Farming activity contaminates water despite best practices
Farming activity contaminates water despite best practices.
CASCO, Wis. – Lynda Cochart did not realize her water was contaminated with coliform bacteria until she contracted MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant skin infection.
Cochart lives between two dairy farms with over 1,000 cows each.
None of the bacteria Borchardt found came from human feces, she said, so the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus most likely came from cow manure.
Many farmworkers who live in these communities still have to pay for the contaminated water coming from the faucet, as well as buying bottled water to drink.
“They contaminate our water, and we, the poor, are paying for water as if we were rich.
But we are paying the price of contaminated water.” The News21 analysis shows that the drinking water of millions of Americans living in or near farming communities across the country is contaminated by dangerous amounts of nitrates and coliform bacteria from fertilizer and manure widely used in agriculture.
A 2012 University of California, Davis, study attributed high nitrate levels in the San Joaquin Valley groundwater to crop and animal agriculture activities based on an analysis of land use and the amount of nitrogen entering the water.
Farmers’ heavy use of fertilizers and manure on their crops account for most of the nitrate found in the studied area.
An Iowa Geological Survey researcher found in 2004 that row crops, such as corn, cotton and soybeans, contributed the most to high nitrate levels in Iowa’s rivers.
Offaly Farmers Asked To Remain Vigilant For Water Pollution
Inland Fisheries Ireland has issued an appeal to farmers in Offaly to remain vigilant during the summer months when harvesting silage and spreading slurry to avoid water pollution and the loss of nutrients to water.
The eight fish kills caused by agricultural practises in 2016 occurred in Meath (x 1), Kilkenny (x 1), Cork (x 3), Kerry (x 1), Sligo (x 1) and Galway (x 1).
In four instances, the exact cause of the fish kill was difficult to ascertain while 16 incidents of fish kills were as a result of disease and natural causes.
As agriculture was the largest identifiable and avoidable attributing factor to fish kills last year, farmers in Offaly are reminded of the importance of managing their silage operations correctly.
Silage effluent is a significant polluting substance, starving fish and invertebrate life of oxygen, resulting in potentially massive fish kills if it enters a watercourse.
With some rivers low during summertime with little dilution capacity, the effect of a small leak can cause huge damage.
Inland Fisheries Ireland is advising farmers in Offaly to follow its simple six point plan to ensure good farmyard management and reduce their risk of polluting: Use round bales as the most environmentally friendly way to store silage.
If a silage pit is being used, ensure it is properly sealed to prevent leakage from under the slab.
Never spread slurry close to a watercourse, be aware of the slope of land to the watercourse.

EPA’s Latest Water Attack: Protecting Polluting Power Plants
EPA’s Latest Water Attack: Protecting Polluting Power Plants.
I wish this formula was an exaggeration, but the examples are piling up so fast, I don’t think it is.
Today’s example is Administrator Pruitt’s plan to indefinitely postpone limits adopted in 2015 on the toxic pollution that electric power plants can discharge into waterways.
As our friends at Earthjustice explain, these facilities dump enormous amounts of very dangerous stuff into waters, putting people who drink contaminated water or eat fish from these water bodies at risk of a host of health problems, including loss of IQ and cancer.
EPA held a public hearing on its delay proposal today.
Our supporters swim and boat in, fish from, and get drinking water that flows through, waterways at risk of pollution from toxic power plant discharges.
Consequently, the agency’s push to delay compliance lacks any reasonable basis.
Because of these serious threats, controlling power plants’ toxic pollution creates significant benefits.
EPA estimated the benefits of the standards would have been as much as $566 million a year, compared to $480 million in costs, and the agency only monetized 13 out of 24 categories of benefits that it identified the rule would have.
Please abandon it immediately.
E. coli in Artesia water ‘no surprise’ state expert says
There is no law that requires cities disinfect their water, Stringer said.
"We need to consider disinfecting," he said of Artesia’s water system.
Artesia does not have a disinfectant system.
Even if the city does submit two clean samples to NMED, processed in a state-licensed lab in Hobbs, Yurdin said the state will continue to monitor Artesia’s system more than before.
The discovery of E. coli triggered a required state assessment of the city water system within 30 days, Stringer said.
He said Artesia’s E. coli problem is a top priority for his division that oversee water systems as small as trailer parks or as large at the city of Albuquerque.
