Govt to conduct study on city’s pollution level

Govt to conduct study on city’s pollution level.
PATNA: Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA) will soon conduct a study on air, soil, water and noise pollution in Patna in order to find solutions for improving the overall environment in the state capital.
The study will also include preparation of pollution-based mapping of different areas.
Sources said the inception report on the study is targeted to be readied by June-end.
"Patna has lately emerged as one of the most polluted cities in the country, primarily with regard to air pollution.
Since no in-depth climate related vulnerability and risk analysis currently exists for the state, it is felt pertinent that such an in-depth vulnerability and risk analyses should be carried out.
Senior BSDMA officials said Patna has been adjudged as third most polluted state capital in India.
Preliminary assessment of BSDMA suggests that the overall environmental condition in Patna has deteriorated due to a situation driven by population growth, unplanned development, migration, industrialisation and increased improper vehicle traffic moderation, depletion of green covers and increased construction activities.
Patna is apparently quite a noisy city too.
According to recent estimates, Patna generates 290 million litres of waste water on daily basis.

EPA chief recuses himself from lawsuits he was involved in as Oklahoma’s attorney general

EPA chief recuses himself from lawsuits he was involved in as Oklahoma’s attorney general.
(WASHINGTON) — EPA chief Scott Pruitt has recused himself from lawsuits against the Environmental Protection Agency that he was involved in as Oklahoma’s attorney general.
“I am taking this action to avoid even the appearance of any impropriety,” Pruitt said in the statement.
In his previous role as Oklahoma attorney general, Pruitt participated in more than a dozen lawsuits against the EPA, including challenges to the Obama-era’s Clean Power Plan and a rule related to the Clean Water Act.
During Pruitt’s confirmation hearing, Democrats pressed him on his stances on rules intended to protect against climate change and air and water pollution and urged him to recuse himself from the 14 cases in which he had participated in lawsuits against the agency he was named to lead.
“What the American people are expecting here is that the EPA doesn’t turn into every polluters’ ally,” Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass.)
said to Pruitt during his hearing, urging him to recuse himself “from every case you brought.” Pruitt at the hearing discussed his view that the bulk of environmental regulations should be in the hands of the states.
In explaining his decision to now recuse himself from the lawsuits, Pruitt wrote in the statement that he had conferred with the Office of General Counsel’s Ethics Office and determined, “I must recuse myself from matters in which I have a financial interest, or a personal or business relationship.” The EPA did not immediately respond to ABC’s request for comment on the recusal statement.

Montague Town Meeting approves 2.75% budget increase

Montague Town Meeting approves 2.75% budget increase.
TURNERS FALLS — Among the nearly 50 articles debated during Montague’s six hour town meeting on Saturday included measures to fund improvement projects at Montague schools and libraries.
The town also approved funding for a new air ventilation system and repairing the roof at Carnegie Library.
The town also secured $5,000 in funding for a new website and $4,500 for new public records request software.
The warrant had a total of 47 articles, with four of those being petitioned articles by voters in the community.
Two were non-financial resolutions: one to limit the influence of money in politics, which passed unanimously and another to establish a policy on undocumented immigrant detainer requests, which passed with an amendment.
Only two articles failed, one by request of those presenting it, who asked for more time.
The other was an article requesting the town generate a Municipal Light Plan, which failed.
The measure was something left over from previous efforts to bring high-speed internet to parts of Montague with no internet access.

The History Behind Oscoda’s Water Contamination

The History Behind Oscoda’s Water Contamination.
Understanding a complex issue like the Oscoda groundwater contamination takes time, and as it turns out, a history lesson doesn’t hurt.
Bob Delaney, Michigan’s Environmental Quality Specialist explained that while people have a right to be concerned about the contaminants, understanding the history behind the Air Force’s decision to use those chemicals is essential to getting a broader understanding of the topic.
In the end 134 sailors died, 161 sailors were injured, and a half billion dollars worth of damage was done,” reported Delaney.
The Navy realized right away they couldn’t stomach those kind of losses, so in an attempt to protect their men and future flights, they decided to find something that could extinguish fires much more efficiently.
They worked with 3M, and they came up with a fire fighting foam called A Triple F that would put out flames in one minute.
“Say this plane goes down, and it’s burning.
So three minutes until everyone’s dead in that plane.
They figured it takes two minutes to drive out to the plane and set up, and one minute to get that fire out.

