Mamata condemns Sirsa, Verma’s ‘pitiful’ approach to Kejriwal.
Soon after West Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Parvesh Verma and BJP- SAD MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa accosted Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal for an appointment to discuss water scarcity issue in the national capital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while condemning their ‘unfortunate’ behaviour said such an approach is not good for democracy.
Speaking to media here post her party’s stupendous lead in the recent civic polls, Banerjee asserted that this kind of behaviour will not be accepted, adding that any internal matter between the two state governments should be resolved through official dialogue.
she asked.
Mamata further stated that the AAP convener has clarified the matter and water will be available, starting tomorrow.
"I have also had water problems in the state.
Carrying the allegations forward, Parvesh Verma questioned Kejriwal saying he is accountable to the people of Delhi and cannot run away for long.
"His interest lies in unwanted politics.
He has time to meet the West Bengal Chief Minister, but not his own cabinet MLAs and representatives," he said.

Assam: Smart City? "First give us a decent Guwahati with basic amenities"

Guwahati May 17: Water scarcity is reeling excessively in guwahati,as residents are facing a severe problem with water crisis.Agencies responsible for providing piped water supply to the people are much to be blamed for this problem.
The urban water supply here provides water just once a day.
It hardly suffices even half our daily requirement,” says Pranati Das, a resident of Hengerabari Road where piped water is supplied by the Assam Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board.
“In our locality we used to get water supply at full force for up to four hours every day in the afternoon.
According to GMC sources, water supply in some areas of the city has been affected due to the old and obsolete machinery of the Satpukhuri water plant.
“Moreover, the residents getting water supply through the Nabagraha line are also getting irregular water supply.
Of the 69 functional piped water supply schemes (PWSS), only 34 were supplying sufficient water.

#AUW2017: Innovative water management in Africa requires collaboration

#AUW2017: Innovative water management in Africa requires collaboration.
Uganda’s Minister of Water and Environment Sam Cheptoris kicked off proceedings in the Water track on the first day of this year’s African Utility Week.
The first session’s focus was on water scarcity in Africa.
He described some of the water-related challenges experienced in Uganda and how various spatial and temporal variables render certain areas of the country water-stressed over long periods of time.
"The country has experienced increasing episodes of dry and hot spells over the last decades and the spread of areas affected have been increasing, where some areas have experienced water shortages, and we have had to deal with them through water rationing," he said.
Water-energy-food nexus Paul Yilla, a research scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria, and chair of the session, delved into the water-energy-food nexus and how silo-based management in the water sector needs to be broken down and discouraged.
“When you talk about the nexus, it goes beyond just water, energy and food and could include aspects of population growth, environmental pressures and geopolitical conflicts and how these affect the trade of these resources and the security of these resources within borders,” he said.
Transboundary management of water resources Effective management of shared water resources is important for water-stressed regions in Africa.
Yilla used the example of the Ruzizi River where cooperation between Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi has seen the development and management of hydroelectric dams, all three of which share in the socioeconomic benefits.

A country without water

A country without water.
Pakistan is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world.
The situation here is going towards the worst in water scarcity, which needs to be addressed through policy mechanism with participation of all shareholders.
Recently, Sindh Agriculture University held a seminar to discuss water issues in the country.
The speakers emphasised the importance of water governance and said that the country is dependent on the River Indus, which is the backbone of the entire agriculture.
The river not only feeds the irrigation canals and sources, but contributes to maintain wider ecosystems, wetlands and overall environment.
The dependence on a single river system means that the country has little of the strength to manage its water resources as compare to other countries that have more than one river basins and diversity of water resources.
In view of the above, there is a need for a collective approach to engage policymakers to come up with a rational and responsible use of water.

Madhava Manthri dam structure across Cauvery to be rebuilt for potable water

Madhava Manthri dam structure across Cauvery to be rebuilt for potable water.
MYSURU,May16: Consecutive droughts and fall in reservoir levels in Cauvery basin have hit both irrigation and drinking water needs of Bengaluru and other towns.
This has forced authorities to rebuild the 900-year-old Madhava Manthri dam into a concrete structure across the river.
The dam with about one tmcft of water storage will address drinking water scarcity to an extent.
Madhava Manthri is the main source of water for 56 villages in Malavalli taluk, Purigali lift irrigation that irrigates 30,000 acres in Malavalli, a source for Muduguthore lift irrigation covering parts of T Narsipur and Belagawadi and also for hydel power project in Hemmige.
The state government has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) and invited tenders to construct the dam at a cost of Rs 70 crore as any delay will badly hit these projects and put public to hardships during drought.
Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department has completed modernisation of Madhava Manthri left bank irrigation canal that would check seepage and ensure that the farmers in tail-end also get water.
As the Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir is completely dried up, the officials utilised the situation and have reset the sluice gates at all the three levels in order to avoid wastage of water.
They have also completed modernisation of Ullahalli and Rampura canals in Kabini achukat.
Cauvery Niravari Nigam managing director Shivashankar said the water storage in these dams would be a great relief to meet drinking water needs of Bengaluru and other towns.

