Drinking water around an oil-producing area in South Sudan is heavily polluted. A German NGO puts the blame on Malaysian oil company Petronas. It has also become a subject of embarrassment for carmaker Daimler. Klaus Stieglitz came across the problem of drinking water by chance. “In 2007, one of our project partners informed us that the water tasted bad,” he said. Stieglitz and his colleagues at the aid organization “Sign of Hope” went ahead to investigate the situation in South Sudan. They collected water samples near the oil fields in Thar Jath in Unity State. The analysis showed that the taste was the smallest problem. Water from some wells had a salt content almost four times higher than allowed. Now Sign of Hope has presented the results of another study in Berlin. It is based on analysis of 96 hair samples collected in four locations. Toxicologist Fritz Prangst evaluated the results. Varanasi scored favourably over Lucknow on parameters of air pollution, water pollution and municipal solid waste, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India has noted in its latest report (March 31, 2016). The report was tabled in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Thursday and factored in studies conducted between 2011 and 2015 by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board and the U.P. Jal Nigam. The audit report noticed that the water pollution in river Ganga near Varanasi and air pollution in Varanasi during the period 2011-2015 was less than that of the river Gomti in Lucknow. Water tested at a pair of contaminated Airway Heights wells contains chemical concentrations more than 15 times greater than thresholds established by federal regulators, according to city officials. The Environmental Protection Agency has established a limit of 70 parts per trillion for chemicals, known by the acronyms PFOA and PFOS, that were used for decades in fire-retardant foam at a fire training site on Fairchild Air Force Base. Two wells tested in Airway Heights showed levels above 1,100 parts per trillion, City Manager Albert Tripp said. The wells have been shut off from the system as part of a flushing process that is expected to last until at least Monday, when the city will again test its supplies for traces of the chemicals. The levels established by the EPA are not enforceable under any federal law, and the Spokane Regional Health District stresses that the link between exposure and potential health problems is not yet completely understood. Airway Heights is pumping water into its system from Spokane to meet demand during the flushing period. The city has been releasing potentially contaminated water from hydrants in locations that would minimize any new contamination, including spraying it in areas where city irrigation has been occurring for years, Anderson said. “We’re trying to discharge it onto city properties as much as possible,” Anderson said. Westview students look to make a change
Students at Estevan’s Westview Elementary School have made it into the top 150 finalists for the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge.
The annual Solve for Tomorrow Challenge is geared toward Canadian students in grades 6 to 12 who find problems in their local communities and has them use STEM technologies to address the issues.
Davenport’s Grade 7 class and the other 149 finalists are now that much closer to becoming one of four regional winners, who’ll get presented with $20,000 Samsung technology grant packages.
The four winning finalists will also get a special event with Canadian rocket scientist Natalie Panek, who’s part of the Canadian contingent working on the European Space Agencies ExoMars rover.
“Especially evident with my recent work on the European Space Agency’s ExoMars Rover project, is that a career in STEM carries boundless opportunities.
“I’m so excited to meet these bright minds of tomorrow through Solve for Tomorrow—who knows, they might be the minds designing the next big space telescope or the spacesuits crew members will wear on a mission to Mars!” All of of the 150 regional finalist schools will get a Samsung technology package, which includes a Samsung Gear VR and Samsung Gear360 camera to help them in finishing their next ‘assignment’ as part of the Challenge: documenting the execution of their community solution in a three-minute video.

The work consists of designs, construction plans and obtaining permits.
The pump stations are located in East Vandergrift; Elder Run in Gilpin, near the former ATI Bagdad plant; Guffy Run, near the Parks Bend Industrial Park in Parks Township; Leechburg; Penn Run, in West Leechburg; Wean United; and Vandergrift.
The authority board will look at financing options at a later date.
“We have to determine the priorities after the study is done,” board member Bob Polczynski of Allegheny Township said.
Penn Run enters a small culvert underneath the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks.
The Kiski Valley Water Pollution Control Authority’s treatment system came on line in 1975.
It currently serves 14,000 customers in 13 municipalities.
