India Lags Behind Bangladesh In Providing Clean Drinking Water To Villages: NITI Ayog

The ‘Composite Water Management Index’ report surveyed the ground water levels across India, among other factors, and predicted that 21 Indian cities will have no water by 2020.
In fact, by 2020, 21 major cities, including Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, are expected to reach zero groundwater levels, affecting access for 100 million people," the report said.
The study also found that the median state in a list on providing water supply on urban areas, could only provide water to 75 percent of the state’s urban population.
Bihar could only provide water to 20 percent of its urban population, and states like Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Kerala weren’t faring to well either.
Rajasthan could only provide 38 percent of its urban population with drinking water in 2016-17.
In comparison, Gujarat provided drinking water to 100 percent of its urban population, and Madhya Pradesh and Punjab were close behind.
In the foreword, Amitabh Kant, director of NITI Aayog wrote that 70% of the drinking water being supplied to households in India is contaminated.
"With nearly 70 percent of water being contaminated, India is placed at 120th amongst 122 countries in the water quality index," he wrote.
The contamination of water is more rampant in rural areas, the report stated.
According to surveys cited by the report, 800 million people in India live in rural areas and form 70 percent of the country’s population.

Report warns 21 Indian cities will run out of water by 2020

A new study by the Indian’s government’s policy think-tank Niti Aayog this week published some alarming statistics, warning that India is facing its worst-ever water crisis, with some 600 million people facing acute water shortage The Composite Water Resources Management report which compiled data from 24 of India’s 29 states warns that about 600 million Indians are facing high to extreme stress over water, and it’s only going to get worse.
And because of increasing demand, 21 of India’s cities will be out of groundwater by 2020, an alarming situation that also threatens food security, seeing as 80 percent of water is used for agriculture.
The majority of India’s 1.25 billion population lives in the countryside, and winning rural voters is key to election victory in the world’s largest democracy SAM PANTHAKY, AFP/File The study stressed the need for the government to take action on restoring water bodies, otherwise, the situation could lead to conflicts within the country.
And to add insult to injury, a study published by Duke University earlier this month found widespread uranium contamination in aquifer-drawn groundwater in 16 Indian states.
India’s water problems The hard fact to digest is that over 200,000 people die every year in India due to a lack of access to safe water.
In Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat, there have been tensions over water allocations for two reservoirs connected to the Narmada river.
YouTube Tensions have already raised their ugly heads – with eleven states already locked in at least seven major disputes over the sharing of river water.
84 percent of rural households do not have piped water access.
70 percent of our water is contaminated; India is currently ranked 120 among 122 countries in the water quality index.

Telangana water index slips into danger zone

HYDERABAD: is ranked 10th in overall composite water management index with a score of 49.6 in 2016-17, despite improving its performance in water resources management when compared to previous year.
According to a report released by NITI Aayog, Telangana is ranked among red category states with a low score that also includes Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Goa.
ranked third in the overall index.
It said Telangana restored 70 per cent of its irrigation potential of identified bodies and 90 per cent of critical wells.
The report stated Telangana is also doing well in urban water supply.
Listing steps needed to improve the situation, the report said, Telangana has not yet begun the process of power feeder segregation and it’s one of the few states which don’t charge for borewell electricity and has negligible micro-irrigation coverage.
The report said the state’s rural drinking water supply scenario needs to improve as only 55 per cent rural habitations have been adequately covered.
Besides, there has been no improvement in water quality in the rural areas, it said.
According to NITI Aayog, the state index score for the base year 2015-16 was 45.2 and it has risen to 49.6 in 2016-17.

Rajasthan ranks low on drinking water supply for villages, says Niti Aayog report

JAIPUR: With only 44 per cent of its rural habitations fully covered by drinking water supply, Rajasthan ranks low in a recent Niti Aayog report.
The Niti Aayog has asked the state to improve the access rate and the quality of drinking water in rural habitations while lauding its efforts in surface water restoration and participatory irrigation.
The report, which includes a composite water management index, said there has been no improvement in water quality – in terms of contamination by arsenic and fluoride – in 2016-17 compared to the previous financial year.
Despite the challenges in the water-scarce state, the state government is working on various public welfare water projects, Public Health Engineering and Groundwater Minister Surendra Goyal told PTI.
We will be spending close to Rs 20,000 crore on projects to make surface water available to the people in rural and urban areas, he said.
The minister said 90 per cent of the country’s brackish water and 50 per cent of its fluoridated water is found in Rajasthan, so providing safe water was a time-consuming challenge.
Niti Aayog has appreciated Rajasthan’s efforts in restoring 80 per cent of the irrigation potential of identified water bodies, largely through community-managed ponds and tanks.
Rajasthan has also improved its score on participatory irrigation and source restoration.
The report said it has emerged as a leader in participatory irrigation with 75 per cent of irrigated areas.

India faces ‘worst ever’ water crisis: report

India is facing its worst ever water crisis, a new report by a government advisory body warns.
"Critical groundwater resources, which account for 40 percent of our water supply, are being depleted at unsustainable rates," the report warns.
We are all going to pay a heavy price when the water runs out.
"After all, we are all going to pay a heavy price when the water runs out.
"What this report says was true 15 years ago, now the situation has worsened.
"The rich will still waste water if you increase prices, while the poor won’t be able to afford it.
The answer lies in sustainable ways of conserving water," Singh says.
Depleting groundwater reserves clubbed with climatic changes such as rising temperatures could further hit water scarcity, experts warn.
Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has witnessed tensions over the water allocations for two reservoirs connected by the Narmada river.
Eleven Indian states are locked in seven major disputes over river water-sharing.

