Kansas City Water Services has issued a boil water advisory for part of Kansas City, North.

The department said residential and commercial customers in the area of Northwest 64th Street to Northwest 78th Street, and from North Congress Avenue to Northwest Waukomis Drive — excluding the cities of Platte Woods and Lake Waukomis — are advised to boil water because of a low-water-pressure event Tuesday.

A 12-inch water main broke at 4001 N.W. Bryan Ave., according to department spokeswoman Brooke Givens. Repairs are underway and water service has been restored, but Givens said a precautionary boil advisory was issued because of low water pressure. She said the water lab will take samples to ensure water quality and safety, and it will take 18 hours before the advisory can be canceled. An update is expected Wednesday morning.

Customers are advised to boil tap water vigorously for three minutes before using it for drinking, brushing teeth, cooking or preparing food. Ice made with unboiled tap water should not be used for drinking. The tap water is safe for other purposes such as bathing, but small children should be discouraged from swallowing that water.
