CFPUA cuts off flow of fluoride during investigation

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority is investigating after they issued an alert for nearly 30,000 people in New Hanover County to not drink their water due to high levels of fluoride.
“Fluoridation of water systems has been around for 60, 70 years.
And the main purpose of it is to reduce tooth decay,” Vandermeyden said.
Since the alert and boil water advisory, CFPUA has cut off the flow of fluoride completely and plan on leaving the system off until they figure out what happened.
“We certainly apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused,” Vandermeyden said.
“And we appreciate our customers patience with us as we work through this.” Many are still concerned, but experts say it is nothing to worry about.
Experts add you would have to be exposed to the high levels of fluoride for a long period of time to become sick or get fluorosis.
“Most cases are mild if they happen at all,” Renaissance Dental Studio Dentist, Sarah Pless, DSS said.
“Not every child has the opportunity to go to the dentist during those formative years until about age 8 when most of the teeth have finished developing under the gum line,” Pless said.

Boil advisory lifted for New Hanover area

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. — A boil water advisory on the coast has been lifted after high levels of fluoride was reported on Wednesday.
EPA guidelines mandate that fluoride levels need to be below two grams/liter, but found levels between four and eight.
A CFPUA engineer says they’re making sure this doesn’t happen again.
“We’re looking at the mechanical systems, we’re looking at our controls and instrumentation systems, and we’re looking at our standard operating procedures just to see if we need to make changes.
And are there mechanical systems that we need to fix to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” said Carel Vandermeyden.

CFPUA temporarily stops adding fluoride to water at treatment plant

“We have disabled some equipment,” said Styers.
When asked about how long the investigation will take, Styers was not able to provide an estimate.
“After we got our system back up and running yesterday, we did start to investigate at the plant the mechanical equipment,” said Styers.
How long were fluoride levels too high in drinking water?
Fluoride levels returned to below 2 mg/L at 9 a.m., according to CFPUA’s Director of Engineering Carel Vandermeyden.
“We take samples every four hours when the plant is in operation,” said Vandermeyden in an interview yesterday.
What do scientific experts say about fluoride in tap water?
“But for a few hours over the course of one day, I’m not worried for anybody.” Fluoride added to tap water has been proven to protect teeth from decay, according to David Howard, assistant health director with New Hanover County.
“The ranges of intakes producing these opposing effects are not far apart.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) fully supports regulated fluoride in tap water to prevent tooth decay, writing that the safety and effectiveness have been shown by several scientific and public health organizations using study reviews and panels.
“Experts have weighed the findings and quality of available evidence and concluded that there is no association between water fluoridation and any unwanted health effects other than dental fluorosis,” according to the CDC.
