Silent leaks add up
Incentives help motivate existing homeowners to buy water-efficient appliances and save more water.
It’s not just toilets that have improved.
Phyn Plus detects leaks and notifies the homeowner of a leak immediately.
Implementing these types of technologies will change our acceptance of silent leaks.
A silent leak doesn’t cost a ton of money but a large water leak costs an average of $9,000, per the insurance industry.
In a recent conversation, a local plumber said he had two projects caused by water leaks.
Just this one device in every home within the City of Santa Fe could potentially reduce our overall water use by up to five gallons per person per day.
Conserving water is up to each and everyone of us.
Regulations, incentives and outreach are all important, but so is incorporating the adoption of leading water saving technologies that work makes good economic and environmental sense in our part of the world.

Source of life
First, due to the increasing scale of saline or brackish water, there is increased contamination of ground water with excess sodium level and hence unavailability of soft or sweet water for domestic and agriculture consumption.
The second issue relates to the degradation of mangrove forests, which can overcome the first issue, and significantly compounds the problem for the coastal areas of Pakistan.
In the coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan, especially along the coastal belt of Gwadar and Karachi, ground water is often brackish or saline due to its proximity to the sea.
According to estimates, each year in Pakistan an equivalent of 650 acres of dense mangrove forests is used as fuel in the coastal areas.
Scientists consider mangroves a natural agent of converting saline water into fresh water.
However, this technology has certain drawbacks such as high energy consumption, short durability, treatment of membrane fouling and high maintenance cost.
In case of Pakistan, the plant may use solar energy to operate the desalination plants.
Nature itself is an efficient and effective way to overcome the problem of saline water.
They have a natural ability to filter sodium from contaminated ground water.
Such incentives and awareness regarding the significance of mangroves among the local communities should be taken up by the government.
Ward officers told to visit areas with water scarcity
Mumbai: If you have a water supply problem in your area, the assistant commissioner of the concerned ward will personally visit your locality and attend to your grievances.
Civic chief Ajoy Mehta has directed all ward officers to make personal visits to places where there is water scarcity and provide immediate solutions to residents.
With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) facing severe flak due to water shortage across the city, Mr Mehta has decided to take desperate measures to tackle the problem.
In a monthly review meeting held at the civic headquarters Saturday, Mr Mehta asked ward officers and officials of the hydraulic and water supply departments to work in tandem to resolve the people’s grievances.
“In the meeting, the commissioner said that in areas affected by irregular water supply, the concerned ward officers should personally look into those complaints and if needed, make spot visits to resolve the grievances.
In addition to this, ward officers of all 24 wards should regularly co-ordinate with officials of the hydraulic department and assistant engineer (water supply) in their wards and make necessary arrangements on priority basis,” said a senior civic official.
A ruckus erupted in the BMC house Friday over the water shortage problem in several pockets of the city.
Opposition party members in the BMC threatened to stage a dharna at the mayor’s bungalow at Shivaji Park if water supply was not normalised before Diwali.
They also alleged that the shortage of water was causing an increase in the number of contamination complaints in the city.
CM hits out at Chavan for politicising water crisis
Aurangabad: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday hit out at Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan for allegedly politicising the issue of water-scarcity in the state.
“The ‘Jan Sangharsh Yatra’ (public campaign) being launched by the Congress is not supported by commoners.
The campaign has failed miserably,” he said.
Speaking with the reporters on the sideline of his official visit tour in Jalna, Fadnavis said the state government would leave no stone unturned to tackle the water crisis situation.
The chief minister also took stock of the water-scarcity situation as a part of the series of official meetings being held by him in worst-affected districts across the state.
Being asked whether the BJP-led state government is protecting culprits behind the multi-crore irrigation scam, Fadnavis refuted charges of shielding anybody.
“The SIT is probing the scam under the supervision of the court.
The chargesheet has been also filed in the matter,” he said.
Earlier, a few NCP workers faced the wrath of the police for trying to breach the security protocol in an attempt to meet the chief minister for handing over a memorandum of their demands.
Police had to resort to lathi charge when the workers forcefully tried to enter the venue where Fadnavis was scheduled to hold a meeting.
Water scarcity likely to hit Udaipur in coming months
UDAIPUR : Heavy monsoon and overflowing lakes assure at least a year long uninterrupted supply of potable water for Udaipur homes.
According to expert Piyush Joshi, a retired engineer from the water supply department, evaporation also accounts for the reducing level of water in reservoirs, however in winters the rate of vapourisation is comparatively lesser than in summers.
Pichhola had a capacity of 483 Mcft and presently it has a stock of 8,300 million litre water while Fatehsagar’s water holding capacity is 427 Mcft against which it has 6,655 million litre stock.
People are elated for the very reason during the four rainy months.
Meanwhile activists and morning walkers who are regular visitors of the water bodiea are saddened by the site of the bare land on the lake shores.

