Boil water order lifted in Cato
A boil water order issued in the Cayuga County village of Cato has been lifted.
The Health Department said the water system lost pressure due to a water line repair.
When water mains lose pressure, it increases the chance that untreated water and harmful microbes can enter drinking water.
Harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms and may pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems.
The advisory was in effect since Saturday.
Prince Rupert downgrades boil water advisory, plans ‘lessons learned’ report
PRINCE RUPERT, B.C.
— The City of Prince Rupert, B.C., has lifted a boil water advisory that left 12,000 residents without potable tap water for six weeks and says it’s working on a ‘lessons learned’ report for the future.
The city says Northern Health gave it approval to downgrade the notice to a water quality advisory, which means some risk remains for sensitive individuals.
Under a water quality advisory, newborns, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are still encouraged to boil tap water for one minute before consuming it.
The city says residents who still see milky or sediment-filled water should run cold water, preferably through a bathtub or laundry sink taps, until it clears.
The boil water advisory was put in place after a dry summer followed by a storm surge caused a spike in levels of cryptosporidium and giardia, which cause intestinal illnesses.
The length of the advisory prompted Community for Clean Water, a citizen advocate group, to criticize city officials for not having a preparedness plan in place.
In August, the city applied for funding to implement a two-phased water treatment system and replace a submarine line carrying potable water from two nearby lakes.
The city says staff will work with the health authority on a "lessons learned" report in case of similar conditions in the future, and the information will be presented at a council meeting next month.

Boil water advisory issued after main breaks in Fonda
FONDA — Village of Fonda residents have been issued a boil water advisory until further notice due to a water main break, authorities said.
A water main break on Hickory Hill Road on Monday morning led to water services needing to be shut off until Monday evening to allow Department of Public Works crews to repair the break, officials said.
Those affected by the water main break resided on Hickory Hill Road from the reservoir to Route 5 with users on Route 5, Pilling Drive and Perry Lane.
Residents affected by the water main break were issued notices by the village.

Liberals cut reserves’ boil advisories, but water-system problems linger
Data published on Indigenous Services Canada’s website show that 78 advisories have been rescinded since November, 2015.
Indigenous Services Canada uses a database called the Integrated Capital Management System (ICMS) to assess the risk that water systems present to the people they serve.
Annual inspections assess each system’s design, how well it’s being operated and maintained, record keeping, the operators’ training and the quality of source water; systems are then scored between 1 (presenting very low risk of producing unsafe water) and 10 (extreme risk).
“It’s really a good indication of progress," Mr. Westmacott said, "working with our First Nations partners to address the advisories before they are becoming long term.” Advisories are issued to warn people not to consume water that is unsafe, or at high risk of becoming so.
Many reserves, in contrast, have experienced advisories that drag on for years without remedy.
According to the First Nations Health Authority (which tests drinking water, inspects water systems and can recommend advisories on reserves in British Columbia), that’s an aesthetic issue, and doesn’t present a health risk.
The First Nations Health Authority later confirmed that Sahhaltkum’s manganese levels are above the new guidelines.
“And we have communities that are told they are getting a new [treatment] process.
Another common complaint from First Nations was that the nations themselves, and not the federal government, are driving the elimination of advisories.
It had been on a boil-water advisory for nearly five years.
