On California, the drought and the ‘yuck factor’

On California, the drought and the ‘yuck factor’.
David Sedlak: Our water systems bring water into our cities from great distances, and that means we need lots of infrastructure — dams, reservoirs, treatment plants and pipes.
Are these water recycling systems already being used in the state?
There are several of these advanced treatment plants in California.
It’s likely they’ll have a potable recycling project up and running in the coming decade.
The constructed wetlands that we’ve spent the most time studying is a system in Riverside County on the Santa Ana River called the Prado Wetlands.
We’re currently in the process of conducting experiments in support of several different types of wetland treatment systems that are being considered in the Bay Area.
Will climate change affect the country’s water supply?
What I’m happy to see is the state of California is using the drought as a reason to think about the future.
But very few people currently own them in California.

Policy & Legislation: Water Frameworks Directive

Policy & Legislation: Water Frameworks Directive.
In 2012 for example, 25,524 European citizens aged 15 and above were interviewed by telephone , at the request of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for the Environment to gauge public opinion on issues relating to water conservation and to establish whether awareness of water issues had improved over time (WWW1).
The Water Frameworks Directive is unique in that it establishes a framework for the protection of all waters and their dependent wildlife/habitats under one piece of environmental legislation (WWW3).
The Water Frameworks Directive aims to : protect/enhance all waters (surface, ground and coastal waters) achieve “good status” for all waters by December 2015 manage water bodies based on river basins (or catchments) involve the public streamline legislation The Birds, Habitats, and Nitrates Directives, along with regulations on drinking water, bathing waters, and urban waste are all key factors within the Water Frameworks Directive, as well as the Marine Strategy Frameworks Directive.
A major requirement of Member States within the Water Frameworks Directive is the preparation of River Basin Management Plans, comprised of three, five year planning cycles.
Ireland is currently within the second of these planning cycles.
1st Cycle River Basin Management Plans: 2009-2014 2nd Cycle River Basin Management Plans: 2015-2021 These plans are laid out with the goal of achieving Good Ecological Status of all waters.
Ireland will begin its second cycle in 2017, but is currently 2 years behind schedule and so the next cycle will last 4 years rather than 5.
Mr. Simon Coveney T.D.
Additionally, 73% of Irish rivers have been classified as “unpolluted” as of the last cycle, which is comparatively better than that of most other European countries.

Trump budget threatens key programs

Trump budget threatens key programs.
The history of genocide and assimilation of the indigenous people is hidden, as well as how we were forced to believe the white man’s way is the only way.
The administration has proposed cutting the EPA’s budget by $2.5 billion and DOI’s budget by $1.6 billion, which would eviscerate key programs that North Dakotans need to ensure that we leave a strong and healthy legacy for our children.
We will not be able to safeguard our public lands and our families’ drinking water if leaders in Washington continue to allow special interests to take priority over the needs of average Americans.
In North Dakota, headwater, rain-fed and seasonal streams contribute to the drinking water supplies of 290,000 people.
Rather than taking steps to ensure that our children and the generations that follow have access to clean drinking water, Trump and his administration have put the needs of corporate polluters first.
Cuts to DOI and EPA clearly signal to North Dakotans that this president does not care about our health or our outdoors.
Instead of maximizing sellouts to special interests, our leaders in Washington need to recognize what so many before them have: When our parks thrive, so do Americans.
We are counting on our leaders in Washington to reject any more cuts to the EPA and DOI for the sake of our most sacred resources in North Dakota — our lands and our waters.
North Dakotans across the state will resist any actions by our leaders in Washington that would harm our outdoor heritage, or the clean drinking water our children need.

How can we reduce water consumption in different industries?

