Improving hydropower through long-range drought forecasts
Changing climatic conditions pose extra challenges for hydropower plant operators.
This allows reliable predictions of water scarcity over a period of up to three weeks.
Massimiliano Zappa of WSL, who heads the project, explains the advantage of such forecasts: "With climate change, dry spells will become more frequent and intensive, and will last longer."
This information is particularly useful for operators of reservoir power stations.
"But up to now, forecasts have generally not been made over such long periods because of the high complexity and enormous amounts of data," says Zappa.
Drought is easier to predict than precipitation, which can only be reliably forecasted up to five days at most.
Previously, Switzerland had no system capable of monitoring these local variables efficiently.
Making optimal use of available water Long-range forecasts of inflow and outflow in the catchment areas of hydropower stations can be combined with predictions of price developments on the energy market to optimise operation and profitability.
This is very important for the hydropower industry, which has come under pressure," says Frédéric Jordan, CEO of Hydrique Ingéniers, the industrial partner responsible for the economic calculations.
It is in society’s interest that hydropower plants be able to predict the availability of water and convert the stored water into electricity when market demand is high.

Ireland’s drought could be over: showers forecast for Wednesday
Irish Water warns new restrictions may still be needed unless usage drops The drought could be over, according to Met Éireann, which has forecast scattered showers across the country by the end of the week, after more than 20 days without significant rain.
Met Éireann says that cloud will thicken on Tuesday evening and that by Wednesday showers will spread across the northern half of the island, which will have top temperatures of 17 to 20 degrees in the coming days.
Over Munster and south Leinster top temperatures will reach 21 to 23 degrees.
Winds will be light northeasterly and moderate near coasts.
Top temperatures of 22 to 25 degrees, but slightly cooler in the north and northwest with highs of 18 to 21 degrees.
Temperatures will reach 18 to 23 degrees in light northerly or variable breezes.
Temperatures are forecast to reach 24 degrees on Saturday, which is likely to start mostly dry, with sunny spells or hazy sunshine; cloud will increase from the west, with scattered showers spreading eastwards later and overnight.
Winds will become light to moderate southwest to westerly.
Sunday will be somewhat cloudier, with outbreaks of showery rain in light to moderate southwesterly winds.
In Dublin the UV index will be high on Tuesday, so protection against direct sunshine should be worn.
How to handle drought conditions as more dry weather is forecast
Rainfall in most of the country is well below normal levels, according to Met Eireann, and Teagasc is advising farmers to manage drought conditions by holding rotation lengths.
Apart from the northwest, where rainfall was slightly above average, country rainfall figures remained well below normal with totals ranging from just 3 to 10mm, figures from Met Eireann show.
A lot of dry weather is set to develop everywhere from Wednesday out to the foreseeable future as high pressure builds.
Wednesday through to Friday will bring around average values and no more, with northerly breezes streaming down across Ireland (best values further south).
However, the trend is for warmer weather to set in as of the weekend with values climbing into the low 20s widely both Saturday and Sunday and possibly even higher into next week as it become locally very warm, that’s as southwest breezes take hold.
And, according to Teagasc, some farms are starting to experience drought conditions.
It says that grass growth rates have declined and advises farmers that it is essential to hold rotation length at 20 days e.g. if platform is 100 acres (40ha), graze 5 acres (2 ha) per day.
It also says to fill the feed gap with concentrates first (up to 6kg/cow/day) and silage thereafter and avoid running down farm cover by holding rotation length and entering the correct pre-grazing covers.
UK weather sparks DROUGHT fears as reservoirs dry up and three-month heatwave with 33C World Cup forecast
BackGrid Alamy However, the current high temperatures and unseasonal lack of rainfall has already started becoming a cause for concern in parts of the country, with parts of the Lake District already drying up.
The Weather Company predicted temperatures would soar to 33C from late June, making the summer the hottest since 2006.
There is double the usual probability of this summer having a higher temperature than 2013’s 15.17C – which would make 2018 the warmest summer since 2006 – the hottest summer for a century.
Britain is set to wilt due to high pressure, which brings hot and dry conditions, the Met Office said.
Last year saw grim school holidays spoil summer, summer 2014 was ruined by rain following ex-Hurricane Bertha, and 2012 had the wettest summer for 100 years.
Pacemaker Press Alamy Live News Alamy Live News The Met Office June-August forecast said: “For June-August, above-average temperatures are more likely than below-average temperatures.
“The probability the UK average temperature for June-August will fall into the warmest of our five categories is 40 percent.
“The June to August period only needs to be 1C above average for it to happen.” Leon Brown, head of meteorological operations at The Weather Channel, owned by The Weather Company, said: “33C is expected by early July as heat from high pressure over Britain builds.” Met Office forecaster Helen Roberts said: “There’s plenty of sunshine to come this week, with the South generally fine through the week, although the North-West will be changeable from Wednesday.
Temperatures are likely to be warmer than average, with the possibility of very warm or hot spells.” We pay for your stories!

New research points out that climate change will increase fire activity in Mediterranean Europe
New research points out that climate change will increase fire activity in Mediterranean Europe.
A recent study published in Scientific Reports, led by researchers of the University of Barcelona in collaboration with several other research institutions, shows that the direct effect of climate change in regulating fuel moisture (droughts leading to larger fires) is expected to be dominant, regarding the indirect effect of antecedent climate on fuel load and structure -that is, warmer/drier conditions that determine fuel availability.
For instance, the direct effect of climate change in regulating fuel moisture could be counterbalanced by the indirect effects on fuel structure.
In addition, the drought-fire relationship is stronger in northern regions," says Marco Turco, researcher at the Meteorological Hazard Analysis Group (GAMA) of UB, led by Professor M. del Carme Llasat.
Thus, in the forthcoming decades, and especially in northern Mediterranean regions, the direct effect of climate change is expected to be more dominant, regarding the indirect effect of the previous climate.
In the past few decades, the measured trend of the burned area in Mediterranean Europe has been generally negative, while drought conditions have been increasing.
However, keeping fire management actions at the current level might not be enough to balance a future increase in droughts.
Finally, the ability to model the link between drought and forest fires is crucial to identify key actions in adaptation strategies.
Also, according to the researchers, seasonal climate forecasts enable a more effective and dynamic adaptation to climate variability and change, offering an underexploited opportunity to reduce the fire impact of adverse climate conditions.
