GHMC to dispose Jawaharnagar landfill leachate

.
HYDERABAD: The huge quantity of ‘stored legacy leachate’ — 6.50 lakh cubic metres (M3), which has piled up to a height of 60 metres at the 102-acre Jawaharnagar landfill since 1995 is causing untold hardships to local people due to the nauseating smell it is emitting.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has drawn up plans to dispose of the pile-up in a phased manner with Central government funds.
As per the Concession Agreement between GHMC and Hyderabad integrated Municipal Solid Waste Limited (HMSW), the concessionaire has to do the work of reclamation and capping.
The officials said that for capping the legacy dump at Jawaharnagar landfill site and transferring leachate treatment to the sewage treatment plant (STP), the Union ministry of urban development has released Rs 25.72 crore in first instalment. The total cost of the project is Rs 146.95 crore, of which the central government’s share is 35 per cent under Swachh Bharat Mission (Rs 51.43 crore).
The capping area has been divided into the passive and active, based on the age of MSW dumped on the ground.
