Water pollution leading to feminization of male fish

According to researcher Natasha Gilbert, up to 86 per cent of male fish in some areas become femalelike as a result of exposure to widely-used contraceptives and anti-inflammatory drugs dumped into toilets and sinks. Some of the substances have an impact on fish livers, kidneys and gills. Exposure to some substances causes male fish to develop female anatomy and to produce the egg protein vitellogenin.