Eat healthy and stay cool this summer, say doctors

Eat healthy and stay cool this summer, say doctors.
But with the increasing water scarcity, illnesses such as Hepatitis A, typhoid and diarrhoeal disease too could start spreading, they say.
“Contaminated water could lead to diarrhoeal disease, Hepatitis A, dysentery and viral gastroenteritis,” said S. Subramanian, infectious diseases consultant, Gleneagles Global Hospitals.
“As the city is reeling under severe heat, residents must be careful, especially the young and the elderly.
“Check your water filters and make sure they are working properly, and cleaned periodically” he said.
“These include febrile seizures, urinary infections, skin infections and heat exhaustion.
Dr. Sankar also said that cases of accidental ingestions of kerosene, phenyl and toilet cleaner are coming in, as thirsty children mistook the liquids for beverages, especially if they were stored in soft drink bottles.
Cases of diarrhoeal disease have started coming in at SIMS Hospital, said consultant physician Jaichitra Suresh.
As water lorries are used more in the dry season, we are also checking their sources of water to see if they are safe.
While diarrhoeal disease is an acute condition, leptospirosis, typhoid and others are slower to develop, he said.

Scorching heat and no water supply! Travails of 60% citizens yesterday

Scorching heat and no water supply!
Travails of 60% citizens yesterday.
Nagpur: Lack of power 45 Kms at Nawegaon Khairi on Sunday ensured the pumping station there could not send water to Nagpur and many overhead water tanks did not get filled.
This resulted in minimum or no water supply to almost 60% of the city on entire Sunday and first part of Monday.
On a day when heat had gone to an impossible high of 46.2* this was a heartless joke on most Nagpurians who could not run coolers, could not take a cool shower and some did not even have adequate drinking water!
Most wards in North, Central and East Nagpur were affected and one could see Corporators also running from pillar to post to help people out with water supply.
So irate was the public that in Wanjari Nagar an OCW employee involved with arranging water tankers was almost attacked by a mob.
OCW Public Relations Manager Sachin Darwekar has assured that today, i.e. Tuesday, all water scarcity will be gone and regular supply resumed.

GUWAHATI, May 16 – As summer sets in, residents in many localities of Guwahati are reeling under severe water crisis, much of it blamed on short supply of water by agencies responsible for providing piped water supply to the people in the city.
There are complaints from various places, including Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Hengerabari, Sarumataria, Rukminigaon etc.
“While we have restricted our daily usage, we have been forced to buy water due to short supply.
“The government is talking about smart city.
The problem has been persisting for the last few weeks, and the authorities appear unmoved despite the growing inconveniences faced by the people of the capital city.
There are also reports of unscrupulous people extracting water from the supply lines using motors (pumps), thus reducing the flow to other lines.
“In our locality we used to get water supply at full force for up to four hours every day in the afternoon.
“Moreover, the residents getting water supply through the Nabagraha line are also getting irregular water supply.

How Water Shortage Sparked Boko Haram Wars In Northeast Nigeria

On hearing the arrival of newborn, the village women began to take their empty water cans to embark on a walk to the neighbouring village to fetch water.
The trek to the next village has in the past years been strewn with life threatening possibilities.
The water basin of the lake is drying up.
Water is the currency of life and economic activities in the Lake Chad region.
As soon as Amsatu weaned her baby and is back on her feet, it becomes incumbent on her to contribute water to the families of other women in the village that have gone into labour.
In recent years, the region has witnessed both the drying up of rivers and drought, the result of this is an ensuing competition by locals to migrate to communities in areas where there are pastures.
Nothing ever gets reported of these little wars because they get swallowed up in the bigger conflict that is the Boko Haram insurgency.
Investigations by this reporter also reveal that availability of vegetation and water are often a motivation for Boko Haram insurgents’ invasion of communities in the past four years.
The incidence of clashes between villagers that are mainly farmers and armed herdsmen in areas where there is water resource has refused to go away.
Abbas has warned that, “Irrigation water abstraction on the banks and from digging wells and puddles on the dry bed lead to an unprecedented drying up of rivers.” A villager, Abubakar Grema said, the situation in his village close to Banki town at the border with Cameroon was very dire, “sadly, we have resisted other villagers from settling in our village in order to safeguard our scarce water resource.” They have often used the water in their village to appease the insurgents who also are in need of it, and because of this arrangement, they were hardly attacked by them.
