Boil water advisory lifted for village of Cato
On Saturday, Jan. 26, there was a loss in pressure due to a water line repair.
When this occurs, there is an increased likelihood that untreated water and harmful microbes can enter drinking water.
The health department said that water samples collected Monday confirm that there is no contamination in the distribution system, and residents may resume using the water without boiling first.

Frequent short term water problems new norm for many First Nations
Ashley Brandson Martha Troian APTN News While the Liberal government says progress has been made on a campaign pledge to end long term drinking water advisories in First Nations communities, some of those communities say they’ve since lost count of how many times they’ve been under short term advisories.
The latest First Nation community to have its long-term drinking water advisory lifted is Weenusk First Nation in Ontario as of late last year.
Shamattawa First Nation in Manitoba is just one community that has been under a short-term advisory since December 6, 2018, affecting up to 5000 people.
“It’s a boil water advisory, so we can’t drink right from the tap, we have to boil our water just like many other communities in the north,” said Chief Eric Redhead.
It’s just unacceptable to live that way.” Redhead says Shamattawa First Nation came off a long-term drinking water advisory approximately two years ago, but it has since been placed under a string of short-term drinking water advisories.
Redhead said he lost count how many times the community has been on a drinking water advisory since 2016.
David Trout, the community’s water treatment plant operator agrees with Redhead.
A spokesperson with the department says some communities will face recurrent short term advisories but continues to support “First Nations-led approaches to addressing new and ongoing drinking water advisories.” Unclear whether drinking water advisories data collected by government While Indigenous Services displays the number of water-related advisories on its website, it’s difficult to determine if that is the whole picture.
When asked whether or not the department collects data on water and wastewater management, including short-term and long-term drinking water advisories, APTN News was informed repeatedly First Nation communities are owners and operators of this infrastructure, including its own data and that it is up to the community to share this information with the department.
APTN asked the community of Shamattawa if they are collecting their own data and whether OCAP is being implemented.
Paola’s boil water advisory has been lifted
PAOLA — The city of Paola’s boil water advisory that was issued Sunday, Jan. 27, following a water pipe break was lifted shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29.
City officials confirmed Tuesday morning that water samples that were sent to the Kansas Department of Health & Environment have come back clean.
The break was in a Marais des Cygnes Public Utility Authority (PUA) 16-inch line near the intersection of Baptiste Drive and 311th Street, and it resulted in loss of pressure at the city’s main water tower.
PUA water lines deliver treated water to the cities of Paola and Louisburg from the water plant located on the northwest corner of 343rd Street and Victory Road near the Marais des Cygnes River.
Crews quickly began working to repair the line Sunday, and they finished up Monday afternoon.
The city used the interconnection with Miami County Rural Water District No.

Due to this loss of pressure, as a precaution, customers are advised to boil water until further notice.” The precautionary boil water advisory will remain in effect until bacteriological samples are collected and analyzed to reflect a negative result for coliform, a type of bacteria, according to the notice.
Until laboratory tests are completed to confirm the water has not been contaminated, the boil water notice remains in effect.

Ottawa to examine First Nation’s water system after residents voice concerns
The federal government says it will look into what it would take to improve the water and sewer system in Garden Hill First Nation in Northern Manitoba — a fly-in reserve where many residents refuse to drink their tap water for fear it’s unsafe.
Michel Burrowes, a deputy director with Indigenous Services Canada, said the federal agency decided to move ahead with a feasibility study "in part" because of concerns raised by a recent CBC investigation that revealed Garden Hill residents struggle to access clean water.
Options could include building a new water treatment plant and an expanded water main, allowing more homes can get their water piped directly from the plant, he said.
Government officials plan to meet with Garden Hill’s chief and council on Feb. 14 to discuss the study.
Burrowes also said it’s unlikely that any of the homes lacking running water and indoor plumbing will be part of the review; those homes were left out of an earlier retrofit program that installed running water in the community because they were unfit to live in.
A previous study completed in 2012 found that Garden Hill’s water treatment plant is expected to remain serviceable until 2032, Burrowes said.
Funding for a new plant was reviewed, but since Garden Hill isn’t under a boil-water advisory, it wasn’t considered a priority.
"The service standard is to provide potable water to all the houses — and part of that service standard says that you can do it by truck," he said.
Two years later, the federal government launched a $40-million program to retrofit 769 homes in the region — including 216 in Garden Hill — with cistern and indoor plumbing.
But a CBC investigation found that not all the water tanks are regularly cleaned.
Boil advisory for Middleburg Heights, Strongsville lifted after water main break
MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio– The Cleveland Division of Water lifted the boil advisory for portions of Middleburg Heights and Strongsville on Tuesday.

The road remains closed between Sheldon and Bagley roads.

The water is safe to drink and use as normal, according to the Cleveland Division of Water.
Officials said it could take all week to repair the 36-inch pipe.
Our national shame: The racism inherent in our First Nations water crisis
Meantime, the city turned to the Flint River as its source.
It took a few years before the people of Flint could once again count on that.
For the Shoal Lake 40 First Nation, which straddles the Manitoba-Ontario boundary, it’s been 20 years.
That is our national shame.
While some headway has been made, there are still too many Indigenous communities that can’t tap into the same safe resources that the rest of us can.
Right now, 62 long-term advisories (ones in place for more than a year) remain outstanding.
There are long-term, structural problems with the water treatment systems in many Indigenous communities that have not been addressed.
It’s more difficult to rely on as a reason when you’re talking about communities that haven’t had access to safe drinking water for 25 years.
And while that situation is particularly absurd, there are many Indigenous people that haven’t had good, reliable water to consume for several years.
Which leads to the question: How much does racism play in our water crisis in Canada?
Boil water advisory issued after main breaks in Fonda
FONDA — Village of Fonda residents have been issued a boil water advisory until further notice due to a water main break, authorities said.
A water main break on Hickory Hill Road on Monday morning led to water services needing to be shut off until Monday evening to allow Department of Public Works crews to repair the break, officials said.
Those affected by the water main break resided on Hickory Hill Road from the reservoir to Route 5 with users on Route 5, Pilling Drive and Perry Lane.
Residents affected by the water main break were issued notices by the village.
Fonda-Fultonville Central School District canceled all evening activities Monday evening, including athletic events and the Board of Education meeting, because the campus had no running water.
Under the boil water notice, all water for consumption in the village should be brought to a boil for two minutes and allowed to cool before using, officials said.
