Safety warnings for bottling plant days after being caught illegally taking water
A water bottling plant in Christchurch has been ordered to tighten its health and safety measures just days after it was caught illegally taking water from a city aquifer.
WorkSafe inspectors discovered a number of failings when they visited Cloud Ocean Water’s site in Belfast on Monday.
A WorkSafe spokeswoman said: "As part of an assessment visit, Cloud Ocean Water was issued with two prohibition notices relating to machine guarding, five improvement notices relating to machinery, personal protective equipment and site traffic management.
We will be monitoring compliance of these notices."
A spokeswoman for the company said: "As we are in the process of commissioning the plant, Cloud Ocean Water is working with our health and safety consultants and authorities to resolve teething issues as soon as possible.
In 2016/17 it issued more than 2000 improvement notices and 1000 prohibition notices as part of its regulatory activities.
It is not the first time Cloud Ocean Water has been censured for health and safety failings at the plant, which is being built on the site of the old Kaputone wool scour.
Photographs revealed workers standing precariously on the raised forks of a forklift truck while they carried out dangerous jobs, one apparently welding.
Another was spotted straddling the forklift as he worked on a roller shutter beneath a scissor-lift, which could have crushed him if it failed.
The company also failed to provide data on how much water it has taken – another breach of its conditions – though a Cloud Ocean Water spokeswoman said only a "small" amount of water had been taken illegally.
Bottled water to continue for some Parchment area residents on private wells
PARCHMENT, MI — Bottled water is being discontinued for people connected to the Parchment public water system, but will continue for some residents on private wells.
Kalamaazoo County health leaders on Wednesday, Aug. 29 said that, because of PFAS contamination, residents on private wells within 1.5 miles of the former Parchement well field — and east of the Kalamazoo River — can still receive bottled water supplies.
Residents on private wells within the green-dashed line can receive free bottled waterCourtesy: Kalamazoo County Health Department Residents on the Parchment public water system, now safely connected to Kalamazoo City water, have water that is safe to drink and use for household purposes, health officials said.
"With the Parchment municipal water system back in operation, the top priority is protecting the remaining members of the public who depend on private wells for their drinking water from unacceptable levels of PFAS contamination," health leaders said.
The Health Department issued a map to show the 1.5-mile radius, using a green-dashed line as the boundary.
Residents on private wells within the purple-dotted line — the area of greatest concern for significant PFAS contamination to private wells — are being offered bottled water until "point-of-use" filters can be installed in their homes free-of-charge.
Residents who live between the purple and green lines can have bottled water delivered to their homes at no cost until a long-term solution is determined.
The distribution center for bottled water, at Haven Reformed Church, is open Thursday from 2-7 p.m. for residents on private wells within the 1.5-mile radius.
Those with questions can call the Parchment Water Hotline at 269-373-5346 on weekdays, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., until Friday, September 7.
Typhoid on the rise, check bottled water cans at home, office
Bengaluru: The city is witnessing an increase in cases of typhoid, which is a serious fever transmitted through contaminated food or water.
A lot of these cans might be unclean and unhygienic.
There are over 150 bottled water brands in the market today, and they are supposed to get water from a source that is treated and disinfected.
But there are many illegal manufacturing units which operate without licence and necessary standards, putting people’s health at risk.
The water is usually purified by the RO process.
Mr Srinidhi, a senior official and a state squad officer from Food Safety Department, said, “The BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) issues the ISI certificate to the vendor, after which FSSAI licence is issued by the Food Safety Department.
If the vendor is distributing more than 2,000 litres of water then the central licence is issued.
All the standards should be met by the vendor to distribute the water.
On typhoid cases, Prof (Dr) L. Sreenivasa Murthy, Consultant, Internal Medicine at Gleneagles Global Hospitals, Richmond Road, said, “The bacteria are deposited in water or food by a human carrier and they spread to other people.
Typhoid fever is contracted by drinking or eating contaminated food or water, which contain bacteria.
High metal levels cause water to be shut off at DPSCD schools
Drinking water will be turned off in all schools at Detroit Public Schools Community District after initial results for 16 schools showed higher than acceptable levels for copper and/or lead at one or more water sources.
Water at the 16 affected schools was shut off Tuesday.
An additional 18 DPSCD schools already had water shut off due to water quality concerns, Vitti said, bringing the total shut off to 34 schools.
