Terrible odor possibly identified in north Warren, but source is not

Tribune Chronicle / R. Michael Semple Mark Tilton, left, and his stepdaughter, Sierra Angell, sit on the front steps of their Comstock Avenue NW home and talk about the terrible smell that has permeated the neighborhood for weeks.
The Warren Water Pollution Control Department thinks it knows what is causing the odor but is trying to identify the source.
Carolyn Angell described being nearly driven from her home at 415 Comstock Ave. NW after spending days smelling what seemed to be “a combination of rotten food, spoiled milk and something that had been dead for a couple weeks.
Besides the foul nature of the odor, Angell expressed concern that it may trigger her asthma and COPD.
Daquan Mansfield and Cynthia Ritchey, who with their two children live at 575 Belmont St. NW, described smelling something similar to rotten corn and gas in their basement for about a month.
“The smell comes and goes at different times of the day,” Mansfield said.
Warren Deputy Health Commissioner Robert Pinti said the health department received calls from about 10 different residents over the past two weeks.
“We believe it is dimethyl disulfide, which is a small molecule with a big odor.” Although department employees believe they know the cause of the big stink, Wilke said the goal now is to identify its source.
“We are tracking where we are getting complaints and going into the areas to determine whether they are the same odors and taking samples.” The department also has been going to local businesses to check their sewer discharges.
“As far as I know dimethyl disulfide is not harmful to humans, but it does not mean the foul smell is not a nuisance.” rsmith@tribtoday.com

These 100 popsicles are made with trash- and sewage-filled water

These 100 popsicles are made with trash- and sewage-filled water.
The Polluted Water Popsicles project is meant to shock viewers into realizing how serious water contamination is in Taiwan.
Three university students in Taiwan have come up with an unusual way to draw attention to the huge problem of water pollution.
As part of the Polluted Water Popsicles Project, the students traveled to 100 different locations throughout the country to collect water samples and turn them into frozen popsicles.
These popsicles were then copied into 1:1 transparent poly resin models (non-melting!
), packaged in beautiful wrappers, and labeled with their origin.
The resulting exhibit is profound and disturbing – seemingly delicious popsicles that, at a closer glance, are oddly colored (considering they’re just made from water) and filled with sewage and trash, most of which is plastic.
The creators wrote on their Facebook page that their object is to “convey the importance of purified water.” This message is important for the entire world to hear, but it’s especially relevant in Taiwan right now.
My Modern Met reports: “As Taiwan has seen a rise in water pollution due to its rapid economic growth and urbanization, it was important for the students to call attention to the issue.
In collecting water from central areas that people often pass by, but overlook, Polluted Water Popsicles forces us to face the insidious issues beneath what we perceive as harmless.

Amid Contamination Concerns, Portsmouth and Greenland Ask N.H. to Pay Water Bills

Amid Contamination Concerns, Portsmouth and Greenland Ask N.H. to Pay Water Bills.
The city of Portsmouth and the town of Greenland are asking the state to help pay for public water at homes whose private wells may be at risk of water contamination.
Officials in Greenland had previously asked Portsmouth, which operates the only public well in Greenland, to extend water lines to about 300 homes near the landfill.
Now the two communities are teaming up.
They’re asking the state to use about $17 million dollars from a settlement fund to extend the water lines.
That fund was created by lawsuits over contamination from a chemical used in gasoline that contaminated groundwater across the state.
Jack Blalock is mayor of Portsmouth.
“The money is available from a contaminating source, the MtBe money is available.
And this is the type of project that seems suitable, to use that money to ensure clean water for residents.” The state Department of Environmental Services is currently testing monitoring wells at the site in an effort to map the boundaries of the contaminated water plume.
No private wells have tested above state thresholds for unsafe levels of contaminants.

At leats 50 taken ill in Rajkot, civic body suspects water contamination as cause

AT LEAST 50 persons from Jungleshwar area of Rajkot were admitted to civil hospital after they complained of diarrhea and vomiting late on Monday evening and early on Tuesday.
While the RMC said no deaths were reported, police said two persons from the area died after similar complaints on both the days.
More persons developed similar symptoms overnight and were rushed to hospital on Tuesday.
They say they are drinking water from a public hand-pump in the area.
Prima facie, it seems a case of drinking contaminated water rather than poisoning.
We have taken samples of water from the hand-pump and sent them for bacterial and fungal contamination,” Dr Manish Chunara, chief health officer of RMC said.
Dr Chunara said that all the patients admitted to the hospital were in stable condition and likely to be discharged by late Tuesday evening.
The health officer said that all the affected persons were natives of Uttar Pradesh who had been residing in Rajko and working in local factories.
Police said Kumar Jayprakash Shah (25), a resident of that area was admitted to Rajkot civil hospital on Sunday afternoon after complaints of diarrhea and died that evening.
On Monday evening, another resident identified as Malikrama Jahajram (25) also died in the hospital after similar complaints.

Fecal Microbes In 60% of Sampled Wells

Fecal Microbes In 60% of Sampled Wells.
Up to 60 percent of sampled wells in a Kewaunee County study contained fecal microbes, many of which are capable of making people and calves sick, two scientists told hundreds of local residents gathered at a public meeting Wednesday night. The microorganisms included Cryptosporidium, a parasite that comes from both people and animals.
“Obviously we shouldn’t have septic systems if they aren’t working.
The study tested water from 621 of them representing wells with various depths of soil to bedrock.
Seventy-nine of those wells were contaminated by a fecal microorganism — either a virus, parasite or bacteria — 62 of which were linked directly to either bovine or human sources.
Of the 12,200 people using private wells in the county, a projected 140 people per year are infected, as well as 1,700 calves.
“Some people have the money to fix it, but there are many people who can’t even find $500 dollars to put in a treatment system at one faucet,” he said.
Borchardt said when dangerous pathogens were found in private wells during the course of the study, homeowners got phone calls right away to alert them to the results.
The researchers placed autosamplers in three homes to continuously test water quality during periods of recharge.
“Even if the water’s not brown,” Borchardt said, “it doesn’t mean you aren’t drinking contaminated water.” Asked how to solve Kewaunee County’s water problems, Borchardt suggested an expensive fix.
