TARBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — A “major leak” in the Town of Tarboro’s water system has resulted in the closure of five schools in the town Friday, according to Edgecombe County Public Schools.
The schools are closed today “due to continued issues” with the water system, county school officials said.
All other schools in the district will operate on the planned early release schedule.
According to Edgecombe County officials, the leak has caused periods of low pressure and outages in the distribution system in Tarboro.
The county’s Division of Water Resources advised that residents boil all water used for human consumption or use bottled water until testing shows the water is safe.
Test results usually take 48 to 72 hours to come in.
They’re also advising that consumers to conserve water whenever possible.

Tarboro residents told to boil water

TARBORO — The town of Tarboro is telling its water consumers to boil water for human consumption (including drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation) or use bottled water.
According to notice from R. Lindsay Stroud with the town’s water system, Tarboro is experiencing periods of low pressure and outages in the distribution system due to a major leak in the water system.
“Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increases the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system,” Stoud said.
Vigorous boiling for one minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.
“This office is strongly urging the water consumers to conserve water whenever possible.
This advisory remains in effect until further written notification is issued.” Because of the problem Tarboro schools are closed today, including Martin Millennium Academy, Pattillo Middle School, Princeville Elementary, Stocks Elementary and Tarboro High School.

Boil water advisory over after Wyoming water main break

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — A boil water advisory has been lifted for residents near a water main break in Wyoming.
The precautionary advisory was in effect for two neighborhoods near the intersection of 44th Street and Burlingame Avenue, where a 20-inch water main broke Tuesday.
Boil water advisories are common after main breaks cause a drop in system pressure that can lead to bacteria in the water.
Some area residents also lost water service for more than 24 hours before it was restored Wednesday.
The break caused the road to be shut down while repairs were underway, but both directions of 44th reopened between Burlingame and Oriole avenues early Thursday evening, days earlier than previously expected.
The break was blamed on the old age of the cast iron water line, which was installed in the mid-1960s.

Later, a private company’s contractors hit a 16-inch water main near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Ione Street.

Crews are working to repair both lines and restore pressure to normal operational levels.
Therefore, as a precaution, the Department of Water & Sewerage is issuing a voluntary boil advisory effective when service is restored in these areas, until sample(s) collected and analyzed indicate the absence of coliform bacteria.
It is recommended that water be disinfected before consuming it (including fountain drinks), making ice, brushing teeth, or using it for food preparation or rinsing of foods by the following means: Boil water for one (1) full minute in a clean container.