Artesia’s water has now been known to contain the potentially life-threatening bacteria for about six days since a boil water alert was put into effect on June 15.
The three positive samples were in areas subjected to chlorine flushing Tuesday night, read a news release from the City of Artesia.
Flushing of city water lines will continue through Thursday with the city turning on fire hydrants.
Officials hope that by flushing the lines, contaminated water will exit the system and clean water will be able to flow.
Polluted groundwater pushes city to draft well ordinance
“During the operation of that company,” a memo on the subject reads, “certain pollutants entered the water table.” According to discussion during the July 10 meeting of the Tullahoma Board of Mayor and Aldermen, operations during the 1970s to 1980s led to the leaking of a popular dry-cleaning solvent — tetrachloroethene (PCE) — in the groundwater underneath the site.
The City of Tullahoma is in the process of implementing an ordinance that monitors the construction of wells in the southeastern part of the city, due to a groundwater pollution issue stemming from the operation of the Mid-South Uniform Service, formerly located on South Anderson Street.
“According to Jim, the local company spent something like $800,000 working on the site doing engineering and remediation,” said Baltz.
Well ordinance One of the recommendations to the company from TDEC, said Baltz, was that the company approach the city with the idea of an ordinance that monitors the installation of private wells in the affected area.
Baltz said that since early April the city has been working with TDEC officials on just what the ordinance needs to contain.
“Basically, what we do is by instituting this, when people want to put in a well in that area, then they’ll have to go through a process,” said Baltz.
“What we’re trying to do is just identify when people are trying to do that activity,” he added.
That way, he said, when people wish to dig wells in the area affected by the polluted water, the city will be able to coordinate with TDEC officials on their recommendation for the well.
Additionally, it sets up an appeal process should the city be in a position to deny an applicant.
Since the pollutants are still in the groundwater, Jackson said that his team and state officials with TDEC believed the best way to handle the affected area would be to minimize exposure to the contaminated water.
Summer research on using biologically-inspired models to fight water pollution
Summer research on using biologically-inspired models to fight water pollution.
The opportunity to participate in summer research as a freshman was incredible.
This research gave me my first real glance into how the scientific community really works.
In my project I was working with both Hampden-Sydney and Virginia Tech professors to create a bioinspired, 3D printed prototype that would collect trash in rivers.
The results of this work will be integrated into a National Science Foundation proposal that would enable undergraduates from across the nation to engage in projects that combine techniques in biology and engineering to ethically solve world challenges like water pollution.
During this project I stepped out of my comfort zone and developed valuable insight into many aspects of professional science that I was unaware of.
I learned how to communicate with professors from different institutions to effectively accomplish a goal, write and submit research protocol, learn and master new technology, obtain permission to use live animals in an experiment, and how to correctly address adversity in a professional manner.
This research has taught me that I have the ability to think big and also possess the practical means that will allow me to reach any goal I set.
The lessons and skills that I’ve developed this summer will be extraordinarily beneficial on my path to medical school and into the world beyond.

Great Neck Water Pollution Control District pursues improved services and lower costs
Great Neck’s Water Pollution Control District may be a public entity, but its officials say that over the last few years, they’ve operated a bit differently.
They had a 40 percent increase to their service area in 2013, added 24 miles of sewer lines to manage and nearly doubled its number of force mains, which use pressure to move wastewater.
Between its old service area, the Village of Great Neck and additional services provided to entities like North Shore University Hospital, the Great Neck Park District and Merchant Marine Academy, the Great Neck Water Pollution Control District serves over 25,000 people.
But rather than increase costs, officials said, that investments in technology and initiatives are lowering taxpayer costs while providing more bang for the buck.
Currently, officials estimate that yearly savings will amount to $2,747,000.
“These numbers, for the most part, are conservative numbers,” said Jerry Landsberg, chairman and commissioner of the Great Neck Water Pollution Control District.
And unlike many other sewer districts, the water pollution control district does in-house repairs of pipes and manholes.
“We’re the only place in New York that does it,” Murphy said.
They have since generated about a quarter of their electricity, 80 percent of its heat and saved the district nearly $300,000 over their two years of operation.
“They don’t have anywhere to take it,” Murphy said, noting that the nearest stations are in New Jersey and eastern Suffolk County.
