Part of Albion under boil water advisory
Residents and business in a section of Albion are being advised to boil their water before using it after a substantial water main break.
The notice applies to the Main Street business district, north of the Erie Canal to Bacon Road, according to the Albion Department of Public Works.
A 10-inch main broke at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Authorities say water will likely need to be boiled for three or four days.
Tap water should be brought to a rolling boil and then boiled for a minute.
It should then be cooled before use.
Boiled or bottled water should be used for things like drinking, washing dishes and brushing teeth.
Breaks in water mains cause a loss of pressure which increases the chances untreated water and harmful microbes can enter the lines.
Harmful microbes in drinking water may cause symptoms including cramps, nausea, diarrhea and headaches.

Plumbing lines serving misters, drinking fountains and soda machines should also be flushed for five (5) minutes.
The first binful of ice from icemakers should also be discarded.
Austin sees spike in recycling after boil-water notice
Austin Resource Recovery saw the number of recyclables collected in October increase 8.7 percent from the same month last year, the Austin American-Statesman reported .
Austin officials told residents on Oct. 22 to boil their tap water before drinking it after rain and flooding overloaded water treatment plants’ capacity.
Austin handed out roughly 626,000 gallons of bottled water over four days.
Ron Romero, the city recycling center’s division manager for operations, said the amount of plastic recycled in three weeks following the crisis was "just crazy."
The center picked up roughly 5,230 tons of recycling in October, up from around 4,800 tons the same month last year.
"It was really a surprise.
"I don’t think they necessarily heeded that advice."