Because of water shortage, food industry is also unable to produce enough food.
In this situation, it is very important for those people who are getting water more than their requirement to do their best to save water.
There are many industries, which are using a great amount of water, such as gas and oil industry, food industry and electricity plants.
These industries do not just consume water; they also waste a big amount of water on daily basis.
There was a time when the world has many small and big natural resources of water but because of changes in climate, many of those resources have lost their water or the amount of water in those resources has decreased.
The world need to take immediate steps to reduced the use of water in industries.
Oil and gas industries have taken an initiative in reducing their requirement of water.
It is also important for people to make sure that they are not wasting any water anywhere.
There should also be programs to inform people about the increasing water scarcity and how they should save the water.
It is very important to start special awareness programs about the importance of water, not just big industries but in all the industries, whether they are small or big, because there are very limited industries, which do not require water.

Fendercare Marine Ghana supports two communities with boreholes

Fendercare Marine Ghana supports two communities with boreholes.
Mpohor Dominase (WR), June 21, GNA – Nana Kwampong Aboah II, Krontihen of the Mpohor Traditional area, has expressed concern about the high pollution of water sources in the Mpohor District.
He said the activities of illegal miners in the area has resulted in the pollution of all the water bodies making it very difficult for them to access potable water.
Nana Aboah II said this when Fendercare Marine Ghana Limited in collaboration with Bayfield oil services, handed over two newly installed manual boreholes to the Obrayebona and Dominase communities in the Mpohor District of the Western Region.
Nana Aboah II said in the past they could swim, fish and drink water from the rivers in the area but that the situation has changed and they cannot even get water to drink not to talk of fishing or swimming.
He expressed his gratitude to the two companies for the donation which, he said, would go a long way to help address the water situation in the area.
Nana Aboah II said the two communities would continue to collaborate with Fendercare Marine Ghana in all aspects of the development of the district.
Mr Noah Agbebor, General Manager of Fendercare Marine Ghana, handing over the facilities, said the provision of the boreholes was the company’s Social Corporate Responsibility effort towards the two communities.
He said as part of their corporate responsibility effort the company over the past two months has donated footballs to 24 schools in the Kentan traditional area to promote sporting activities.
He said the structures of the 30 year-old school leaks badly with very weak walls which poses a high risk to the students.

TANZANIA: New Water Project Brings Clean Water to More Than 3,000 Poor and Homeless Youth

TANZANIA: New Water Project Brings Clean Water to More Than 3,000 Poor and Homeless Youth.
(MissionNewswire) Through donor support, Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the international Salesians of Don Bosco, was able to assist Salesian missionaries at the Kinyerezi Children’s Center in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to provide youth access to clean water.
Nearly one-third of the country is arid to semi-arid and people not living near one of the three major lakes that border the country have difficulty accessing water.
According to UNICEF, more than 250,000 children are orphaned yearly by the disease.
Many children who have lost one or both of their parents turn to the streets for survival.
Salesian missionaries operate four Salesian centers in Dar es Salaam that provide education, workforce development programs, health services and assistance to street children.
Many of the center’s structures and programs are still in development, and this clean water project will ensure youth have access to clean water they need.
Once it was completed, youth in the program, as well as those living in the surrounding communities, were able to enjoy clean, fresh water.
This water project in Tanzania and others around the globe ensure communities have the water they need, and children can remain in school focused on their studies.” Almost one third of people in Tanzania live in poverty, according to UNICEF.
While the country has seen some economic growth in tourism, mining, trade and communication, the number of Tanzanians living below the poverty line has marginally increased due to rapid population growth.

Israeli company that produces water from air launches first pilot program in Florida

Israeli company that produces water from air launches first pilot program in Florida.
JTA) — Large parts of Florida are suffering from severe drought, and hurricane season threatens to make things worse.
On Monday, the South Florida city of Miami Gardens announced it was launching a pilot program with the company to address its water problems — the first U.S. city to do so.
“Water Gen’s pilot will enable us to measure its use for clean drinking water if needed for hurricane relief and any other emergency water situation that may arise.” Over the next two weeks, Miami Gardens will use a midsized Water-Gen generator to produce drinking water for its residents.
The company’s largest generator yields as much as 825 gallons of water per day for only 10 cents a gallon, mostly in energy costs, according to the company.
“I congratulate Mayor Gilbert and the City of Miami Gardens for its leadership in allowing for the demonstration of water generation technology that could be a game-changer,” he said Monday.
Water-Gen’s ambitions extend beyond Florida and the United States.
Owned by Russian-Israeli entrepreneur and billionaire Michael Mirilashvili, the vice president of the World Jewish Congress, Water-Gen has Jewish friends in high places.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mentioned it in an interview last December with CBS’s “60 Minutes” about Israel’s high-tech prowess.
“You cannot boycott products that you can’t live without.”