Mayor Mike Duggan’s Office and the Detroit Health Department issued a joint statement Wednesday, saying: "We are fully supportive of the approach Dr. Vitti has taken to test all water sources within DPS schools and to provide bottled water until the district can implement a plan to ensure that all water is safe for use."
We also will be reaching out to our charter operators in the coming days to work with them on a possible similar testing strategy to the voluntary one Dr. Vitti has implemented."
The testing evaluated all water sources from sinks to drinking fountains, he said.
"This past week initial results were returned for 24 schools and higher than acceptable levels were identified for copper and/or lead in 16 schools at one or more water sources," he said.
A total of 34 schools already are on a bottled water plan with others to follow, according to district officials.
The district collected its own samples, and the results were reviewed by the Detroit Health Department.
In July 2017, district officials said testing in March showed the water was safe to drink across the district.
Detroit public schools to shut off all drinking water after tests show elevated lead, copper levels
DETROIT – Detroit public schools will start the year using bottled water in every school after tests revealed elevated lead and copper levels in the drinking water.
The Detroit Public Schools Community District conducted tests on all facets at schools.
The water coming from DWSD passed the standard, but fixtures and lines caused elevated levels at some of the schools.
Here’s what Detroit Public Schools Community District Superintendent Nikolai P. Vitti said in a letter: I initiated water testing of all of our school buildings during the spring to ensure the safety of our students and employees.
This past week initial results were returned for 24 schools and higher than acceptable levels were identified for copper and/or lead in 16 schools at one or more water sources.
I made the decision to shut off all drinking fountains and provide bottled water and water coolers to those schools at that time because of my concerns with water quality despite the intervention.
Although we have no evidence that there are elevated levels of copper or lead in our other schools (over 50) where we are awaiting test results, out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of our students and employees, I am turning off all drinking water in our schools until a deeper and broader analysis can be conducted to determine the long-term solutions for all schools.
I have communicated this decision to the Mayor’s Office and the Mayor and his team are supportive of the decision and intend to require all city charter schools to participate in the same level of water testing as we initiated last year.
That was nearly a year after testing found 19 out of 62 buildings in the district had elevated lead and copper levels in drinking water.

Stratford water back online
“As long as it holds up, we should be good to go,” Patty Silva, office manager at Stratford Public Utility District, said of the community’s primary well.
Officials first noticed sand in that main well on Aug. 10 and soon realized there was a mechanical problem, so they decided to turn that well off and activated the standby well.
The second well ran fine for one day, but stopped pumping water on the morning of Aug. 11.
Neither well was dry but both had mechanical failures, officials said.
This left the district’s 333 accounts, more than 1,000 people, without drinkable running water.
Well crews began working on the wells right away to try to figure out how to fix the problem as soon as possible.
After some repairs were made to the primary well, it came back online and the water was certified as good to drink on Wednesday, said Kings County Supervisor Joe Neves.
Neves said the only thing that is not status quo in regards to the primary well is the volume of water coming out.
He said the pump volume has been decreased in an effort to reduce the amount of sand that was flowing in the well and allow for a longer use.
After both wells failed, water was trucked in from fire trucks and local dairies before the state approved the use of a third well that was previously abandoned.

Marion business collects water to help those in Flint, Michigan
She was among a group of people loading cases of water that had accumulated in the bar over the week into a U-Haul headed for Flint, Michigan.
They are collecting water for residents still affected by the four-year-old crisis.
‘A crisis in confidence’ as well The water crisis in Flint began in 2014 when the city’s water supply became contaminated with lead after its water source was switched from Lake Huron and the Detroit River to the Flint River.
Michigan officials say the water system hasn’t had levels of lead exceeding the federal limit for nearly two years.
"But what we are dealing with is a crisis in confidence and trust that the water we are drinking is safe."
‘Directly into the hands of the people that need it’ As employees of Gotham and other Marion residents picked up cases of water on Monday, Wilson discussed where the water would go.
She said the water would be dropped off at places like the Greater Holy Temple and the Asbury United Methodist Church, both in Flint.
Thousands that still need water Gaskin said that not all of the houses have clean drinking water at this point.
A number of residents in the city still rely on donations of bottled water and filters.
"We still have thousands of people that don’t have confidence in that system," Gaskin said.
