‘Boil filtered water’ advisory issued for parts of downtown Flint
FLINT, Mich. – A ‘boil filtered water’ advisory is in effect for two buildings in downtown Flint.
According to the Flint public works department, a water main break on Second Street between Saginaw and Harrison Streets is affecting service to the Ferris Wheel Building and the Dryden Building.
Both of those buildings are on Saginaw Street.
Public Works director Rob Bincsik says the ‘boil filtered water’ advisory is a precautionary measure meant to protect the health and safety of water customers in the area.
Special emphasis was put on the boiling water run through a filter to remove lead.
Customers who do not use a filter to remove lead from their water are advised to let the water run for a minimum of seven minutes before boiling it in order to ‘flush’ the line.
Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and preparing food.
Boiling the water kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
The city will notify water customers in the affected area when the boil water advisory is lifted.
Anyone with questions can call the city of Flint Water Department at 810-766-7202.

Water main break leads to boil water advisory for 2 downtown Flint buildings
FLINT, MI — A precautionary boil filter water advisory was issued Wednesday afternoon for a pair of downtown Flint buildings.

Boil order lifted in Clinton-UPDATED
CLINTON, Iowa (KWQC) – UPDATE 2/7/18: Officials say water quality tests have confirmed the water in Clinton meets all state and federal water quality regulations.
As a result, effective at noon Wednesday, February 7, officials are lifting the precautionary boil water advisory that has been in effect in Clinton since Monday, February 5, 2018.
ORIGINAL: People living in Clinton, Iowa had to find another way to consume water after a water main break in the 1400 block of 13th Avenue South.
“Obviously a water main break is a big deal in a hospital,” said Amy Berentes, Vice President of Patient Care at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton.
“Those things like sterilization of equipment instrument, ability to take care of emergency patients and really keep operations running in a safe manner,” Berentes said.
She says they were able to quickly secure more than 200 cases of water.
“We feel like that is plenty,” she said.
“We will also offer additional opportunities for drinking water through our food service,” he said.
Just after 3:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon, Iowa American Water wrote to KWQC in an email the water main break was expected to take around 10 hours to repair.
Until otherwise notified, Clinton residents are asked to bring their water to a rolling boil for at least a minute before consuming it for drinking or cooking purposes.

Are water main breaks more common in Kalamazoo?
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Frigid winter temperatures have returned to West Michigan this week, bringing with it more water main breaks.
“Yeah, it’s pretty routine for us,” said Kalamazoo Public Services Director James Baker.
It’s been a busy season for city workers.
Baker says Kalamazoo had 42 water main breaks in January alone.
Each one came with its own boil water advisory.
“A lot of that has to do with the stresses that the pipe endures during cold weather, when the frost is either advancing or retreating,” says Baker.
“There’s movement in the ground.” Like road construction in the summer, it’s just part of the season.
“The majority of those main breaks do occur from November until about March,” he explained.
Baker says while the city averages between 70 and 80 water main breaks a year, he doesn’t think Kalamazoo has more water main breaks than comparable cities.
“It comes with the size of the system, the age of the system, and for communities our size I’d say we’re about average of main breaks,” Baker explains.

Norovirus Brings Boil Water Advisory to PyeongChang
(ATR) Olympic security personnel are in quarantine to contain a norovirus outbreak at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games.
PyeongChang 2018 organizers (POCOG) have confirmed 32 cases of norovirus, 21 of which are among private security forces being held at the Horeb Youth Center in Jinbu.
POCOG issued a statement with a list of measures to prevent the spread of the outbreak such as thoroughly washing hands and thoroughly cooking food.
An investigation is ongoing into the 1,023 residents of the youth center by the Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention to determine how the highly-contagious virus was contracted and spread.
In order to combat the diminished security force by the quarantine, POCOG has called in 900 South Korean military personnel.
“[Those who are sick] need only a few days of medical treatment."
This is the second international sporting event in the past seven months to suffer from a norovirus outbreak.
The 2017 IAAF World Championships in London also had a similar norovirus outbreak that affected 30 people and some athletes.
“As a president of POCOG, I would like to apologize for this,” Lee said.
