Boil water advisory for neighborhoods affected by pipe break

originally posted on November 19, 2016

A break in a water pipe is affecting people in the areas of Canongate, Palmetto-Tyrone Road and Persimmon Creek Road, local water system officials announced late Thursday.

Residents and commercial water customers should boil their water before using until later this afternoon, the Coweta County Water and Sewer Authority advices. The advisory is pending testing results, meaning it could be extended beyond the 4 p.m. period which would conclude the initial 24-hour period.

Boiling is generally effective in killing germs that may have entered the pipe during the break and subsequent repairs.

The agency also posted a notice that some water customers may notice red, rusty coloring in what comes out of the tap due to increased levels of manganese, a mineral found in lakes and streams as well as food and vitamins.

Normally, it is filtered out by water-treatment plants, but the current drought that has lowered the levels of reservoirs resulted in a higher concentration of manganese, the authority notes. Stepped up filtration has corrected the issue, but it may still show up until the entire system has been fully flushed.

“Please note that while manganese may cause water to temporarily look discolored, the mineral is not harmful and causes no health issues,” notes the authority website.
