Gambia: Pollution Affects Gunjur Bolongfenyoto Lagoon.
Water Pollution is affecting aquatic and marine life, causing the death of many.
It is used for fishing by tourists and natives alike, and many wild animals can be found there as well.
When visited by these reporters on May 25, 2017, many marine organisms were found dead on the shores of the Gunjur Lagoon (Bolongfenyoto).
She further said she has been residing there for many years but since a fish meal company started operation, the water became polluted, adding that at midday the water darkens, which she said has never happened prior to the establishment of the company.
He added that he acquired this from the Lagoon where he swims.
Badara N. Barjoe, the Director of Environmental Protection and Development Group, said the pollution seriously affects tourism in Gunjur.
He said the reserve called Fabadinka along the lagoon, has many importance including biodiversity, and the location is an attractive and breeding ground for aquatic animals and mangrove; that the area serves as a tourist attraction because of the wild birds, crocodiles and many species of animals, that are in the area.
He said the reserve is unique because of its richness in biodiversity; that most of the endangered species and other animals, can be found in the reserve site that also serves as a tourist attraction for the country.
He added that he has been in the reserve land since 1997 and the water colour has never changed and there has never been any massive death of aquatic organisms like this.
Warkworth’s Dyno Nobel polluted water that killed five cattle and a calf
A WARKWORTH explosives company has been fined $460,000 after five cattle died – including a pregnant cow that aborted a dead calf – when toxic wastewater entered a farm dam. Dyno Nobel was convicted of a water pollution offence and breaching its licence after several failures in January, 2015 led to chemical-laden wastewater leaving two holding dams at its Warkworth site and flowing beneath a road before entering a nearby farm dam and stopping 200 metres from the Hunter River. The company, which was founded by Alfred Nobel who later gave his name to the Nobel Prize, entered guilty pleas during a NSW Land and Environment Court hearing after action by the NSW Environment Protection Authority. The court heard a farmer moved between 60 and 80 mainly pregnant cattle on to a paddock next to the Warkworth Dyno Nobel site that he had leased since 2009. He moved the cattle on February 20, 2015 and returned four days later. The farm dam was the only source of water within the leased paddock area. The court heard when the farmer returned four days later five cattle were dead, and one of the dead cows had partly aborted its calf which was also dead. “The dead cattle…
NGT notice to UP govt over dirty water in Sambhal district
NGT notice to UP govt over dirty water in Sambhal district.
A bench headed by Justice Jawad Rahim issued notices to the Yogi Adityanath government, state pollution control board, Sambhal district magistrate and the municipal council while seeking their replies before July 13.
"Children are drinking dirty water.
It’s shocking.
Why don’t you do something," the bench, also comprising expert Nagin Nanda, said.
The plea filed by advocate Gaurav Bansal said as per the website of the national rural drinking water programme maintained by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, the groundwater of 30 villages of Sambhal district was heavily contaminated.
He contended that the people in these villages were forced to drink polluted water due to the inaction by the state government in resolving the issue.
The lawyer has sought directions to the state government to provide potable drinking water to the villages in the district where handpumps were discharging contaminated water.
The lawyer said he had himself visited one such village Sharifpur and found that all the handpumps were releasing yellow coloured water.
"During the visit, applicant was told by the villagers of Sharifabad and Kurkawali that many of the interior villages were facing acute potable water shortage," it said.
NGT sends notice to Yogi govt over high levels of groundwater water contamination
NGT sends notice to Yogi govt over high levels of groundwater water contamination.
UP, Sambhal: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has sent a notice to UP Pollution Control Board and District Magistrate of Sambhal condemning the high levels of groundwater pollution in the region, forcing children to drink unhygienic water.
The notice was sent citing an earlier plea by retired scientist Dr Chandra Vir Singh, which highlighted the concerns over drinking water of being heavily contaminated.
After sending a notice to the UP government and the concerned authorities, NGT has asked them to file their response before the next date of hearing on the issue.
The environment regulatory board has also claimed that children in the region are forced to drink heavily contaminated groundwater, causing severe health issues.
As per sources, the person who filed the plea, attached photos of locations where children can be seen drinking highly contaminated hand pump water, which not only contains insects but also germs that are not visible to the naked eye.
As per news agency reports, the NGT had earlier issued notices to the state Jal Nigam, asking why penalties should not be imposed on them for their incapability to provide clean drinking water in Ghaziabad, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, Baghpat and Saharanpur districts.
The NGT also took cognisance of the fact that people were forced to drink polluted water due to inaction by the Uttar Pradesh government in resolving the issue.
This is not the first time that the NGT has pulled up the state government, Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam and the UP Pollution Control Board for putting the lives of innocent children – residing in these villages – at risk.
The fresh notice comes as a big blow to the UP government, which has its work cut out in stabilising the appalling law and order situation in the state.

New Milford’s second sewer superintendent in eight months quits
New Milford’s second sewer superintendent in eight months quits.
NEW MILFORD — The superintendent of the New Milford’s sewer system, Michael Finoia, will resign Friday, little more than a week after saying he could no longer be responsible for the excessive amounts of septic waste being accepted by the Water Pollution Control Authority.
Robert Pudelka quit in September after two years in the job.
Finoia’s departure comes at another crossroads, as the commission considers increasing sewer rates to the repay the town millions owed for a 2012 plant upgrade.
After the meeting, the commission and town decided to accept Finoia’s resignation, which he had threatened during a tense meeting of the Sewer Commission last week, Gronbach said.
“We asked to meet with him, because that Sewer Commission meeting was so contentious, just to get to the bottom of his resignation threat four months into the job,” Gronbach said.
“But up to the point he threatened to resign, there were no conversations about it.” Finoia said during last week’s meeting he hadn’t broached the issue before because of the town’s “money problems.” Gronbach said money differences between the town and WPCA had nothing to do with Pudelka’s resignation last September and should not have prompted Finioa’s.
“All the financial issues are between the town and the Sewer Commission,” Gronbach said.
The money differences stem from a sewer-plant upgrade in 2012 in which the town paid for the $22 million expansion and the WPCA agreed to pay the town back with sewer-line connection fees.
The commission was set to discuss a 5 percent increase in operational costs before Finioa’s threat derailed last week’s meeting.
How to avoid drinking contaminated water after a hurricane
How to avoid drinking contaminated water after a hurricane.
When a hurricane crashes onto shore with destructive winds and deadly storm surge, its threat to clean water supply is a major concern.
Consuming contaminated water can lead to serious health problems, including gastrointestinal illness and reproductive issues, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Lack of pressure in the water system increases the likelihood of dirty storm water leaking into the lines, he said.
In the two months following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the EPA found no occurrences of waterborne illnesses or diseases resulting from contaminated drinking water in some states, including Mississippi.
In the weeks after the hurricane, lack of clean drinking water led to a cholera outbreak, according to the Associated Press.
“If people do actually have water pressure out of their sinks, they’re told to make sure to boil that water before consuming it,” Trygar said.
Consumers should avoid all contact with the water supply if a Do Not Use notice is issued, as boiling will not destroy all contaminants, according to the Water Quality Research Foundation.
For drinking and personal hygiene, FEMA recommends storing at least three days’ worth of water per person in a cool, dark place.
Flooded wells should be tested and disinfected after the water levels go down, according to the FDA.
