Atlanta schools return to normal Wednesday after lifted water advisory

Atlanta Public Schools will return to normal operations Wednesday after the city lifted a boil-water advisory that affected about 80 of the district’s sites.
The city had issued the advisory on Monday and lifted it at about 1 p.m. Tuesday.
About 80 APS sites, mostly schools, fell under the advisory area.
That prompted school leaders to dump ice, turn off drinking fountains, bring in hand sanitizer and packaged meals, and distribute water bottles.
“Atlanta Public Schools facilities staff has begun opening up water sources for student and staff use in the impacted locations, and the district will follow normal operations tomorrow, Wednesday, December 5th,” the district said, in a written statement issued Tuesday afternoon.
School principals took precautions Monday afternoon and Tuesday to make sure students did not drink water.

Plumbing lines serving misters, drinking fountains and soda machines should also be flushed for five (5) minutes.
The first binful of ice from icemakers should also be discarded.

Boil water advisory continues, but officials say ‘we think it’s the beginning of the end’

BUCKS COUNTY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Officials say there’s still a boil water advisory in place in parts of Lower Bucks County for Pennsylvania American Water customers, but the company is hoping that won’t be the case for long.
“We think it’s the beginning of the end, certainly," said PA American Water spokesman Terry Maenza.
That’s the hope, Maenza says, now that they have approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to begin collecting water samples for testing "We need to collect two consecutive days of test samples,” he said, which they started doing Sunday.
READ: Hunger issues in New Jersey taken on by legislature Maenza says it takes 24 hours to get the results of each sample, and that they’ll do more testing on Monday.
"As long as those samples come back with no signs of bacteria, we’ll be able to lift the advisory," he said.
That means Tuesday is the best case scenario for this advisory to be lifted.
Over the weekend, KYW Newsradio found out mechanical control issues in the plant led to high turbidity levels, or cloudiness in the water, that’s why the boil water advisory was called in the first place.
In addition, the Pennsbury School District has announced all Pennsbury schools will be open on Monday, December 23.
Dr. William J. Gretzula, the district Superintendent, issued a statement thanking community members for their “patience and understanding.” Gretzula also says PA American Water has provided schools, under the advisory, with a pallet of bottled water.
For all other customers under the advisory, PA American Water says they will continue to have water tankers available; those locations can be found here.

Atlanta residents purchase bottled water, empty shelves at some stores amid boil water advisory

After Atlanta officials issued a boil water advisory for a large area of the city, some grocery stores started selling its cases of bottled water fast.
"Shortly after 10 this morning our staff was working on routine maintenance for flow meters that are tied into the system of the high service pumps for Hemphill," said Kisha Powell during a council meeting.
Powell is the commissioner of the Department of Watershed Management for the City of Atlanta.
"We’re still doing our root cause analysis but in our preliminary discussions our process controls folks have noted that while one of the control or flow meters was in maintenance mode there was one that was not and it’s likely that that meter sent an alarm to the high service pumps to shut them off," she said.
11Alive noticed that many of the shelves were empty at the Kroger on Monroe Drive at Ansley Mall.
It was the same sight at the Publix nearby.
Water in the coolers near the checkout was also gone.
Restaurants and businesses have also taken precautions.
"Our teams started sampling as soon as we had pressure restored to the system.
We dispatched our sampling teams."

Cause of massive water leak in north Jackson still unclear

City of Jackson Public Works Director Robert Miller discusses a boil water advisory that affects 60,000 connections and has led to restaurants closing for the day.
Harold Gater A Thursday morning water main leak that resulted in a massive crater in north Jackson has been repaired and surrounding residents again have access to water.
The cause of the leak is still under investigation, Public Works Director Robert Miller said.
The leak caused a boil water notice for about 60,000 residents and left surrounding residents without water for about four days.
The notice has been lifted for most residents although about a thousand homes in the surrounding area are still under a boil water notice, Miller said on Monday.
Normally, the concrete pipes can last up to 100 years, he said.
“We’re standing here in front of a 90-degree bend of pre-stressed concrete pipe and what you see here are two corrosion holes one slightly bigger than the size of my fist, the other slightly larger,” Miller said in front of the excavation site.
Workers with Hemphill Construction replaced the concrete main with a Ductell iron pipe.
"The concrete thrust block must cure, the new pipe must be flushed and refilled, and the water in the new pipe must be tested as safe before opening the new pipe for flow into the system.
Judy Johnson, who has lived in the neighborhood close to 30 years, said the leak is the worst she’s seen, having lived through several infrastructure crises in Jackson.
