UK heatwave dries up water supplies in Llandeilo, residents say

Some people relying on private water supplies in rural Carmarthenshire say they ran out of drinking water weeks ago due to the dry weather.
Carmarthenshire council said people affected could get in touch for help.
Ms Rees’ home is usually supplied with water from a well in her garden but it started to run out in June.
"We fill up buckets of water and we only flush the toilet with those buckets of water, maybe once or twice a day."
About 1% of the population of England and Wales use a private water supply, according to Welsh Water, and they do not have to pay a water company for it.
Welsh Water said it was providing bottled water for councils to "distribute to customers whose private water supplies are currently affected".
Carmarthenshire County Council said anyone whose private drinking water source has dried up should get in touch for advice, with drinking water available at pick-up points.
Farmers Geoff and Sue Freeman are draining a pond to provide their 200 sheep with water after their two wells dried up, and are relying on the goodwill of family and friends to bathe.
Mr Freeman said: "You feel uncomfortable being in their house because you are actually dirty and that is not a very pleasant feeling."

Drought threatens Colorado River, Utah plans to divert more water to wasteful county

(KUTV) – As a drought threatens water supplies in the Colorado River Basin, Utah plans to build the Lake Powell Pipeline that will divert extra water its most wasteful county.
Per capita, upstream states like Utah, Colorado and Wyoming increased residential water use by 7 percent between 2010 and 2015.
But, water use has declined by 14 percent in California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico over the same period.
"As lower basin cities make plans to walk away from their water, Utah is aiming to make things worse by diverting additional water they don’t need," Taylor-Graham, Water and Environmental Journalist at the Utah Rivers Council, said in a news release.
The Lake Powell Pipeline is 140-feet-long.
It will divert 86,000 acre-feet of water annually uphill to Washington County.
According to the pipeline’s federal project application, residents in the county use 325 gallons per capita a day.
"Utah’s failure to reduce water waste while planning new, destructive diversions flies in the face of the collective progress made in the Colorado River Basin," Graham said in a news release.

Nanaimo’s DisconTent City now has access to city water supply

A splitter on the hose allows two people to access water at a time, says resident Jason Cormier, 24.
An order was issued to the city last week to install potable water, more toilets, and hand sanitizing devices.
The city also brought in three more portable toilets to the tent city, at 1 Port Drive.
You know water is essential.” “It has been difficult to provide water for everybody.” Some local businesses have discouraged campers from accessing water to fill drinking bottles but a couple of nearby fast-food outlets have been accommodating, Wendy said.
DisconTent City is among tent cities established on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.
It is a busy place, with people coming and going.
Fry has heard that drug dealers have moved onto the property and said the dynamic of the tent city is changing.
New people have set up tents.
They are people that Fry said she doesn’t recognize from Nanaimo’s homeless population.
By the time a rental unit had been advertised for a couple of days, there are already about 60 people ready to take it, making it impossible to find a place, Cormier said.

Steps taken by Delhi Government to improve water supply

Days after the report released by Niti Aayog on shortage of water, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal assured that the capital will not face any such issue in next two years.
"There is problem of water supply in some areas of the city.
"Water will then flow and travel up to Wazirabad.
These are the datelines for phase-wise roll-out of the water treatment process," the government said in a statement.
After informing about the plans, the chief minister of Delhi said that the work of the Burari STP would be completed by June next year.
Knowing the rising demand of water, the Delhi government will increase water availability by 15 – 20 per cent in next two years and 50 per cent in five years.
"Reviving these lakes will lead to increase in groundwater level in the surrounding areas…. We also plan to inject treated STP water into the ground to ensure that groundwater level does not fall, especially in areas where groundwater level is fairly high as of now," Kejriwal said.
The government has been negotiating with the Uttar Pradesh government to concretise the canal through which water comes to the national capital from the neighbouring state.

Decades on, Kishanpura village waits for water supply

Chandigarh Satinder Pal Singh Zirakpur, July 2 Residents of Kishanpura village, situated 4 km from Zirakpur, have been waiting for the water supply for the past many decades.
The villagers, especially women, have no option but to dependent on hand pumps or motors for water.
The village is facing water scarcity when several sponsored flagship schemes have been launched for providing basic amenities to downtrodden sections and residents of backward areas.
The villagers said a few families had started migrating because of the water crisis in the area.
Though the village was inducted into the MC jurisdiction in 2004, the residents’ woes have not come to an end.
With no potable water source available in the village, the residents have started digging up their own bore wells.
According to the residents, a tube well was installed 18 months ago, which was inaugurated by local MLA NK Sharma, but the department concerned has not given a power connection.
With the Congress government coming to power, the area councillor, along with residents, is again making the rounds of the department concerned for the power connection.
Councillor Jagdev Singh said, “We have written to the authorities concerned many times in this regard, but to no avail.” He said even students of government elementary school had to drink water from a hand pump installed outside the school.
Though hand pumps are installed, their water is not fit for consumption,” rued Jasveer Kaur, a resident of Kishanpura village.

29,973 households lack reliable water supply in the country

Although about 98 percent of the households have access to improved drinking water, the reliability of water supply stands at 81 percent, the population and housing census of Bhutan (PHCB) 2017 report states.
The report states that about 98.6 percent of the total households have access to improved drinking water as of 2017 compared to 84.5 percent in 2005.

According to BLSS 2017, about 63 percent of households responded to have 24 hours access to drinking water.
The report also shows that 69 percent of the total households without reliable water sources are in rural areas.
While 98.6 percent of the total households have access to improved drinking water sources, about 2,231 households depend on unimproved water sources, which includes unprotected well, spring, rivers, streams, lake, pond, dam and other sources as the main source of drinking water.
With 360 households, Chukha has the maximum households using unprotected water sources.
Other households have piped water inside the dwelling, piped water outside the dwelling, protected well or spring, and rainwater collection as the main source of drinking water.
The report states that about 77,996 households, which is about 47 percent of the total, have piped water inside the dwelling.

Lawsuit claims workers lied to Flint prisoners about jail’s water source

FLINT, MI — Genesee County Jail employees lied to prisoners by saying the water source inside the facility had been switched back to Detroit from the Flint River more than a year before that actually took place, according to a federal lawsuit.
Sheriff Robert Pickell, Jail Administrator Capt.
The lawsuit alleges Pickell, Gould and Genesee County violated the inmates’ Constitutional rights by forcing them to drink contaminated water, not allowing inmates to receive bottled water from non-incarcerated individuals, rationed water for inmates to 33.8 ounces per day, denied access to bottle water unless inmates "deserved" it and eventually allowed inmates to purchase water from the jail’s commissary.
"It’s all fabricated.
I stand by my record of being good to human beings."
An official response to the allegations has not yet been filed.
"Plaintiffs were not offered any sort of clean water until well over a year after defendants Pickell and Gould knew that the Genesee County Jail’s tap water was contaminated," according to the lawsuit.
"Even after bottled water was available to the jail, plaintiffs were routinely denied access to the water.
Plaintiffs were denied water by Genesee County Jail personnel, whom defendants Pickell and Gould were responsible for, subjectively believed that plaintiffs did not ‘deserve it.’"
Jail employees refused to distribute bottled water to the inmates and kept it for employees’ use, the lawsuit alleges.