MIDC seeks 468 mcft water from reservoirs
NASHIK: The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), which supplies water to the industrial estates in Sinnar, Satpur and Ambad, has decided to take a call on water cut after the water quota is finalised by the water resource department (WRD).
In a meeting with the district administration, the MIDC has demanded 204 million cubic feet (mcft) water for Sinnar and 264 mcft for Satpur and Ambad industrial estates.
“The district administration is yet to take a call.
This is expected shortly.
We will take a decision on water cut once our quota is fixed,” an MIDC official said.
“Considering the water scarcity during summer, particularly from March to May, we will have put curbs right from the beginning.
That will help us cater to industries till the beginning of the next monsoon,” he said.
Satpur and Ambad industrial estates require total 21 million litres per day (MLD), while Sinnar MIDC requires 16 MLD.
During March-May 2016, the MIDC had to impose 90% water cut in Sinnar industrial estate due to non-availability of water in Darna dam.
The water cut had resulted in production losses of Rs 300 crore during the three months.
Climate Change: Water Scarcity Will Become A Major Challenge
It is anticipated to have an increasing impact on human health, security, livelihoods, and poverty levels in Asia and the Pacific.
Food productivity and human security is projected to decline in many Asian countries.
Both climatic and non-climatic drivers are affecting the extreme vulnerability of the Pacific region.
So, it was timely and appropriate that the United Nations Environment Programme-Asia-Pacific Adaptation Network (UNEP-APAN) organized the Climate Change Adaptation Forum for the sixth time in Manila recently to discuss ways to make the world a better and safer place to live in.
The three-day event was co-hosted by the Climate Change Commission, Philippines, the Government of the Republic of Palau, and the Asian Development Bank.
Since the impact of climate change affect the poor and the marginalized the most, the participants felt that the damages, threats and vulnerability of such calamities should be shared by all.
Mr Anand Patwardhan, Director General of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development, in his keynote address delivered from Stockholm exhorted countries to share knowledge on adaptation with other nations for the benefit of others.
While glancing through the newspapers, I found two articles on climate change published in them — one on a new “Hyper alarming” study showing massive insect loss even in protected natural reserves and the other on Pasig River winning the first Asia River Prize award.
According to the study, there is dramatic decline in invertebrate populations.
The study also found that the number of insect-eating frogs has also decreased.
Govt Prepares Rs 2bln Project To Provide Clean Drinking Water To Islamabad: National Assembly Told
The minister expressed these views while responding to a calling attention notice regarding non-availability of potable water in all parts of the country particularly Islamabad and Karachi.
He said the federal government had formed a task force under the Sindh governor to address water scarcity and other important issues in Karachi.
The minister said water supply was a devolved subject under the 18th amendment; however, the federal government was very much concerned over it and would extend full support to the provinces in that regard.
About the K4 water project in Karachi, he said about Rs 12 billion had been released to the Sindh government.
He said the federal government and the provincial governments needed to collaborate and take steps to ensure that every citizen of the country had clean drinking water.
He said water issue required attention of all the political parties.
He said Prime Minister Imran Khan recently chaired a meeting of National Water Council and stressed the need for integrated approach for conservation, storage, management and efficient utilization of the available water resources.
He stressed the need for chalking out a comprehensive roadmap in consultation with provinces and other stakeholders, for the implementation of National Water Policy (NWP).
Pakistan Muslim League Ahsan Iqbal dispelled the impression that his government had not focused on water issues.
Pakistan Peoples Party Syed Khursheed Shah alleged that no funds had been allocated by the federal government to address water issue in Karachi.
Water scarcity: Sopore residents protest against PHE
Protestors said they have brought the matter to the notice of concerned authorities but nothing has been done to restore water supply in the area.
Scores of residents of Green Town bypass Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district staged a protest against the alleged failure of Public Health Engineering department in providing drinking water to residents.
The protesters which included women said they had been facing shortage of water for the past one month.

Experts warns of worst water crisis by 2025
Pakistan will approach supreme water scarcity by 2025.
In 1990, Pakistan touched the ‘water stress line’ and crossed the ‘water scarcity line’ in 2005.
The heavy crowded countries were facing the worst climate change effects.
Trees were essential part of healthy environment for a better life.
There’s a need of time to turn the areas especially at the banks of canal lush green.
Whereas, water shortage reaches 1,000 cubic meter level.
The water crisis issue must be importunate at the national and international level.
The government needs to take all possible steps to come out with inferior water crisis.
Eco-friendly environment recently faced severe smog.
Water was being pumped out from tube-wells that were responsible for lowering down the groundwater level.
