Water main break affects RPAC, water pressure of Ohio State buildings

A water main break reported early Thursday on Olentangy River Road near Ohio State’s Fawcett Center is causing water pressure issues throughout campus.
The City of Columbus Public Utilities team is on site of the main break and is in the process of making repairs, according to Ohio State’s facilities operations and development website.
The RPAC was without water from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m., said Dan Hedman, an Ohio State spokesman.
He said while the water pressure in several on-campus buildings was low and could be affected as a result, no boil advisory was issued by the City of Columbus Public Utilities.
Hedman said students, staff or faculty who experience water outages or issues should report it to Service2Facilities at 614-292-HELP (4357).
The main break caused some flooding near the area of the incident, which resulted in a temporary closure of Olentangy River Road between Lane Avenue and Ackerman Road.

Boil advisories continue for McCaysville, Copperhill

McCAYSVILLE, Ga. – A boil advisory remains in effect for McCaysville water customers Thursday, Jan. 11.
The city has been under the advisory since Friday, and the latest advisory is the city’s third boil advisory for its water customers since the beginning of October 2017.
The advisory stems from low tank levels at the city’s water plant, which occurred largely because of broken water mains during the recent cold weather experienced across the region over the past two weeks, according to McCaysville City Councilman and Water Commissioner Richard Wagner.
Wagner was unable to give timetable for when the boil advisory is expected to be lifted and added that tank levels at the water plant continue to be low.
“(City water crews) have worked hard (to repair the broken mains) and put in a lot of long hours, and I am very proud of them,” Wagner stated of the recent water system repair work throughout the city.
Consequently, the city of Copperhill, Tennessee, which receives its water from the McCaysville water system, also issued a boil advisory for its customers Saturday, Jan.6, which remains in effect for its customers, according to City Clerk Amber Brooks.
Currently, Copperhill is using fire engines and tankers to transfer water from Copper Basin Utility District hydrants in nearby Ducktown, Tennessee, in an effort to keep its own water tank full, Brooks stated.
For Copperhill, this is also its third boil advisory since October.
Before boil advisories can be lifted, a series of bacteriological testing must be conducted to ensure the safety of water and the water providers must receive clearance from the state.

Mohawk Valley Water Authority warns customers of December equipment malfunction

UTICA – Within the next few days, Mohawk Valley Water Authority customers will receive postcards in the mail, describing an equipment malfunction in their treatment plant.
On December 15th, a polymer pump experienced an electrical failure, stopping the flow of a polymer chemical into water drawn from Hinckley Reservoir.
The polymers bind together bacteria and other contaminants in the water, making them easier to filter out.
Without the polymers, the turbidity, or cloudiness, of the water rose higher than one Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU), a level deemed unsafe by New York State’s Department of Health.
"Microbes have an affinity for the particles of water, so an increase in turbidity could mean an increase in microbes," Phil Tangorra, Director of Water Quality said.
"When the polymer failed, when the pump failed, the turbidity rose within the treatment above that one unit standard."
Tangorra said the problem was detected before any water was passed along to the distribution plant or customers.
Tangorra also said the water was tested, and the addition of chlorine in the final stages of treatment killed the bacteria that wasn’t filtered out.
At this time, there is no boil water advisory, and MVWA officials have installed more alarms on the pump to prevent electrical failures in the future.
Tangorra said officials were given 30 days to alert customers of the problem.
