On California, the drought and the ‘yuck factor’

On California, the drought and the ‘yuck factor’.
David Sedlak: Our water systems bring water into our cities from great distances, and that means we need lots of infrastructure—dams, reservoirs, treatment plants and pipes.
Are these water recycling systems already being used in the state?
There are several of these advanced treatment plants in California.
It’s likely they’ll have a potable recycling project up and running in the coming decade.
The constructed wetlands that we’ve spent the most time studying is a system in Riverside County on the Santa Ana River called the Prado Wetlands.
We’re currently in the process of conducting experiments in support of several different types of wetland treatment systems that are being considered in the Bay Area.
Will climate change affect the country’s water supply?
But the problem is the kinds of solutions that are needed to deal with the drought often require a long time to build, so it’s hard to build a new water supply over night.
But very few people currently own them in California.

What I’m happy to see is the state of California is using the drought as a reason to think about the future.
But very few people currently own them in California.

Ltd after an inspection team found deficiencies in their units.
They have also been asked to comply with the observations and findings of the inspection team within three months.
"Subject to the applicant’s depositing the environmental compensation to the Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board (RSPCB) and the further undertaking to the tribunal, we permit these industries to operate, but in the event of default, the industries would be liable to be shut down and would also be liable to pay further environmental compensation for polluting the environment in the past and in the current period," the bench said.
It also ordered Agrawal Metal Works Pvt Ltd and Shyam Auto Pvt Ltd to obtain permission from the Central Ground Water Authority for extraction of ground water and asked it to install rain water harvesting system for replacing of the depletion caused by extraction of water.
It had said that the state has failed to take any strict legal action against the industries that are discharging the waste and untreated waste industrial effluents in the water.

Plea in NGT against polluting jeans dyeing units in Delhi

Plea in NGT against polluting jeans dyeing units in Delhi.
A plea was on Friday filed in the National Green Tribunal highlighting release of poisonous substances into ground water from polluting jeans dyeing units in northeast Delhi’s Karawal Nagar.
The plea filed by a Delhi resident contended that many dyeing units were operating in the area without requisite permission.
It said that untreated effluents are contaminating groundwater, which is the main source of drinking water in the area and causing severe diseases like cancer.
Karawal Nagar resident Subhash Chand alleged that these mushrooming jeans dyeing units are affecting the ground water adversely and taking a toll on their health.
A vacation bench of Justice R S Rathore and Expert Member S S Garbyal posted the matter for hearing on July 4.
Besides the Environment Ministry and the Delhi government, the plea has made nine persons, who run dyeing units, as parties in the case and said that they were using dangerous chemicals, which seep through drains and cause water pollution in the area.
“Direct the respondents to take action including closure and shifting of the units in question situated in Panchal Vihar, Delhi if it is found that water, noise and air pollution is being carried from their premises,” the plea said.

PM calls for better Water Management

That Malaysia is blessed with abundant water sources is well known. So is the fact that many of those water sources are badly polluted and poorly treated. But it’s good to know that the country’s politician are aware of this and want to do something about it, including Prime Minister Najib Razak. “Malaysia is blessed with plenty of water supply sources but we face a shortage due to global climate change and river pollution,” the prime minister said, according to the New Straits Times newspaper. “Commitment from all quarters is necessary to completely treat all kinds of effluent and industrial waste to protect our sources of clean water supply,” he added. “The three main causes of river pollution identified include agricultural and…

Unfazed by censure, Maharashtra’s polluting factories make its rivers filthiest in India

For the last 15 years, Parkar has been campaigning against river pollution in the area, engaging with the officials of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) as well as the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) which maintains the belt.
Of the 156 locations where the CPCB has set up its monitoring units on the 49 rivers and tributaries in the state, 153 do not meet the water quality criteria, according to the CPCB.
Pune attracted 45% of the notices (2,392 of 5,276) issued to polluting factories between 2011 and 2016.
These regions, along with Navi Mumbai, are among the top six in the list of regions served the most notices by the MPCB.
In Kolhapur, which has the second-highest number of defaulting factories, 64% of red-category notices were issued to medium and small-scale units.
One malfunctioning effluent plant can raise pollution levels down an entire belt The lax monitoring of and prosecution for water pollution in the state means that Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) routinely flout environmental guidelines on discharging untreated effluents into rivers.
As Boralkar pointed out, medium and small-scale industries depend on common plants for the mandatory treatment of their chemical waste.
Currently, Maharashtra has 24 CETPs; five more are set to come up.
Three years before that, in 2013, the level of pollutants in treated effluent was found to be “dangerously high” at three CETPs in Pune.
He doesn’t think much of the MPCB issuing 5,000-odd notices to erring industrial units in five years.

Faster, easier way to test water quality

Despite the country’s water scarcity, waste water pumped into the rivers and dams is often not clean enough, polluting this increasingly scarce resource.
According to the latest Green Drop Report, which measures the health of the country’s waste water infrastructure, more than 80% of SA’s waste-water treatment facilities are not functioning properly.
Only 135 of the 824 waste-water treatment facilities are functioning well.
This means that human effluent and waste are entering the country’s water systems, threatening the health and livelihood of people who depend on rivers and dams for potable water or for irrigation.
Testing water for pathogens such as E Coli is difficult.
The CSIR’s rapid test, known as ColiSpot, can test for E Coli within a day, says Klariska Moodley, a senior research engineer and project manager at the CSIR.
The ColiSpot system consists of a flow test, which is similar to a home pregnancy test, a filter and incubation gear, which includes an oven and nutrients to grow bacteria.
After six hours, you can test for the presence of E Coli, says Moodley.
She says results for municipal Blue Drop, or potable water quality, and Green Drop (sewerage outflow water quality) are falling across the country.
"We aim to keep the cost of the test below R50 a sample, but when large-scale manufacturing is taken into account, this price could be further reduced," Moodley says.
