Everglades flooding risk could send more water pollution to Lake Okeechobee – Sun Sentinel

Everglades flooding risk could send more water pollution to Lake Okeechobee – Sun Sentinel.
At the start of the summer rainy season, western Broward and Miami-Dade counties are already filling up with too much water too fast.
That has triggered extra pumping to save swamped wildlife and to also head off future risks for western communities.
The emergency pumping is moving water north through Palm Beach County and into Lake Okeechobee — the opposite direction that South Florida’s water supply is supposed to flow.
To send more water south — where it once naturally flowed — the state is asking for federal permission to pump water into drier portions of Everglades National Park and then out into Florida Bay.
“It’s an emergency in the Everglades,” said Ron Bergeron, commissioner for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
“If we don’t pull this trigger, there may be nothing left to save.” Heavy rains this month have boosted water levels about 2 to 3 feet higher than usual in portions of the Everglades that stretch through western Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
To avoid draining more water into western Broward, the state for the first time is pumping water from a reservoir in southwestern Palm Beach County north into Lake Okeechobee.
When the lake rises, its water gets drained to the east and west — spreading pollution threats to coastal waters.
That lake draining can fuel toxic algae blooms that make coastal waterways unsafe for fishing and swimming.

Delicious-looking popsicles are made from polluted water

Murky brown water in the drain and flooded areas during monsoon season remind you of teh or Thai tea?
It is the brainchild of three Taiwanese design students — Hung I-chen, Guo Yi-hui, and Cheng Yu-ti — from the National Taiwan University of Arts.
They collected water from 100 different water sources in Taiwan and “froze” them into beautiful popsicles using transparent polyester resin.
Caption translation: Passing by milk-looking drain water this morning Obviously, no one seriously put them in their mouths, but these popsicles sure won’t taste as good as they look.
About 90 percent of the trash found in the water sources were plastic that might come in the forms of bottle cap, plastic bags, bottles and chopstick wrappers.
If you take a closer look, the popsicle on the most right has a toothbrush head in it.
Many of these plastic items are also common pollutants found in Singapore waters, which become more troubling given the returning of wildlife like otters to Singapore’s hybrid ecosystem.
Unlike typical campaigns that stuff images of unsightly littered waters in your faces, this project raises awareness about water pollution by turning polluted water into beautiful popsicles.
Because if these popsicles are not going to cut it with you, what makes you think it will cut it with animals?

Water Quality in Libya: A Country’s Most Precious Resource

As a primarily desert country, Libya is a place where clean water is one of the most valuable commodities, used for agricultural production and human consumption.
Rising sea levels and increased oil drilling have particularly plagued Libya and exposed its already limited and crucial water supply to pollutants and contamination.
The only geographic area to receive more than 100 millimeters of rainfall a year is the coastal region, which accounts for less than 5 percent of Libya’s land area.
The slow move inward has caused a dramatic increase in the salinity of groundwater found in natural aquifers, from 150 parts per million in 1950 to 1,000 parts per million in 1990, according to Rajab M El-Asswad, a professor at Al-Fateh University Tripoli.
As a direct consequence, the amount of water available and the water quality in Libya is becoming increasingly stretched.
In addition to limiting the amount of water that can be accessed, the increased salinity of seawater has made the overall process of obtaining water in Libya more expensive due to the need for desalination.
Coinciding with the water pollution seen from natural causes like rising sea levels, man-made activities like oil drilling also creates pollution.
The increase in standard drilling procedures and techniques such as fracking have exposed the vast natural aquifers to contaminants and chemicals, another negative effect on the water quality in Libya.
The issue of water pollution in Libya has devastating effects on the country’s people and ecosystems and is a cause deserving of increased foreign aid.

