At least a million tonnes of raw sewage pours into the waters of Guangdong’s Pearl River Delta in southern China every day, according to the nation’s top government environmental watchdog.
Greenpeace’s toxics campaigner Deng Tingting said pressure from Guangdong’s huge population was among the main drivers of contamination.
Some 35 of Guangzhou’s 51 waterways were deemed severely contaminated despite the city spending 30 billion yuan (US$4.36 billion or HK$33.86 billion) to try to tackle water pollution.

The project will connect each of the mobile home park’s 70 homes to the public water supply and redo its entire water system.
Contaminated groundwater flow is believed to have infiltrated one of seven Mashpee Water District public supply wells.
A third and potentially final sampling round is scheduled for later this month, he said.
The National Guard Bureau launched the program in 1996 to investigate possible areas of groundwater and soil contamination on the base.

A study raises link between urbanization and water contamination at Parlee Beach.
A study by environmental microbiology students at Mount Allison University has found there could be a link between development along the coast and fecal contamination of the water at Parlee Beach in Shediac.
Prof. Douglas Campbell started working on the project in November, when he was approached by community members in the Shediac area who were concerned about continuing problems with water quality.
