Buford Highway reopens in DeKalb County; boil water advisory remains in effect

A four foot wide underground pipe broke near Buford Highway in Doraville, spilling about 100 million gallons of water and causing disruptions for most of DeKalb County.
By late Wednesday, water pressure was restored to everyone who lost it, but the pipe itself will take another day to fix.
Boil and conserve water notice until Saturday Residents in the affected area are being asked to boil water for at least one minute after water comes to a rolling boil prior to drinking, cooking or preparing baby food.
DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond released this statement regarding the boil water advisory in effect for residents in the county: "A large diameter water main break is causing water pressure in parts of the water system to drop to dangerously low levels.
DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management, in an abundance of caution, is issuing a Boil Water Advisory for the entire system.
In order to protect the public from a potential health hazard, all customers that have experienced water outages and/or low water pressures are advised to “boil” all water prior to use for drinking, cooking, or preparing baby food.

DeKalb main break: Residents could be under boil water advisory until Saturday

Crews are working around the clock to restore water services in DeKalb after a 48-inch water main broke Wednesday morning, disrupting a multitude of services across the county, including hospitals, businesses, restaurants and schools.
Buford Highway, which was shut down in Doraville most the day, has reopened.
But DeKalb officials said water pressure is still being restored to customers, and a boil water advisory remains in effect for the entire county.
Reggie Wells, acting director of DeKalb’s Watershed Management Department, said Wednesday night it could last for days.
That’s one reason shoppers scrambled to grab bottled water from many stores, clearing the shelves by mid-afternoon.
DeKalb’s Watershed Management department has been plagued by issues over the years, including outdated meters that led to widespread water billing issues and a decaying sewage system that is the source of regular spills.
6:35 a.m.: Crews have lowered a new water main into the ground at the site of the massive water main break, Channel 2 reported.
6:06 a.m.: Water has been restored to Perimeter Mall, which is set to reopen at 10 a.m. Thursday, officials said.
5:33 a.m.: Crews have made a hole for a new pipe, and the new pipe is on the scene.

Pine Grove’s boil water advisory may be lifted soon

Pine Grove borough’s boil water advisory caused by a water main break Monday may be lifted soon, according to Leonard Clark, streets and water supervisor.
Two days’ worth of clean water samples have to be taken before the advisory would change, he said.
By Tuesday, all customers had water pressure restored.
“You could see it bubbling up on the ground.” It took about 45 minutes to close six different valves in the system.
Aungst Excavating had been contracted by the borough to make the repair on the pipe, which is located about 12 feet underground, according to Clark.
Most of the repair had been completed by 6 p.m. Monday, but crews worked to flush hydrants throughout the evening, concluding the work by 9 p.m.
Last September, the borough council approved funding for a nearly $6 million water improvement project for the borough.
Upgrades will include the addition of two new wells in the Pleasant Valley area off Berger Road; a new water storage tank near the Pine Vista development; and a new 8-inch ductile iron water pipe from routes 125 and 443, along Tulpehocken Street, to Tulpehocken Street and Route 895.
The improvements should not result in a water rate increase, according to the borough council.
M&T Bank was used to obtain an interim line of credit of up to $2 million at a 2.2 percent interest rate to get the project started.