The Largest Source of Toxic Water Pollution | Dive Into Democracy

Every year, over 2 billion pounds of toxic wastewater is dumped into our waterways by power plants – the largest source of toxic water pollution in our country.
Approximately 23,000 miles of rivers and streams in the United States are contaminated because of this pollution, including many drinking water sources.
In 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finally issued a regulation that addressed this massive source of unregulated pollution: the Effluent Limitation Guidelines and Standards for Steam Electric Power Plants, often referred to as the “ELG rule.” This rule requires power generators to stop discharging many of these toxics into our waterways.
We have provided a comment template below that you can use, but please consider personalizing it and explaining why getting toxic pollutants out of our waterways and drinking water sources is so important to you!
Postponing and rewriting this rule will delay long needed reductions in toxic pollution to drinking water sources for communities and waterways around the country.
This delay in creating meaningful limitations on toxic pollutants are the reason why coal-fired power plants are now the largest source of toxic water pollution in the country.
These toxic pollutants harm communities around the country and the ELG rule is a very feasible plan to drastically reduce this harm.
Rolling back the ELG rule will not make the costs associated with these pollutants disappear – it will just push costs from the power plant companies onto the public.
Communities will continue to have their sources of drinking water contaminated.
I urge you to reconsider this action and allow the long-awaited and very necessary ELG rule to be fully implemented under the schedule set forth in the ELG Rule.

Burmese roofed turtle threatened by water pollution

Burmese roofed turtle threatened by water pollution.
The Burmese roofed turtle is an endangered endemic species known only to live in the Ayeyawady, Chindwin, Sitaung, and lower Thanlwin rivers, where it was historically reported to be common.
Flooding of the upper Chindwin River, where these roofed turtles live, filled the river with waste water.
Some aquatic animals were killed by the water pollution.
Moreover, beaches where roofed turtle usually lay eggs were flooded, which may affect the ability of turtles to reproduce.
“As there was flooding and heavy pollution in the river, the turtles are not able to breathe.
The water is filled with garbage, so there is less oxygen for them to breathe.
I have informed villages along the Chindwin River to let me know if they find any dead turtles,” said Myo Min Win.
Roofed turtles were thought to have gone extinct in Myanmar until 2001, when they were discovered near Linphar village in Htamathi sanctuary, on the upper Chindwin River.
Today, there are about 800 roofed turtles in Myanmar.

HT impact: Why aren’t you using funds to clean up Maharashtra, NHRC asks anti-pollution board

Mumbai city news: While the MPCB has funds at its disposal, Mumbai continues to face overflowing dumping grounds, increasing air, noise and water pollution Taking note of HT’s May 14 report, the National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) asked Maharashtra’s pollution monitoring agency to explain why it hasn’t used 80% of the funds allotted to bring pollution under control in 2015-17.
In 2015-16, the MPCB received Rs393.8 crore, but spent only Rs68.26 crore.
In 2016-17, of the Rs350 crore received, only Rs80 crore was spent.
For 2017-18, the department has set a budget of Rs150 crore.
The NHRC directed the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) to file a report within three months.
For instance, the MPCB has 10 laboratories to record pollution levels and test water samples, of which only five are authorised by the Union environment ministry under the Environment Protection Act, 1986.
The official said the probe needs to be carried out keeping in mind the effects of air, water and noise pollution and the impact on citizens as under the Human Rights Act, 1993.
“As the grievances are subject of the state, we see it fit that MSHRC drafts a complete report in accordance with the provisions of the act and highlight the remedial measures as well,” he said, adding the NHRC will monitor the status of the action taken.
“It will take us some time to collate documents and understand the issues.
However, we will take action according to the NHRC directive,” said Justice SR Bannurmath, chairperson, MSHRC.

Water pollution: Tonnes of fish die in Pedda Cheruvu

The fishermen folk were also suffering skin diseases due to chemical contaminated water, Fishermen Cooperative Society president Pappu Ramesh said.
Open Yadadri-Bhongir: Over 10 tonnes of fish died in Pedda Cheruvu of Indrapalangaram village of Ramannapet mandal in the district due to chemical contaminated water from Musi River that reached the village tank on Sunday.
Pedda Chervu is one of the tanks in the district which is being filled with water from Musi river.
The Musi water which was contaminated with chemicals turned fatal to the fish that were being grown in Pedda Chervu.
This would affect the livelihood of 500 fishermen families in the area.
On Sunday, a huge number of dead fish started floating on the waters of Pedda Chervu.
Speaking to ‘Telangana Today’, Fishermen Cooperative Society president Pappu Ramesh deplored that they had alerted the officials of the Irrigation Department not to release the water to village tanks during the rains as the problem arise during the monsoon season.
But there was no response from the officials to their request.
He said that the nets set up by fishermen in Pedda Cheruvu for fishing was also damaged due to chemicals.
“About 6-7 lakh of fish seeds were released in Pedda Cheruvu as a part of a special drive taken up by the State government, but did not grow up properly due to the contaminated water”, he said.
