Alleged water pollution caught on TV.
Miners on Discovery Channel’s ‘Gold Rush’ are in territorial court after allegedly pouring gasoline in a dredge pond and lighting it on fire.
A Yukon miner who is featured in the Discovery Channel reality series Gold Rush is on trial in Yukon Territorial Court.
Tony Beets who runs the Paradise Hill mine near Dawson City, is charged under the Waters Act with allegedly permitting the deposit of waste into water, failing to report it, and failing to comply with conditions of a water licence.
It’s alleged some gas was poured onto a dredge pond in October of 2014, and set on fire, with a complaint only arising after the act was featured on the TV show.
The brief segment was played for the court Wednesday morning, and showed Beets standing in front of the fire, saying it was a ‘Viking baptism’ for the dredge.
Welder Marc Favron testified he was the one who dumped about a gallon and a bit of gas on the pond, and lit it on fire, saying he did ask Beets if he could do it, to which Beets replied he didn’t care.
Favron told the court he pled guilty to charges of his own and paid a $1,700 fine, saying he did it on off hours for fun, and it wasn’t a staged scene even though it was caught on film and aired on TV.
The trial is expected to wrap up Wednesday.

Confrontational or inoffensive? Crayfish mural sparks art debate in Auckland
Crayfish mural sparks art debate in Auckland.
Queenstown-based street artist Tess Sheerin painted a large crayfish mural on the side of the Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna, on Auckland’s North Shore, earlier this month.
"There is a new mural on the Bruce Mason Centre that is particularly ghastly, gross, whatever words you’d like to use," Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member Jennifer McKenzie said in an April 11 local board meeting.
"I’m actually really frustrated and unimpressed by this, not because I’m anti street art, but it’s actually quite a confrontational piece of artwork.
There are enough things going on in South Auckland, issues, and you look at this place making such a major issue about this, it’s amazing," Mangere Bridge resident Brent Watt said Auckland Live director Robbie Macrae was involved in approving artist Tess Sheerin’s request to paint the mural, and said part of the role of public art is to generate debate.
"We are always happy to talk to local boards about any issues," Macrae said.
"I think with any public art, when you’re trying to raise awareness around local issues such as water pollution, it’s designed for people to look at it and have a think, and it’s designed for people to comment on, around the art or the issues.
Macrae also said the mural was temporary, although there is no set time frame for how long it will remain on the Bruce Mason Centre.
"There’s been a lot of criticism of the subject matter," Gillon said.
However, only 26 per cent of people believed it should stay because of its artistic merit.
GSPCB inspects Sonshi for air, water pollution
GSPCB inspects Sonshi for air, water pollution.
PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Tuesday inspected Sonshi village, where the locals claim to have been denied the right of fresh air and water, due to mining ore transportation, that is raising clouds of dust and drying up water bodies.
Team Herald PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Tuesday inspected Sonshi village, where the locals claim to have been denied the right of fresh air and water, due to mining ore transportation, that is raising clouds of dust and drying up water bodies.
GSPCB sources confirmed that the inspection was conducted for air and water pollution, but refused to disclose their findings.
Meanwhile, Vedanta Limited, through a statement said that beginning Wednesday, there would be temporary diversion of the transportation of ore bypassing the residential area of Sonshi.
“The temporary diversion is till further measures for mitigation are taken to reduce the pollution level which at present is well within permissible parameters,” the company official said.
The company said it is not a standalone issue of Vedanta and concerns all mining fraternity working in the area.
“As a responsible and sustainable miner, we will work along with the government and stakeholders at large towards a proactive approach to resolve the crisis at the earliest,” the official said.
“However, we would like to state that the root cause of the issue was business, economy related,” the company said.
Water contamination risk from drilling ‘unacceptable’
Oil drilling plans in Stoughton could pose ‘an unacceptable risk’ to a public water supply, according to the Environment Agency.
The Bedhampton and Havant springs provide water to 34 per cent of people in the area managed by Portsmouth Water, which supplies Chichester, Bognor and a significant region of the South Downs.
Controversy over the plans for exploratory oil wells in Markwells Wood has centred around contamination risks to the water source for several months.
Applicant UK Oil and Gas said drilling would be safe and issued fresh documentation earlier this year in response to concerns.
But the EA’s second report found the revised information was still insufficient and urged the ‘precautionary principle’ to protect and manage the water source.
“Further evidence based assessment of the hydrogeology at the Markwells Wood site is needed to show potential risks have been identified and understood.” Around 2,000 objections have been made to the plans ,including campaign group Markwells Wood Watch, which crowdfunded its own hydrogeological report last month.
The group is now putting pressure on the EA to change the status of the area around Markwells Wood to a Source Protection Zone 1, a level that would prohibit all drilling.
It is hoped a refusal at the site, which falls within the South Downs National Park, would set a precedent in the area.
“Oil production in this area is simply too risky.” What do you think?

If businesses write the rules we’ll all be less safe (Editorial)
If businesses write the rules we’ll all be less safe (Editorial).
Running a successful business would be a whole lot easier if it weren’t for all those annoying federal rules and regulations.
This, effectively, is what businesses told the White House when they were asked what the federal government could do to help make their lives easier.
But before cheering their suggestions – and damning the burdensome feds – it makes sense to consider the source.
Better yet, some might say, just get rid of them completely.
And so it is with many of the suggestions from businesses and groups promoting them.
Like the imagined impatient drivers, they want fewer rules and regulations.
This is not to suggest that there aren’t some needlessly burdensome federal rules and regulations.
There are so many departments and agencies, so many sets of rules, that getting even a fairly simple project off the ground can seem daunting.
Among the suggestions put forward by businesses and their associated groups: The U.S. Chamber of Commerce doesn’t believe that our nation’s businesses should be required to submit injury and illness reports to the Labor Department electronically, enabling them to be put "on the internet for anyone to see."
