The swift response of the Oil Spill Response Team (OSRT) of the Sri Lanka Coastguard (SLCG) prevented oil pollutants from entering the Nilwala river during an oil spill incident recently (02nd January). According to SLCG sources the (OSRT) personnel took action to prevent a leaking of Bitumen Emulsion from a tank at the RDA work shop in Waralla.
The SLCG personnel laid oil booms in identified vulnerable areas of water inlets located in the Balakawala and Kathduwa in order to mitigate potential risk of contamination of oil with river water.
