Boil water alert issued for Melbourne
"We urge all customers to conserve water and use as little as possible until the water main can be repaired. We do not currently have an estimated time for when this will be," a release from Melbourne spokeswoman Cheryl Mall read.
Although service was restored, crews were still working to repair the break and determine its cause Thursday evening, News 6 partner Florida Today reported.
Because water pressure briefly dropped below the required 20 psi, all Melbourne water customers — from Palm Shores to West Melbourne, including beachside communities Satellite Beach, Indian Harbour Beach, Indialantic and Melbourne Beach. were advised to boil water until the results of a bacteriological survey can clear the problem.
The city supplies drinking water for its population of about 77,000 and also for customers in surrounding cities, such as West Melbourne and several beachside communities, and unincorporated areas of Brevard County near the city.
