As Customers Deal With Third Flush And Boil Advisory Of 2017, PWSA Head Says It’s Unacceptable

A significant water main break in Pittsburgh’s East End led the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority to issue a precautionary flush and boil advisory affecting 7,000 households.
It’s the third advisory this year.
Contractors and PWSA staff have been working around the clock since Sunday morning to isolate and repair a break in a 20-inch water main on Centre Avenue near South Negley Avenue.
The vulnerabilities of that main are representative of nearly 70 percent of the water pipes in PWSA’s system, said Bob Weimar, PWSA’s interim executive director.
“And the problem is that it will break when it is exposed to a major change in temperature.” The pipes can become brittle and therefore more likely to break, he said.
In addition, Sunday’s break may have been caused by a pressure issue; a pump shut down at about the same time.
It’s unacceptable for customers to have undergone three precautionary flush and boil advisories in such a short timeframe, said Weimar.
“But we’ve taken in each case an abundance of caution to minimize the potential for any water quality problems that would affect the public,” he said.
It will take three to four days to repair the break on Centre Ave and to restore the street, said Weimar.
Water buffaloes are available to customers who are without water or unable to boil their water at: Shursave IGA Super Market at 4401 Liberty Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15224 CVS at 4610 Centre Avenue at North Craig Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 Fire Station 8 at 149 North Euclid Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 PWSA will know by 5 p.m. Tuesday if the advisory can be lifted, when they receive the results of tests conducted Monday.

7,000 PWSA Customers In East End Under Flush And Boil Advisory

A major water main break at Centre and South Negley avenues Sunday prompted the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority to issue a flush and boil water advisory for eight East End neighborhoods.
*UPDATED: This post was updated at 11:48 a.m., Dec. 18.
In a release, PWSA officials said the advisory, affecting roughly 7,000 customers, was precautionary.
"[The break] caused low and no water pressure for customers in the central and eastern sections of the City of Pittsburgh," according to the release.
"The main break was isolated, and pressure was restored today.
PWSA is issuing a precautionary boil water advisory to a limited area because a decrease in pressure can allow contaminants to enter the drinking water."
The advisory is for water used for consumption.
A map of the impacted neighborhoods is also available.
Neighborhoods under a boil advisory include Bloomfield, Central Lawrenceville, East Liberty, Friendship, Garfield, Highland Park, Morningside and Shadyside.
East End residents affected by the flush and boil advisory can also get clean water from three water buffaloes throughout the city at: Shursave IGA Super Market at 4401 Liberty Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15224 CVS at 4610 Centre Avenue at North Craig Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 Fire Station 8 at 149 North Euclid Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 Another water main break in the Middle Hill has disrupted service for PWSA customers.

PWSA issues boil advisory in eight Pittsburgh neighborhoods after water main break

A major water main break Sunday in the East End may have contaminated drinking water in eight Pittsburgh neighborhoods — and residents should boil their water as a precaution, according to the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority.
The 20-inch water main break was reported around 7 a.m. and was pinpointed to the intersection of Centre and South Negley avenues around 10:30 a.m., said Will Pickering, communications manager at PWSA.
The boil advisory affects approximately 7,000 homes and is expected to last at least until Tuesday evening, Mr. Pickering said.
“The major concern is that when the pressure drops there is an opportunity for bacteria to enter the void in the pipe, should there be a hole in the pipe,” Mr. Pickering said.
“When there is high pressure, there is no opportunity for pathogens to enter the pipe.” PWSA employees are testing the area’s water to ensure it is safe, Mr. Pickering said, and so far all of the tested water has been adequately disinfected.
The earliest that testing could conclude would be Tuesday evening, he said.
Crews began to repair the water main break Sunday and will continue Monday, he said.
Some areas of Centre Avenue have no water, he said, including two large apartment buildings and several commercial facilities.
PWSA has placed water tanks at the intersections of Centre and South Negley avenues, as well as at Centre and Euclid avenues, he said.
