Three Reasons Families Need Healthy Rivers
June is National Rivers Month – a great time to celebrate the rivers and streams flowing through our communities and think about the importance of healthy rivers to our families.
They give us our drinking water.
There are few things more fundamental to the health of our families than clean drinking water.
Let’s use National Rivers Month as a chance to highlight the importance of healthy rivers for all children, and let our members of Congress know that clean water must be a top priority for all Americans.
Your kids need clean drinking water.
Rivers flow through our veins.
As our kids grow up, we want to know that the water flowing from our taps is clean and safe.
Too many communities in our country (it’s not just Flint) do not have access to safe drinking water.
Imagine if our decision makers and members of Congress understood our bodies – their own bodies – as directly connected to the health of rivers and the natural world.

Villages in Salem reel under severe water shortage
A majority of the hamlets in all the village panchayats in the district have been provided with public water taps for supplying potable drinking water through different comprehensive drinking water schemes.
However, the irony is that water is not being supplied through these public taps even once a week, lament a cross section of the villagers.
While Pottammal, a daily wage earner of Ammapettai, says that she has to walk for a long distance for getting a pot of drinking water, Raja, running a brick kiln, says that he and other villagers have been purchasing water for both the kiln and drinking and other purposes.
“We are hiring tankers to procure water from Karipatti village situated about 10 km away,” says Raja.
A 2,000 litre tanks costs Rs.
500 and 1,000 litres Rs.
A cross section of the people of Vettaikaranur in Athanurpatti village panchayat, all daily wagers, complained that they were getting water for about 10 minutes once in a fortnight in the public taps.
What is more disturbing is that the people do not know when they will get water in public taps.
The residents of various villages surrounding Belur visit the town in two-wheelers to fetch drinking water.
This reservoir too has become totally dry, leading to ground water level going down alarmingly.
Why Safe Drinking Water Should Be At The Centre Of Public Health Policy In India
Why Safe Drinking Water Should Be At The Centre Of Public Health Policy In India.
In urban areas, the problem of poor drinking water and hygiene is only going to increase due to fast urbanisation and pollution.
This is ₹52 crore less than the annual budget of the Union Health Ministry and more than the annual budget of the Education Ministry.
Subsequently, the National Water Policies of 1987, 2002 and 2012 highlighted the concerns of clean drinking water.
Further, these programmes were implemented by the Department of Drinking Water Supply under the Ministry of Rural Development.
This highlights an important issue of the lack of understanding of safe drinking water as a vital component of public health.
Safe drinking water as a public health component Drinking water and sanitation form a major component of population-wide preventive services.
The WHO has documented 37 diseases as the major causes of death in developing countries, of which 21 are associated with water and sanitation.
After 67 years of independence, in 2014, India launched its first mission mode programme to address the issue of sanitation.
For implementing all these measures, it is first imperative to view lack of safe drinking water as a public health concern.

Alabama has second-most sites with PFC-contaminated drinking water in U.S.: Study
Alabama has second-most sites with PFC-contaminated drinking water in U.S.: Study.
Alabama is tied with New Hampshire for having the second-highest number of sites where the drinking water supply is contaminated with a certain type of toxic chemical, according to a new study.
Though the federal government does not regulate the appearance of highly fluorinated toxic chemicals known as PFCs or PFASs in drinking water, the chemicals are linked to a range of maladies including cancer and thyroid disease.
And they were found in the drinking supply at five sites in northern Alabama, according to the research study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and Northeastern University, which was released Thursday.
"New Jersey has the most known contamination sites with six, followed by Alabama and New Hampshire with five each and New York with four," the EWG, a national advocacy group, wrote in a statement.
"At many of the sites, contamination levels are extremely high."
David Andrews, senior scientist at the EWG, said the fact that Alabama ranks so high on the list is "is partially due to the presence of a large manufacturing facility in the state," a reference to the 3M Co manufacturing facility in Decatur, WBHM reported.
Contaminated water sites were also reported in Etowah County and Fort Payne, according to the study.
Livonia residents urged to boil water; Farmington Hills advisory canceled
Residents in Livonia and in parts of Farmington Hills are being urged to boil their water after different system failures on Saturday.
Here’s what you need to know if you live in Livonia: Residents are being urged to boil their water before using it after the Livonia water system lost pressure.
Officials said to bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute and let it cool before using, or to use bottled water.
Here’s what you need to know if you live in Farmington Hills: UPDATE: The advisory in Farmington Hills has been canceled.
A precautionary boil water notice has been issued Saturday for the Southwest Pressure District in Farmington Hills because of a power failure at one of the Great Lakes Water Authority booster stations.
Officials said this notice only affects customers in the Southwest Pressure District.
A map showing the general area is below (click to expand): Officials said whenever a water system loses pressure, there is a potential for pollutants to enter the system.
No actual contamination has been detected within the water system at this time, but as a precautionary measure, all water customers in the affected area are being advised by officials to boil all water used for drinking and cooking.
Officials said an alternative is to use bottled water for drinking and cooking.
The area will be flushed and sampled on Saturday and Sunday, officials said.
EDITORIAL: Battle of the Highlands rages on
EDITORIAL: Battle of the Highlands rages on.
We applaud the effort.
New Jersey has a fight on its hands to protect our environment, and we need help from all available fronts.
The state Department of Environmental Protection has adopted a new rule change allowing for more septic tanks in the Highlands, an area of nearly 900,000 acres in which development was significantly restricted under the Highlands Act, enacted in 2004.
The rule change, however, would mean more new construction as well as an estimated 12 percent increase in septic tanks prone to leaking nitrates, a prime source of water pollution.
Protecting clean water is among the fundamental green initiatives in which Gov.
President Trump similarly disdains the environment.
The state Assembly last week fired off a needed shot, therefore, approving a resolution declaring that the new septic density rules are inconsistent with legislative intent.
Christie has sought to weaken Highlands protections throughout his tenure, packing the Highlands Commission that oversees development in the region with more anti-environment allies to do his bidding.
No mechanism was ever put in place to provide that compensation, and attempts to deliver on that pledge, including a proposed water tax, have gotten nowhere.
