New Orleans boil water advisory: Power was out for 20 minutes
.
The New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board took 20 minutes to switch power from a downed turbine generator to electricity supplied by Entergy, the agency’s emergency manager, Paul Rainwater, said Wednesday (Sept. 20). By that time, water pressure had dropped enough across the east bank to trigger a large-scale boil water advisory that could last for hours or days.
Rainwater said the city’s sewer system was running on Entergy power and wasn’t affected by the outage. New Orleans’ drainage pumps are running on a combination of power supplied by Entergy and that generated by the steam-powered Turbine 1.
Turbine 1 on Wednesday was the only turbine among five in the power plant that was working. It was fixed after an electrical fire knocked it out on Aug. 9.
It usually takes 24 hours to conduct those tests.
Marsha Broussard, the city’s health director, said no one should drink the tap water for the foreseeable future.
Contaminated water could cause vomiting, diarrhea and other health problems
.
NEW ORLEANS — We won’t know if the water in New Orleans was contaminated until Thursday, but the danger it could pose is very real, especially if you’re already sick.
The mother of an 18-month-old boy just learned about the boil water advisory in Orleans Parish hours after it was announced.
Let’s just give him juice for the rest of the day and wait ’til this lifts," Nicole Davis said.
He says for healthy people, those intestinal problems will clear on their own. It’s those with chronic health problems who especially need to boil water for at least a minute, or drink bottled water.
Getting it in your eyes could cause a little irritation.
While most problems will clear up on their own for healthy people, those with healing wounds need to be extra careful.
That’s something Melissa Carollo wants to avoid with her husband’s six inch incision.
"The boil water advisory is going to be a little bit of a pain because my husband just had back surgery, so getting him showered now already is a little bit of a hassle, and I don’t know how I’m going to get him showered boiling water," Carollo said.
Boil-water advisory for east bank of New Orleans expected to last until Thursday afternoon
.
Prompted by another turbine failure at the S&WB’s Carrollton power plant that caused water pressure to drop throughout the system, the boil-water advisory was expected to remain in effect until Thursday afternoon.
The cause of the latest turbine problem was unknown. Only one of the five turbines at the plant was operating most of Wednesday, but the city reported about 7 p.m. that the malfunctioning turbine, No.
The S&WB did not send out a notice about the pressure problems until about a half-hour after the outage, and the initial message in fact said there was no boil-water advisory in place “at this time.” A second message an hour after the pressure dropped announced the advisory.
Those whose immune systems are compromised should not wash their hands, shower or bathe in tap water, the city said.
It was brought online in the past few years and typically is used to power the water and sewer systems. The S&WB decided to produce its own power because of frequent outages in the power from Entergy.
Two water towers being built at the S&WB plant are designed to automatically add water to the pipes to keep the pressure up during a power outage, but those won’t be completed until late 2018, Rainwater said.
Turbine at S&WB back online, boil advisory still in effect
NEW ORLEANS — The turbine that failed at the Sewerage and Water Board this morning and led to a boil advisory for much of Orleans Parish is back online, but the boil advisory remains in effect until further notice.
The boil advisory is still in effect.
Residents on the East Bank of Orleans Parish, including New Orleans East and the Lower Ninth Ward, are advised not to use tap water to drink, make ice, or brush their teeth until further notice, according to city officials.
Any residents who have a compromised immune system are advised not to use tap water to wash their hands or bathe.
Portions of Pender County under boil water advisory
.
ROCKY POINT — Pender County Utilities Water customers in the central and western areas of Pender County are experiencing periods of low pressure or outages due to a water main break along east Montague Road, and the company has issued a boil-water advisory for affected customers.
“Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increases the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system,” said Bryan McCabe, interim public utilities director.
“The Rocky Point/Topsail Water System and the NC Division of Water Resources advise when water is restored, consumers boil all water used for human consumption,” he said.
Drinking water, water used for making ice, washing dishes, and any other food preparation is recommended to be boiled.
If customers do not boil water, the press release encourages them to use bottled water.
Vigorous boiling for one minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.

Artesia could lift boil water alert after E. coli outbreak
.
The Artesia Rural Water Cooperative and all other surrounding systems were unaffected by the outbreak, read a news release from the New Mexico Environment Department.
The outbreak was discovered when routine test samples returned to the city on Wednesday showed the presence of E. coli in one of eight samples submitted for evaluation.
Additional sampling will continue, the release read, and the advisory will be active until E. coli is completely eradicated from Artesia’s city water system.
Anyone bathing in the water is advised to cover large wounds or skin openings.
In July, E. coli was found in several Artesia water samples, causing a nine-day boil water advisory throughout the city and surrounding areas.
City officials deferred to Artesia Mayor Phillip Burch. Burch did not return multiple calls for comment.
Neighbors react to water issues in part of Perry County
.
Some residents in the Sunshine Hill Section of Penn Township say they haven’t been able to shower or drink their tap water, and they say it’s not the first time this has happened.
Penn Township Supervisors bought dozens of cases of water to give out to residents of the Sunshine Hill Community. However, the supervisors are not responsible for the water system; the Penn Township Municipal Authority is. Right now, the Sunshine Hill Community is in a boil water advisory.
"Anything that we have is always, always brown, stained, and ruined," said Lisa Auxt, who lives in Sunshine Hill.
"Frequently, we have brown water.
Auxt says she’s tired of having brown spots all over her and her family’s clothing.
Because of the recent advisory for the community, a concerned group of neighbors created the Sunshine Hill Water Action Group, and Penn Township supervisors, separate from the municipal authority, is giving out water while the advisory is in effect.
"I just could not sit back and not do anything.
