A company aims to raise 500 000 days of clean water to help with the water crisis in South Africa

A company aims to raise 500 000 days of clean water to help with the water crisis in South Africa.
Procter & Gamble SA has announced it has a goal to raise 500 000 days of clean water, as part of the global P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Programme, an which initiative looks to tackle water issues currently facing South Africa.
As we have seen, flash flooding, as a result of drought, can also wreak devastation on underprivileged communities.
Since 2004, the programme has provided more than 11 billion litres of clean water to desperate communities around the world.
To help address the problem of access to clean water in Africa, in the last 12 years, the programme has managed to provide over 6 billion litres of clean drinking water to 40 countries on the African continent through its P&G water purifying packets.
“Clean water does not only quench thirst, promote health and prevent unnecessary deaths, it means more people can work and enhance productivity.
In fact, the World Health Organisation has estimated that every one US dollar invested in clean water, sanitation and hygiene generates four US dollars in increased productivity, which enables sustainable and equitable economic growth,” said Mabaso, addressing the long-term effects of water in destitute communities.
This will assist in achieving one of the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals – ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
The CSDW continues to provide clean water to our neighbouring countries as well, to ensure that even more communities have their lives enhanced by this basic human right,” Mabaso concluded in his statement.
P&G’s clean water programme comes at a crucial time in South Africa.

Shellfish beds opened, stream advisories lifted as water quality improves

Shellfish beds opened, stream advisories lifted as water quality improves.
Kitsap Public Health District has lifted health advisories for three streams in the county after water samples showed reduced levels of bacteria.
The state Department of Health also approved 57 acres of shellfish beds near Indianola for commercial harvest in a report published this week, a sign of improving environmental health in the area.
Failing septic systems, leaking sewage pipes, and pet and wildlife poop are common culprits.
Stream advisories lifted The health district lifted health advisories this year for Barrantes, Bear and Karcher creeks, three streams that previously had elevated levels of bacteria.
“All of them are fairly small streams, so any significant source of bacteria can make the concentration in the stream higher much more quickly,” Ultican said.
Sources of pollution were different in each stream.
Ultican said chemical analysis of water samples from Little Scandia suggests wildlife waste is the source of high bacteria levels in the stream.
The Department of Health report approving the Indianola shellfish beds cited the health district’s success identifying and correcting failing septic systems in the area.
Kiess said the state is expected to approve more than 600 acres of shellfish beds in Liberty Bay for harvest in the near future, based on improved water quality.

Impact Of Pollution On Cancer

There are many types of environmental pollution and some of them cause cancer.
Cancer is spread through any of the media of pollution namely through water pollution, air pollution and land pollution.
Through land pollution cancer is spread by exposure of human beings to pesticides, radioactive materials and heavy metals.
Under land pollution, the exposure of human beings to wastes like heavy metals, pesticides used in agricultural activities leads to the spread of cancer.
The use of domestic fuels for cooking causes lung cancer.
Another cause where the development of lung cancer due to indoor pollution arises is where liquefied petroleum gas is used for cooking.
Lung cancer has been common to women who get exposed to smoke from liquefied when cooking.
Burning of volatile substances especially when cooking leads to the spread of cancer to human beings.
Using of hydrocarbons in indoors can also lead to the spread of lung cancer.
Ground water pollution and ocean pollution also fall under water pollution; Cancer can arise through water pollution.

In the land of 6,000 rivers, a contamination crisis: Nepal’s water nightmare

The water is contaminated with the E Coli (Escherichia coli) bacteria but she still uses it to wash and cook food for her children.
The government, however, can only meet 20 per cent of that demand, especially during the dry season, reported The Himalayan Times.
People have resorted to buying water from private water sellers who get their supplies from the water factories or rivers.
But most of the water supplies in Kathmandu are contaminated.
To find out how unsafe the water is, Get Rea!
took for testing, the water from the well was the most contaminated as it was located next to a severely polluted river.
Some 6,000 rivers flow through Nepal but none of those in the Kathmandu Valley are clean.
“As a result, the sewage leaked through the water pipes and got mixed with stone taps.
“There is no water in Kathmandu that you can drink directly because most of the water supply in Kathmandu is very contaminated," he said.
“The piped (treated) water supply may get contaminated during transmission.

Judge reverses ruling for two PA families in water contamination case

Judge reverses ruling for two PA families in water contamination case.
SCRANTON, Pa. (WNEP) — Two families from Dimock, Pennsylvania will not receive the $4.24 million a jury awarded them last year over water contamination.
On Friday, a jury’s verdict from last year, that ordered Cabot Oil and Gas to pay the families, was overturned.
The Ely and Hubert families from Susquehanna County took Cabot Oil and Gas to court, claiming its drilling near their homes ruined their water.
A federal judge said irregularities were present in testimony during the trial that he called "troubling."
He also said there were missteps by attorneys in the jury’s presence, saying that $4.2 million in damages wasn’t a justified amount for the Cabot to pay.
"The judge appears to have ignored our expert testimony.
It is not clear to me why the court required an entire year to essentially rubber-stamp the companies’ position that they were somehow robbed of a fair trial.
There will be justice for these families."
Cabot issued a statement saying it felt confident that after a review of the scientific evidence and a review of the attorneys’ conduct, the flaws in the verdict would be understood.
