City issues boil-water advisory due to watermain break

Residents of the City of Weyburn and rural users of city water woke up with any water service Wednesday morning, following a major watermain break around 5 a.m. in the downtown area.
The watermain break was soon under control and was being repaired, but water reservoir levels were seriously depleted, requiring a shutdown of water service to the city and to the utility board users for a temporary time.
When the water supply does resume, a boil-water advisory is in place until further notice.
All city schools and the Southeast College are closed for the day.
In a notice sent out through the city’s alert system, the city said, “We are asking the public’s cooperation in restricting water usage to only essential use throughout the day.”

King Avenue closed

More than a dozen City of Delaware water customers are under a boil order advisory until 5 p.m. today, and King Avenue is closed for the foreseeable future following two separate, but related, water main breaks Monday afternoon on the city’s west side.
Following an initial investigation, Lee Yoakum, community affairs coordinator, told The Gazette the city believes the culprit was an underground valve associated with a fire hydrant (damaged months back during a car accident) that was under maintenance near the intersection of Central and Euclid avenues.
The rupture, he added, created a water “hammering” effect that led to a water main break at Euclid and Lincoln avenues.
According to Yoakum, the water line break was first reported at 2:32 p.m. on Monday, and city crews “located the shut-off valves and quickly came up with an action plan to shut off water at the King break, while interrupting service to as few as customers as possible.
This took about two hours.” While water was restored to Lincoln Avenue residents around 7 p.m. on Monday and to King Avenue and West William Street residents just before midnight, 14 water customers in the affected areas have been notified to boil their water until 5 p.m. today.
“The rupture occurred on a 16-inch water main that contains a tremendous amount of water under great pressure,” Yoakum said.
“Those two things combined create a great amount of force.
There was some displacement of the asphalt.
It lifted the pavement up and caused buckling down the hill (toward Blue Limestone Park).” Yoakum added the damage will require a “significant street rebuild” that likely won’t begin until after April 1 and could cost anywhere between $60,000 to $90,000 to repair.
Until King Avenue is repaired, Blue Limestone Park will only be accessible from John Street.
