Louisville Water Lifts Boil Water Advisory, Work Continues After Water Main Break

The Louisville Water Company has lifted the boil water advisory that was in effect after a major water main broke Tuesday morning in the city’s Shelby Park neighborhood.
Louisville Water Company spokeswoman Kelley Dearing Smith said the break highlights a need for further investment in pipe infrastructure.
But water main breaks like this can be unexpected, and repairs may come out of Louisville Water’s untapped $2 million contingency budget.
Mud, Flooded Cars, Bottled Water But for those living near the broken pipe, there’s a lot to fix.
Dirt now cakes the sidewalks, workers slosh through mud to repair the pipe and water jugs sit on the steps of residents’ homes.
Abdalla Qumane has lived in the neighborhood for more than 20 years, but he’d never seen a water break like this.
The water was too high, all their cars got flooded.” Two of those cars belonged to Cynthia Prince.
Prince woke to Strange knocking, warning her to move her cars.
“The water — it was moving fast … it was going down the streets, but the deepest part was in front of my house.” Prince’s water is still off, but she said the water company has offered to help pay for her car.
Louisville Water Company spokeswoman Kelley Dearing Smith expects the pipe will be repaired by Monday.

Boil water advisory remains in effect for Paulding residents

Citizens living in the Union and Yorkville areas of Paulding County are advised to continue boiling all water prior to use.
Paulding County Water System officials say the booster pump on Bell Road began was repaired Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m., but customers should conserve water as pressure continues to be restored.
Those in the area should boil water for at least one minute prior to drinking, cooking, or preparing baby food.
Paulding County Water System can be reached at (770) 445-2761.

LAWCO pledges to address Mansura water quality

The word is “trihalomethanes,” and it made its way into the Mansura vocabulary recently when LAWCO was issued a “notice of violation” because the water it was selling its customers in Mansura had too much of them.
These are called “disinfectant byproducts (DBPs), which include TTHMs.
Edrington noted that some people who drink water with high levels of these byproducts over an extended period of many years may have problems with liver, kidney or central nervous system and may have an increased risk of cancer.
The water is tested quarterly and then rated on a rolling average.
The TTHM rate spiked to 105 in a past test, which put it over 80 for this reporting period.
An official test sample will be taken this month.
“There is a chance that we will be issued another notice of violation” because the average level of the quarterly tests would still be above 80, he said.
Edrington said LAWCO could do that, but noted that Avoyelles Water charges more than Cottonport.
It is also possible, he noted, that Cottonport might be willing to do more on its end to address the problem to avoid losing its largest customer.
The council instructed Edrington to negotiate with another water provider and report back, preferably in December.

University without water after west side main break

A major water main break on Evansville’s west side has left portions of the University without running water.
The break happened in the 4700 block of Upper Mount Vernon Road, and many businesses are also affected.
Bottled water is available at the Community Center, Housing and Residence Life main office, and at all four residence hall desks and the Community Center desk will be staffed 24 hours at this time according to the university.
The university is asking students to stay tuned for a possible boil advisory.
Price said they will send another notification if there is a boil advisory, which would likely last several days.
“I have been here ten years and I have not seen something this big,” Price said.
“The water company is trying to fix it but it could be several hours.” If the situation worsens, Price said housing staff will place flyers on doors and continue to keep the Community Center open 24 hours.
Price said showers for students are fine but would not recommend brushing teeth following the boil advisory.
This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

String of utility boil water advisories issued in ‘abundance of caution’

Orangeburg’s Department of Public Utilities has issued a number of boil water advisories following water main breaks in recent weeks.
"Generally speaking, as cold weather moves in, we see an increase in water main breaks as well as service line leaks," DPU spokesman Randy Etters said.
"In an abundance of caution, DPU made an operational decision several years ago to issue these advisories, even under conditions that would normally not be required,” by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, he said.
The advisories are lifted after the pipe is fixed and the water has been tested.
Notices are often issued through local media outlets when repairs to a pipe are needed that will impact more than 50 customers.
Etters said boil water advisories are issued any time the pressure in a water main drops below 10 pounds per square inch.
DPU has $600,000 allocated in its budget this year to replace approximately two miles of aging pipe, Etters said.
to keep our system operating at the best we possibly can for our customers," he said.
Etters said the utility does take steps to help lessen the need for boil water advisories.
"As long as there is positive pressure inside the pipe, this keeps contamination from entering the water main."

Power outage prompts boil water notice for thousands in Golden Gate

The advisory covers 3,674 customers.
Customers should boil water at a rolling boil for 60 seconds before use.
The circumstances leading up to the power outage were unclear.

Inquiry slams Ministry of Health, local councils for systemic failure on water standards

While Auckland and Wellington residents are drinking safe water, 20 per cent of the country – over 700,000 New Zealanders and countless more tourists – are at risk of drinking potentially unsafe water.
The Government is moving urgently to address the issue and is likely to set up an independent body to oversee safe drinking water, while also considering sanctions for failing to supply safe drinking water.
Universal treatment is one recommendation of a Government inquiry, released yesterday , into the outbreak of water-borne disease in Havelock North last year, which saw a third of the 15,000 residents fall sick and was linked to three deaths.
The inquiry slammed local councils and the Health Ministry – which are usually responsible for safe drinking water – detailing "widespread systemic failure" and inept enforcement that failed to improve, even after the Havelock North crisis.
It has prompted outrage, with Green’s co-leader James Shaw calling it a "disgrace" and "unconscionable" that New Zealanders could fall sick or even die from drinking tap water.
Health Minister David Clark sought to allay public fears, saying that the water people are drinking today is the same as they were drinking yesterday.
Parker said the Ministry of Health, as well as local authorities, had "effectively failed" New Zealanders.
Christchurch is the largest New Zealand city to have unchlorinated water, drawn from aquifers and piped directly to homes.
Punakaiki, for example, sees 500,000 tourists a year and is a permanent "boil water" notice.
"The inquiry considers such a limp response does not go nearly far enough," the report said.
