bacteria is especially dangerous for infants, young children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems.
The city said it is working with the Minnesota Department of Health to determine the cause of the contamination, and has begun adding chlorine to the affected system.

Drinking Water at More Than Half of Detroit Public Schools Has Unsafe Levels of Lead, Copper
The drinking water in more than half of Detroit public schools has unsafe levels of copper and lead, recent testing determined.
The Detroit Public Schools Community District said Wednesday that 57 of 106 schools in the system tested positive for copper and/or lead in drinking water.
Another 17 schools are awaiting results, the Associated Press reported.
The school district initiated the testing last year to "ensure the safety of the students," the Detroit News reported.
"This (testing) was not required by federal, state or city law," the school district said.
"As you know, drinking water in these schools was discontinued as we await water test results for all schools.
Although the kitchen water has only been turned off in schools where levels were determined high, we have been using bottled water to clean food in all schools," Detroit Superintendent Nikolai Vitti told the Detroit News.
(MORE: Michigan Official to Stand Trial for Deaths in Flint Water Crisis) The results at the Detroit schools come on the heels of a lead-tainted water crisis in Flint, Michigan, located some 70 miles to the northwest.
Numerous children became ill after the city failed to properly treat corrosive river water in 2014 and 2015, allowing lead in old pipes to contaminate the water in homes and businesses.

20,000 Pallets Of Bottled Water Left Untouched In Storm-Ravaged Puerto Rico
The emergency supplies were brought in by FEMA in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, which smashed the island and left its residents without power, without roofs and without running water.
Federal officials commandeered the area in the far east of the island last fall as a staging ground, collecting the water and containers full of tarps to patch damaged and destroyed roofs in surrounding neighborhoods.
And there the supplies sat.
Storm survivors were collecting spring water from the mountains for cooking and bathing, even with the threat of disease that brought.
Ottmar Chavez, now administrator of Puerto Rico’s General Services Administration, said FEMA reported that it had about 20,000 pallets of bottled water in excess in May this year, before Chavez was appointed.
His agency claimed the water, intending to deliver it where it was needed.
But after about 700 pallets had been distributed, complaints began to come in about the water’s foul smell and taste, Chavez said in a statement.
We are going to return those waters,” he said.
The mayor of Ceiba, Angel Cruz Ramos, told CNN he’s grateful for the generosity, but believes that too much water was delivered at the wrong time.
“The time and heat has made it bad,” he added.
Bottled water supply made available to areas in north Louth after power outage
Irish Water and Louth County Council have stated this afternoon that they are working with the ESB to restore power to the Workhouse Hill Pumping station that supplies water to Dunbin reservoir as soon as possible.
The power outage which occurred as a result of Storm Ali has stopped water from being pumped to the reservoir and it is impacting water supply to 3,000 customers in Dunbin, Courtbane, Shelagh, Rathmor, Kilkerley, Stonetrough, Knockbridge Rd, Little Ash and surrounding areas in County Louth.
The supply to Dunbin and surrounding areas is currently solely dependent on storage in the reservoirs.
"We can confirm that ESB is prioritizing restoring power to the water supply infrastructure", said Irish Water in a statement this afternoon.
Bottled Water Supply is available at the following locations from noon onwards: – Kilkerley Community Centre – Philipstown Pump House located close to Callans Bar & Restaurant "Irish Water is encouraging customers to conserve water so as not to deplete our reservoirs while power is being restored.
We are urging customers to conserve water by not running taps, taking showers instead of baths and to refrain from using dishwashers and washing machines."
It is expected that water supply will return to normal by 5pm this evening.

Money runs dry, water distributions canceled at West Court Street Church of God
FLINT (WJRT) (9/19/2018) – The weekly water distribution at West Court Street Church of God has been called off for this weekend — and possibly forever.
The church has been relying on private donations to fund the giveaways after Gov.
Rick Snyder ended state-funded bottled water distribution to Flint residents.
However, the church’s funding to buy bottled water has run dry.
If more funding comes in, church officials say the water distributions will resume.
But as of Wednesday, the giveaway on Sept. 22 and all future giveaways are on hold.
The church already had to cancel its Sept. 1 water distribution due to an issue with the supplier.
More than 400 families a week often rely on the free water.
Senior Pastor Rob Butler said the church spent about $900 to $1,000 a month buying the water.

Swiss consumption of bottled water rises significantly
Consumption of bottled water has risen dramatically in Switzerland, according to figures published in the newspaper Blick.
Before the 1970s, few in Switzerland drank water from anywhere other than kitchen taps or fountains.
By 1998, 680 million litres of bottled water a year were consumed.
In addition, Switzerland has some of the best drinking water in the world.
So why are sales of bottled water so high?
Around the world, rivers, lakes and oceans are becoming increasingly polluted by plastics, much of which is tiny micro plastic fragments invisible to the naked eye.
The level of micro plastics in the lake are approaching levels found in the mediterranean, according to Faure.
Unfortunately, 18% of PET bottles in Switzerland are not recycled1, and the environmental impact of making the bottle, bottling, transport and recycling is significant.
Nestlé estimates that recycling the bottle reduces the climate change impact by only 25%.
Getting a good reusable water bottle is one of the most important steps.
Water dispatched to drought-stricken stretch of southwestern Nova Scotia
— The Nova Scotia government is buying bottled water and dispatching tanker trucks to a southwestern stretch of the province grappling with an extended drought.
The Emergency Management Office said it has been working in Argyle, Barrington and Yarmouth to make sure people whose wells have run dry have access to drinking water.
The dry weather throughout the summer has caused many Nova Scotia wells to dry up, but the southwestern region has seen less rain than any other area.
There is rain in the forecast, but there was concern that it may not be enough to fill the region’s water table.
Municipal Affairs Minister Chuck Porter said Tuesday he has been speaking with the wardens in the area.
“We want to have a discussion about what the long-term looks like,” he said outside the legislature.
The province is also supplying non-potable water in two tanker trucks to local fire departments, which is then distributed to residents.
“The non-potable water is being provided by Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal in two tanker trucks and will be refilled as needed.” The region suffered through a similar drought in 2016.