Algae causing taste, odor problems in region’s drinking water

Algae causing taste, odor problems in region’s drinking water.
Ken Ruinard/Independent Mail In parts of Anderson and Pickens counties, the tap water tastes and smells so bad right now that some dogs won’t drink it.
"I feel bad because I didn’t realize at first that she wasn’t drinking what was coming from our sink," Shead said.
So I started giving her bottled water just like we are using.
Shead is one of nearly 200,000 customers in the Upstate whose drinking water is provided by the Anderson Regional Joint Water System.
In the span of 10 days, regional water system officials saw taste- and odor-producing compounds jump to roughly five times the amount they can effectively handle with treatments at the Anderson plant headquarters.
(Photo: Ken Ruinard/Independent Mail) When water system officials do a lake treatment, they have crews sometimes apply a copper-based algaecide on a portion of the lake, then follow that with a hydrogen-peroxide based algaecide around coves and docks.
"We can’t treat algae before we can see it," Willett said.
"We don’t want to do any more to the lake than we have to."
The project will allow regional water system officials to use more advanced oxidation processes when treating the water before it is ready for the tap.

5 Fatal Diseases Caused by Water Pollution

5 Fatal Diseases Caused by Water Pollution.
Drinking clean water is significant to humans, however, its availability in different parts of the world has become a far-fetched goal, reason being the contamination caused due to water pollution.
This may result in diarrhoea, dehydration and sometimes even death.
It is spread due to poor sanitation, intake of contaminated water and unsafe food.
Its symptoms include vomiting, fever, headache, etc., and in critical cases, it can cause seizure, coma or sometimes even death of the person.
Its symptoms involve high fever, stomach pain, headache, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, etc.
In several cases, it is one of the common diseases caused by water pollution and triggered by water-borne bacteria, viruses and protozoans.
Diarrhoea can be prevented by drinking clean water, improving sanitation and washing hands with soap.
In order to reduce the risk of spreading hepatitis, you need to wash hands after using the washroom and try to avoid consuming unsafe food and water.

DNREC, EPA update Delaware residents on water contamination

DNREC, EPA update Delaware residents on water contamination.
“We want to ensure everyone has safe drinking water, we want to ensure that people that are provided water from Artesian [water company] or have private drinking water wells, have safe drinking waters that do not pose a health hazard to them,” said Tim Ratsep, program administrator for DNREC’s site investigation and restoration section.
“We have to do the evaluation, we have to find out where the sources are, we have to get the sources out of there so concentrations don’t increase, and where it has increased to address them so they go in the opposite direction.” Back in 2005, Artesian Water Company, which provides and treats public drinking water, found small levels of contamination in its Hockessin water well during routine sampling.
DNREC then began to evaluate the impacts of the contamination, as well as potential sources of the contamination.
Prolonged exposure to the contaminant can cause adverse human health effects, including neurological disorders and cancer.
“All the Artesian wells have carbon treatment on them, and they meet federal and state safe drinking water standards, and the routine sampling occurs on a regular basis,” Ratsep said.
There were three locations we did find had low level impact material from the facilities and the state put treatment systems on those, so those wells are safe to drink also.” DNREC focused much of its investigation on evaluating dry cleaners in the area, and believe Hockessin Cleaners and Sunrise Cleaners are the main sources of the PCE contamination.
Ratsep said prior to regulations, cleaning materials containing compounds often were dumped outside, contaminating the soil and in turn, the water.
The EPA also updated the public on its investigation of the Hockessin Ground Water Plume Site, which it began last year.
If the site is put on the NPL, there will be several weeks of public information and comment sessions.
