Atlanta water outage linked to systemwide leaks
The agreement, called a consent decree, forced the city’s Watershed Management Department for the better part of two decades to heavily invest in upgrading the city sewers, possibly at the expense of maintaining the water supply system, the audit found.
“Focus on consent decree projects may have resulted in under-investment in drinking water infrastructure,” the city’s audit found.
Infrastructure needs At a Atlanta City Council utilities committee meeting last week, the city’s watershed commissioner, Kishia Powell, described the struggles her agency has had trying to get a handle on the water loss problem.
“We have been trying to improve our accounting for water loss,” Powell said.
An under-investment Today, the Watershed Management Department is in charge of both the city’s sewer system and the drinking water system.
Since 2003, the city has spent nearly $ 2 billion to comply with terms of a consent decree which required repair to its sewer system and that may have have led to neglect of the drinking water system, the city audit last found.
“Focus on consent decree projects may have resulted in under-investment in drinking water infrastructure,” the city’s audit found.
‘Salaries a bit all over the place’ At the council committee meeting last week, Powell not only faced questions about the outage from elected leaders who oversee her department, but also criticism from current and former city employees.
Powell declined to address allegations of patronage within her department, but she said she was meeting with employees to hear them out, including some of the employees at committee.
“We are trying to work through them to get to a better place.
Boil Water Advisory near Bank Street
KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A water main break on Egleston Avenue Sunday resulted in a temporary loss of pressure, and that has triggered a precautionary boil water advisory for homeowners in the immediate area for the next few days, until test results are back.
Homeowners between Reed Court and Bank Street on Egleston, Clinton and Terrace Court are advised to either boil their drinking water, or use bottled water until the advisory is lifted.
Boil water advisory for part of Kalamazoo
The advisory is in effect in the areas of Egleston Avenue, Clinton Avenue and Terrace Court between Reed Court and Bank Street, and around the intersection of E. Stockbridge Avenue and Reed Court.
People within that area should boil their tap water for at least two minutes before consuming it.
You can still bathe in the water.
The water main break, which happened on Egleston Avenue, has been fixed.
Such breaks cause a drop in water pressure that can allow bacteria to enter the system, but county health officials say no bacteria had been found as of Sunday.
The results of testing to confirm the water’s safety should be back by Wednesday.
Boil water advisory after creek washes away bridge and water pipes
MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) — A rising creek washed away a bridge and 200 feet of water pipes, leaving 500 customers without water.
Police tell WSAZ heavy debris underneath a bridge in the Lenore area blocked water from passing underneath, causing the water to rush up and around the bridge.
The bridge washed away Sunday night.
Rushing waters also carried away water pipes.
Police said that a boil water advisory is in effect Sunday night for the area of East Kermit all the way to western Lenore and the town of Nagatuck.
Police also said that classes for Tug Valley High School, Lenore K-8, and the Kermit Area School have been cancelled Monday due to no water.
There will be water distribution centers at the Kermit Fire Department, the Lenore Fire Department, and the Williamson Fire Department Monday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Police said that customers can expect to be without water at least through Monday.
Officials said getting to the other side of the creek to repair the pipes is difficult because the bridge has been destroyed.