Residents in southern Iowa finally have clean drinking water

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) — Residents in several southern Iowa counties now have access to clean drinking water after a weekslong water-boil advisory was lifted Saturday, the Southern Iowa Water Rural Association said in a news release.
The drinking water advisory had been implemented after the 12-Mile Treatment Plant at Creston Water Works had a failure in its membrane filtration system.
Customers were warned that the water could contain bacteria, viruses and parasites.
The water association advised customers to use boiled or bottled water.
The boil advisory affected residents in Adair, Madison, Adams, Union, Taylor, Clarke, Ringgold and Decatur counties.
It is unclear whether those customers will have a reduced water bill because of the advisory, which lasted 16 days.
Hy-Vee had donated 20,000 gallons of bottled water at the Creston, Bedford and Mount Ayr stores, while its supplier partners, Pepsi Beverages Co. and Anheuser-Busch, donated more than 6,000 gallons of bottled water to southern Iowa communities impacted by the boil advisory and drinking water warning.

India suffering from worst water crisis in history, millions of lives under threat: Niti Aayog’s Water Management Index

Currently, 600 million Indians face high to extreme water stress and about two lakh people die every year due to inadequate access to safe water, said the NITI Aayog report on Composite Water Management Index (CWMI) released on Thursday.
It said that "40 per cent of the population will have no access to access drinking water by 2030", while 21 cities, including "New Delhi, Chennai, and Hyderabad, will run out of ground water by 2020, affecting 100 million people".
India is currently ranked 120 among 122 countries in the water quality index.
Thus, there is an imminent need to deepen our understanding of our water resources and usage and put in place interventions that make our water use efficient and sustainable."
"..if nothing changes, and fast, things will get much worse," it said.
By 2030, the country’s water demand is projected to be twice the available supply, implying severe water scarcity for hundreds of millions of people and an eventual 6% loss in the country’s GDP by 2050, the report stated.
Critical groundwater resources – which account for 40% of our water supply – are being depleted at unsustainable rates, it added.
"The country faces significant risks as the low performers on the Water Index are home to ~50% of the country’s population and its agricultural baskets.
The low performers are, worryingly, comprised of the populous northern states of UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, and others, and are home to over 600 million people," the report said.
According to the NITI Aayog report, Centre-state and inter-state cooperation were some of the key levers to help address the crisis.

Water Fountains Everywhere But Fewer Drops To Drink

The Chicago Park District may shut down half of its outdoor drinking fountains this season in a move aimed at protecting the public from lead exposure, officials say.
The decision comes after two years of the district grappling with high lead levels in the water of hundreds of its drinking fountains.
The announcement arrives about six weeks before an estimated 40,000 Chicago kids, ages 6 to 12, start park district day camp.
WBEZ learned of the shut-offs through open records requests and an interview this week with Chicago Park District Director of the Environmental Services Dan Cooper.
Flushing worked for most fountains; about 70 percent delivered water below the federal action level when returned to push-button use.
Their lead levels spiked above federal action levels when returned to normal use, prompting the district to run them continuously all season.
The 500 or so that have never registered lead issues will operate normally, but the 750 that have registered detectable levels (some up to 80 times the federal action limit) will either be turned off or left on continuous flow.
“We’ll either run them full time or not at all,” says Park’s Environmental Services Director Cooper.
This year, the park district has already permanently removed more than 100 fountains from district property because of lead issues, Cooper says.
“I’m concerned about public water fountains for the same reason,” she says.

World Bank Approves US$100 Million for Water Supply in Indonesia

6 June 2018: Indonesia has received a World Bank loan of US$100 million for its National Urban Water Supply Project.
The loan will enable the provision of water supply and sanitation to six million people in the country, through promoting access to safe water, and improving the performance of water service providers in under-served urban areas.
Indonesia has set a national target of universal access to water supply and sanitation by 2019, ahead of the 2030 deadline for SDG 6.1 on drinking water and SDG 6.2 on sanitation and hygiene.
The project will support the central government in channeling water-related investments to at least 40 local governments and their local government-owned water supply enterprises.
World Bank officials stated that the project will address health issues among the population, such as stunting and malnutrition (SDG 3), reduce inequalities (SDG 10), and provide basic public services that will enable people to gain the full benefits of urbanization (SDG 11).
Other benefits will include improvements in human resource capacity at local water utilities, and promotion of Indonesia’s resilience in the face of climate change.
Almost half of all Indonesians currently lack access to safe water, and more than 70% rely on potentially contaminated sources.

Natadradave Village Benefits From $212K Water Project

The $212,765 water project included the construction of a new dam, the installation of a three-inch strainer and a three-inch outlet valve, the laying of a three-inch diameter water main from the dam to the reservoir, the laying of a two-inch diameter main from the reservoir to the village, and the construction of a 10,000 gallon ferro-cement water tank.
The villagers, at times travelled to Vorovoro Village, approximately one-kilometre away to fetch water.
“This empowers the Water Committee to be responsible for ongoing maintenance and repairs, thus ensuring the longevity and sustainability of their village water supply system,” Mr Ekanayake said.
“For this project, the village water committee received $2952.96 as payment for the village assistance provided.” Mr Ekanayake said the villagers now enjoyed a consistent supply of water that should withstand dry seasons, and an improved, water system performance.
Mr Ekanayake said WAF would continue to implement works that ensure Fijians have access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation.
