Rostraver Township boil water advisory lifted after completion of tests
Rostraver Township boil water advisory lifted after completion of tests.
WESTMORELAND COUNTY, Pa. – A boil water advisory that affected dozens of people in Rostraver Township was lifted Sunday, the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County announced.
The precautionary boil water advisory was issued Thursday night for certain areas in the township.
About 65 customers were without running water or had very low water pressure.
The Municipal Authority said the advisory was issued for State Route 51, Smith Road, Lynn Road, Port Royal Road, West McClain Road and Timms Road because of a 16-inch water main break that caused a loss of positive water pressure.
Although not in the affected area, the Belle Vernon School District cancelled classes Friday as a precaution.
After two days of negative bacterial tests, officials determined that the water is safe to drink.
“Water service was restored Feb. 17, but DEP policy mandates two negative bacterial test results in two days before lifting the precautionary advisory.
The second test was received Sunday morning.
Both were negative for bacteriological contaminants,” the authority said in a statement Sunday.

WESTMORELAND COUNTY, Pa. – Dozens of people in Rostraver Township are without running water while others are under a boil advisory.
The authority said the broken water main was under repair Friday and repairs were expected to be complete by Friday evening.
As a result, there is an increased chance that the water may contain disease-causing organisms,” the authority said in a statement.
Anyone under the advisory should bring all water to a boil, allow it to bubble for one minute and then cool before using.
Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice.
The authority said inadequately treated water may contain disease-causing organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites, which can cause symptoms like nausea, cramps, diarrhea and associated headaches.
General guidelines on how to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

Updated 46 minutes ago The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County issued an alert Thursday advising customers in areas of Rostraver Township to boil their water before drinking it.
The authority said there is an increased chance it may contain disease-causing organisms.
The alert applies to customers on Route 51 and Smith, Lynn, Port Royal, West McClain and Timms roads.
The Belle Vernon Area School District announced on its Twitter page that it has cancelled school Friday because of the boil-water advisory.
The authority said it may take up to 12 hours to repair the water main.
According to the alert posted on the authority website, a break in a 16-inch water main resulted in loss of positive water pressure, which could allow contamination to enter the water system through back flow.
Customers in the affected area are advised to bring water to a rolling boil for one minute before drinking it or using it for washing dishes, brushing teeth or food preparation.
