Melbourne to announce boil water update today
The city announced Friday night the break was repaired and water pressure issues were solved, but the boil water notice is still in effect.
The city will announce the results of tests on the water supply Sunday and will say if it is safe to end the boil advisory.
Precautionary Boil Water Notices may be issued because of water system loss of power, loss of water pressure, a water main (pipe) break or other unforeseen emergency.
The notice does not mean that the water is contaminated — it means it is possible for contaminants to enter the pipes and affect drinking water. Until required bacteriological testing is completed, we recommend — as a precaution — boiling tap water before consuming it to kill any potential contaminants, or using bottled water.
How long should water be boiled?
Fill a pot with cold water and start timing when steady streams of bubbles pop from the bottom of the pot. Water must be adequately cooled before it can be used for washing or brushing teeth. Store the boiled water in clean, covered containers.

Boil-water advisory in effect for entire east bank of Plaquemines Parish, areas south of Oakville
PLAQUEMINES PARISH, La.
Plaquemines Parish officials said the boil-water advisory is in effect for all areas that are under a mandatory evacuation ahead of Nate making landfall.
Areas include the Dalcour Water System, Pointe a la Hache Water System, Port Sulphur Water System and south of Oakville only in the Belle Chasse Water System.
Residents will be experiencing lower than normal water pressure in some areas of the parish. Power failures are also expected to cause extremely low water pressure or no water pressure in some areas.
"Because of the low pressure, the water supply is of questionable microbiological quality," parish officials said in an update.
Water alert lifted, but problems persist
Municipal Authority who worked to distribute water and fix the water main break.

Boil order in effect for Melbourne
Restaurants may be feeling the biggest impact, like Squid Lips, which stayed open Friday night. Not being able to use the city’s water is tough on just about everybody.
That’s just one of the costs of keeping a restaurant in business when you have to boil the water before drinking it. Dishes have to be hand-washed and dried now, too. The city’s not only asking people to boil water before drinking or cooking with it; it’s asking people to flush less, bathe less and launder less. You can’t even brush your teeth normally.
"I’ve got a 4-year-old and you have to use bottled water to rinse his mouth because he may accidentally swallow some and you don’t want him to get sick," homeowner Eric Sprauer said.
But it’s one thing to have to change your habits, and quite another to see the small businesses that employ the city’s workers get hit.
‘Boil water’ order lingers in South Haven area
SOUTH HAVEN — City crews have repaired the broken water line that prompted a “boil water” order and gave South Haven students Friday off.
Water customers in and around South Haven are being advised to boil their drinking water for the next two or three days.
“We have to develop a water sample plan and submit it to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. They give us their blessing for the plan and then we take two sets of water samples,” Public works Director Bill Hunter said.
Kevin Dee, the school district’s director of non-instructional services, said the high school and Lincoln Elementary School weren’t affected by the order, but officials had to shut down the three other buildings.
“We could have probably held school at the high school and Lincoln, but any time you have less than 75 percent attendance in the district, the state won’t count it as a school day,” Dee said, referring to the amount of days each year districts are required to hold school.
Friday night’s high school homecoming football game took place at Ratcliffe Field, but some weekend activities at various schools may be canceled if they occur in areas affected by the boil water advisory.
St. Pauls under boil-water advisory
A water line broke at South Elizabeth and East Clark streets early Friday morning, J.R. Steigerwald said.
“When you have an open break you’re required to advise the people to boil their water for 24 hours,” he said.
The samples must sit for 24 hours to determine if bacteria grows. If bacteria is detected, residents will be advised.
The water is safe to use for bathing, washing clothes and doing dishes, he said.
“If you’re making coffee, you should be safe,” Steigerwald said.
He was alerted and the problem was traced to the break. At that time he had to decide whether to have personnel try to fix the break at night or in the daytime.
But, the repair had to wait until a dialysis center at Burlington and McLean streets finished treating patients.
Schools closed due to water main break near South Haven
SOUTH HAVEN, MI — Two school districts have canceled school Friday due to a water main break in the South Haven area.
South Haven Public Schools and Covert Public Schools are canceled Oct. 6 because of a boil water advisory, according to the district websites.
The city of South Haven issued the boil water advisory Thursday due to a water main break near 9235 Blue Star Highway.
However, the boil water advisory could be in effect until Sunday, Oct. 8, according to a news release.
The city is required to perform bacteriological testing over a 72 hour period before rescinding the notice.