Column: How a reporting trip to coal country inspired my 7-year-old’s science fair project

Column: How a reporting trip to coal country inspired my 7-year-old’s science fair project.
A recent trip to the coal mines of West Virginia afforded me a unique opportunity to bring what I learned in the field back home — in this case for my son’s science fair project.
Scientists were measuring, not for specific contaminants, but for conductivity.
When I got home and saw those piles I remembered what we had just learned about water pollution and pitched my kid on a simple idea — if the grownup real scientists we were documenting could use a simple measure like conductivity, couldn’t we do it at home too?
Declan and his younger brother Calder set out with me and my wife to gather samples: first, the clean snow that was still around on our roof, then the dirty snow piled up on the sidewalk next to our house.
To round out our toxic water sampling, we also headed up to Newtown Creek — another Superfund site where we encountered a challenge to find actual access to the water.
His results showed that both kinds of snow, as well as the disgusting sludge water from Newtown Creek appeared to have the highest conductivity.
It’s hard to say how accurate these results are, but we did learn some valuable lessons about this research and the scientific process.
Second, water evaporates if you wait a while between collecting the sample and measuring it, which reduces the consistency of the volumes used for the measurement.
If he so chooses, our son has many years of science fair projects ahead of him working on this same problem.

What Can Be Done About Vermont’s Aging Sewer Systems?

When the federal Clean Water Act passed in 1972, many parts of the state still didn’t have treatment plants.
When the systems overload like that, they can either allow that excess sewage and stormwater to back up into homes and businesses (which everyone seems to agree is not a good idea) or use “Combined Sewer Overflows.” The overflows are parts of the system designed to deal with overloads by simply letting some of that untreated sewage and stormwater go.
Instead of flowing to the treatment plant, it flows directly into a river or stream instead.
To get a better sense of how these systems work and what’s being done to stop overflows, we visited Rutland, where our question-asker Mike grew up, and where Taylor has done some previous reporting about sewage overflows.
Send the sewage to the treatment plant, and treat stormwater on its own, so it doesn’t cause overflows.
But Jeff Wennberg does see a different answer here: one that would keep combined sewer systems, but try to reduce overflows.
Albrecht says the idea with green infrastructure is to let stormwater do what it used to do.
Separate sewage from stormwater where it makes sense, slow the stormwater down so there’s less to deal with, and keep investing in the systems we’ve got.
This is how he put it back in 2015: “There’s no problem here with any of this infrastructure that can’t be fixed.
So, again, why isn’t Deen’s Natural Resources Committee throwing money at the sewer overflow issue?

UAE fish safety rumours are false: ministry

UAE fish safety rumours are false: ministry.
Dubai: Fish and other seafood captured in UAE waters are safe for consumption, said a senior Ministry Climate Change and Environment official (MOCCAE), brushing aside rumours that water pollution is affecting the quality of seafood.
Refuting rumours circulating on social media, Salah Abdullah Al Rayeesi, Director of the Sustainability of Marine and Coastal Environments at MOCCAE, reaffirmed that specialised teams regularly monitor water quality in the UAE through sampling and analysis to ensure that it’s free from any substances that affect the public’s health.
He also confirmed that an external auditing team carried out inspection visits to all fish markets last Thursday to examine the fish, and assured the public that there is no harm in consuming local and imported sea food.
Al Rayeesi said that UAE has given the food safety issue much attention and has over the past years strengthened its legislative and institutional frameworks related to food safety.
He added that the UAE has developed integrated and effective control systems on food products, both domestic and imported, including the development of laboratories, while tightening food safety and control measures on food establishments and workers to ensure the highest level of food safety in the country.
He pointed out that the food safety rating in the UAE has increased in the last three years to reach 98 per cent in 2016.
Calling on community members not to be swayed by unreliable news or rumors about food safety he urged all residents to refrain from raising unwarranted concerns without verifying their authenticity from reliable official sources, stressing that the MOCCAE, as well as the UAE food safety authorities, welcome all public inquiries and respond to them directly.
