NMMC confirms chemicals in nullah, asks MPCB to take action.
Navi Mumbai: The civic body has confirmed that untreated chemical effluents released from industries in MIDC have been polluting a natural drainage channel in Koparkhairane’s sector 11.
In the correspondence by the civic administration in June, officials from MPCB have been asked to take stringent action against the blatant violations of environment rules in the industrial belt.
"The correspondence is meant to draw the attention of the authorities to the issue and initiate the necessary action.
MPCB has the provision to even close down industries that are flouting the norms.
I have asked the authorities to verify our findings and do the needful," said municipal commissioner Dr N Ramaswami.
"The report from both the labs has revealed the concentration of chloride, sulphur and other chemicals were not as per accepted parameters.
We have provided the authorities with the test reports and other relevant documents to ensure they take necessary action," an official said.
Activists have welcomed the development.
"Till date, only the residents were voicing their concerns but now the civic body has acknowledged the situation," said Saurabh Pandya, president of New Sector 11 association.
